The day turn began with an attack on Kuantan airfields by 13 Ki-32s, 2 Ki-15 recon planes, and 17 Ki-43 fighters. 8 Buffalos on CAP. 5 Buffalos shot down and 1 Vildebeest destroyed on the ground. 8 casualties and 1 vehicle lost. 16 other hits. 1 Ki-43 lost, 1 Ki-32 damaged.

23 Nells out of Truk bombarded airfields at Rabaul - without effect. 1 was damaged.

5 ROCAF SB-2s failed to harm the IJA 13th (Square) Division in China.

16 P-26s escorted by 3 P-40s caused 12 casualties to the 16th Division on Luzon.

A JAAF attack on the ROCA 25th Field Army caused 91 casualties and 2 guns lost.

18 Ki-21s caused 16 casualties to the Jitra Brigade in Malaya.

3 B-17s out of India failed to harm a demi brigade of the 55th Division (Brigade) in Burma.

2 Dutch T-IVa were destroyed trying to close the CVE force one hex SW of Jolo.. 18 Claudes, 11 Petes and 4 Zeros on CAP overwhelmed them.

3 Beauforts missed CL Kiso inbound with a TF bearing invasion troops headed for Rabaul. This is just an SNLF - a preliminary landing to stop supply generation and suck up supplies and cause exhaustion among the foe.

3 B-17s from Midway missed DD Yayoi at Wake.

2 B-10s missed BB Yamashiro in the same hex as the CVE force - near Jolo. Both were lost - one to the CAP - one to AAA.
Later 3 Hudsons missed BB Ise in the same force - 2 of them damaged by CAP.

9 Nells and 22 Zeros went downtown to Manila - met 10 P-40s on CAP - shot down 3 of them - torpedoed PG Napa and missed DD Pillsbury.
These raiders came out of Cagayan. Then 43 more Zeros swept in from Formosa - shooting down 2 of the 5 P-40s still on CAP.

3 Beauforts missed CL Kashima - this right at Rabaul with a landing TF - 2 being damaged by AA fire.

2 Vincent torpedoed AK Kikukawa Maru in the Gulf of Thailand.

3 Hudsons missed DM Hoko in the South China Sea.

Ground assault failed at Wuchang/ Wuhan. This was not really an attack - but cover for a major evacuation operation. He is on my LOC - and the LOC battle is not going well. I refuse to have a major pocket - so we are fighting out way out by the best LOC available - to join the inbound troops from Shanghai - and we will return properly supplied. 1268 casualties, 44 guns lost, 5 vehicles lost. 47 Chinese casualties and 2 guns lost. For reasons unclear even cutting the LOC to Wuchang does not prevent units there being fully supplied.

A ground assault on the LOC from Shanghai by 45 000 troops (vs 26 000 Chinese) failed to achieve odds - again. 429 casualties and 18 guns lost to 300 Chinese casualties and 22 guns lost. We are rotating fresh troops at the point and will strike again in about two days.

73 000 Japanese (with better weapons) attacked 52 000 Chinese at Chengchow - and failed to achieve odds (which is hard to believe). 2098 casualties and 98 guns lost to 300 Chinese casualties, 25 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost.

Japanese bombardment at Nanchang caused 23 casualties and 2 guns lost. This position will assault tomorrow.

36 000 Japanese attacked 14 000 British and Chinese at HK - failed to achieve odds (again) - HK remains fort level 5 - a very unsual situation. 322 casualties, 13 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. 57 Allied casualties and 3 guns lost. More troops are arriving by ship at Canton - as are more supplies. We are trying a rotating assault force (demoralized troops go to Canton to defend it - troops with good morale go to HK - and we will try to attack every day with fresh troops. He must run out of supplies sooner or later.

6400 Japanese in an unsupported brigade captured Davao from 3100 Filipinos in a "division." 121 casualties and 5 guns lost compared to 30 Allied casualties and 2 guns lost - the division retreating (as usual). Now it will starve and we can reduce it later.

5800 Japanese in a supported reserve regiment attacked the remnant of a Chinese Guerilla Regiment in South China - achieved 30:1 odds - ant it retreated - suffering 88 casualties and 2 guns lost - reducing it to 170 men and 2 guns.

Allied bombardment attacks at Wuhan, Rabaul, Manila, Nanchang and Chengchow were ineffective.

Airborne assault at Magwe failed - an undetected brigade either was there or moved in. The airborne will march South to friendly lines. We are flying in and marching in troops to secure Central Burma: the main rail LOC has all been captured - and a demi brigade has shut down supply production at Rangoon - so only Magwe on the main Rail line is not controlled. We will go after it when the regulars are strong enough.

RE: RHSMRAO vs POLYNIK: Test 11B: Carriers vs Carriers at last

Post by el cid again »

Yesterday Poly wrote he was hoping for a strike on my carriers - I replied it was not a good idea so early in the war - and weather prevented it from happening. Today was different - the weather cleared - and he had come up with a clever idea: combine carrier and land based air...

21 Dec 1941 (Hawaii) 22 Dec (Tokyo/Manila)

The night turn began with discovery of a mine field at Manila - and in spite of no hits - a report of troops lost - 55 casualties - 5 guns - 1 vehicle - to mines?????

A large MSW TF detected and completely cleared the sub laid mines at Takao Formosa.

Swordfish missed CA Nachi - and was missed in turn by 2 CA with DC plus 8 DDs. This in the Celebes Sea.

6 IJN DD managed to get 3 hits on USN sub SS Perch at Saigon.

3 AS units manged to get one hit on USN sub SS Triton at Kwajalein.

We are getting a handle on Poly's aggressive use of subs - combining air ASW, ship ASW and giving many units experience. Also we evade his subs when we detect them to reduce their scores.

The day turn began with 17 Nells out of Truk attacking Rabaul causing 3 hits - this demoralized the attackers - presumably due to AA. None were lost.

A JAAF attack on the ROC 20th Field Army caused 96 casualties and 4 guns lost.

34 Ki-48s caused 22 casualties to the Jitra Brigade in Malaya.

3 Ki-36 and 7 Ki-27 (on bombing missions) failed to harm the Philippine 51st division - but lost a Ki-36 to HMG fire.

7 Ki-30s caused 24 casualties to the ISF No 4 Forward Air Station in Malaya.

15 P-35s missed CA Myoko and DD Umikaze in Philippine waters. 4 Petes opposed them - scoring 1 Hawk kill. In this case the P-35s were acting like fighter bombers - that is like dive bombers - and were not dogfighting.
2 more missed AO Shiretoko in the same area.

4 A-20 Bostons and 5 F2A-3 buffalos (which turned out to be carrier planes) tried a small strike on KB SW of Oahu. All the Buffalos were lost to 54 Zeros and 24 Petes on CAP - and 2 of the Bostons were also shot down without penetrating. This turned out to be the opening round in a series of air strikes. For a long time it appeared to be an exchange between Oahu and the KB - but in the end it turned out the USN carriers were also at Oahu.

2 Hudsons missed BB Hyuga in the Celebes Sea.

10 Nells torpedoed and sank DD Pillsbury and PG Mindinao at Manila. Escorted by 22 Zeros they met 5 P-40s - which more or less just ran away. These planes came from Cagayan, Mindinao.

30 Zeros led 50 carrier bombers (half torpedo planes) right downtown into PH - and met a gigantic fighter force on CAP: 3 F2A-3s, 6 F4F-3s,
12 P-36A and 77 P-40Bs. 8 Zeros, 8 Vals and 9 Kates were lost - most to fighters but some bombers to AA fire. No less than 33 P-40s, 6 P-36s and 1 Buffalo were shot down (not too bad for 30 Zeros = 5:1 kill ratio). The Kates missed DD Crosby and CV Saratoga in a heartbreaking series of runs. But the Vals lived up to their reputation (they sank more ships than any other plane in history) - and put three 250 kg bombs into her. At this moment we equal the historical score for the initial force sent to PH (in spite of a failure to have the forward bases for recon get captured - see the game vs Scot to see this plan working). 3 BB are sunk (two BB still sit on the bottom of PH, a third spent the entire war under repair and sank under tow after the war ended - en route to the USA). And Saratoga is damaged (she historically was damaged by a submarine).

43 Zeros swept Manila - met 5 P-40s - and shot 2 down before the rest bugged out.

45 B-17s bombed Johnston Island - causing 24 hits.

S-18 missed CA Atago. In turn she was missed by DD Kasumi. This was part of the KB force - which had split into two and was now recombining but still two TFs in the same hex. This was WSW of Oahu - and it seems clear he deliberately sent the sub there - calculating correctly where the two forces might rejoin. They had split to kill battleships - the zero system damage ships sprinting ahead to catch them - about three days ago. Atago and 2 DD then detected and reengaged the S-18 - without success. S-18 then detected, attacked and missed CV Zuikaku - and 5 DD in turn counterattacked - and also missed. This turned into a sub/ASW odessy: S-18 was detected by BB Hiei - 5 DD with her engaged - and had no more luck than any other ships in this long but fruitless series of engagements.

Recon seemed to reveal Xuwen South China (by Hainan) was abandoned - so a small force landed there - and confirmed it had been evacuated. It will be captured tomorrow.

We are having loads of trouble in China - mostly because Poly is fighting for the LOCs - but also because of bad routing of units ordered to march. The AI is truly stupid and sometimes sends them 180 degrees from their assignment.

An attack by 52 000 troops at Nanchang - vs 27 000 - failed to achieve odds again - 1075 casualties and 35 guns lost compared to 363 Chinese casualties and 32 guns lost. We have had enough of this in this sector - and will return after we cut the LOC to Nanchang.

Ground assault failed at HK again - the worst showing of all time - the fort level remains at 5 - and the lost ratio is not favorable - 106 Japanese and 4 guns to 47 Allies and 1 gun. We will continue to rotate troops and reengage here - the outcome is never in doubt - but this is very unusual - and we are not happy about it. Still - HK may fall by Christmas Day - history's mark. They cannot be in good shape.

Ground assault at Lemon Bay next to Manila also failed - 360 casualties and 7 guns lost compared to 80 casualties, 4 guns and 11 vehicles. We will send in a tank regiment and an artillery regiment and try again. At least it no longer produces anything. Mostly we are starving them out at this point - and will continue to chip away at secondary hexes rather than attack at Manila - which we have invested with a division to shut it down - and goad him into using supplies by bombarding or counterattacking. He is doing the former but not the latter.

Undefended San Fernando fell to a pure tank assault - the tanks could get there faster. This is a mistake - he is giving up supply producing hexes without a fight. Fine - we will take them. Looks like Linguyan is not well defended either. On Luzon - every hex we capture feeds us - and reduces the supplies to a hundred thousand men - which eat a lot.

A 40 000 man combined arms force in Central Malaya forced a tiny support unit to retreat (no surprise there) - and we are splitting the penninsula into parts. 7 Units are pocketed at Kuantan with no good retreat - just a trail (or worse - by sea from a level 1 port exposed to air attack). 131 Allied casualties, 3 guns lost and 1 vehicle lost (out of a unit with only 367 men, 5 guns and 1 vehicle to begin with).

Taiping Malay was defended only by the static supply sink - and 22 000 troops had no problems capturing it without any casualties. 6447 Allied casualties and 691 vehicles lost. This is a mistake - we get the hex to feed us - base planes on forward - and he loses the hex - and does not delay us even a day.

Japanese bombardment at Wuchang caused 2 casualties.
Allied bombardment at Chengchow and Nanchang was ineffective.

The Allies - falsely encouraged by our problems at Wuchang - tried a deliberate attack by 23 000 troops vs 79 000 - and paid the price. 37 Japanese casualties, 1 gun lost, 1 vehicle lost vs 1879 Chinese casualties and 94 guns lost. I don't think he understands we are leaving the area - he is not occuping undefended hexes. We are going to concentrate on the coast- clear the LOC and return properly supplied. I am not leaving over a hundred thousand men isolated from supplies.

An Allied attack at Magwe Burma achieved 31 to 1 odds vs an airborne company - but caused only 6 casualties. The company retreated.

Allied bombardment at Rabaul was ineffective.

Allied bombardment at Manila caused 3 casualties and 1 gun lost. 47 000 troops participated in the attack.

Airborne assault at Prome failed - an undetected brigade caused 13 casualties and 3 guns lost to the assault company.

22 Dec 1941 (Hawaii) 23 Dec (Tokyo/Manila)

KB continues to refuel and is moving to cover transports which removed an SNLF from Johnston - which now is proceeding on a new mission. The South Seas Detachment and a couple of tank companies are loading or moving to back up this force. Several tankers and supply ships and escorts are also moving into the Central Pacific theater. KB is in company with a strong fast SAG based on all four Kongos - as well as a replenishment TF in good standing. It does not appear the enemy carriers are following - and we do have some eyes out on subs and seaplane carriers.

The problems in China are being addressed by consolidation and upgrading aircraft to more effective types of bombers. Also - we are ahead of plan re cutting the Burma Road - which gets rid of 500 supply points a day at Kunming. Burma should not be invaded yet - but it is badly cut up - and troops are flying in daily to make it worse for them.

Malaya is splitting open - and 7 units are pocketed at Kuantan.

Luzon is not bad - Manila is invested already and not generating supplies - and so has much of the North to a weak force. Now we are sending in a fresh division from China to help flank a strong position in the mountains - and stop supply generation at Clark - and isolate Manila from the North.

The night turn began with a large MSW TF clearing the remaining mines at Bako - it cleared Takao yeserday.

7 DD got 2 hits on USN SS Tambor at Wake - at last. She has been a problem.

Ancient (and ex RN) RTN DD Rayong was torpedoed and sunk at Bangkok by RN sub Trusty. Most of the RTN counterattacked - without effect - but a Japanese DE managed to detect and engage the submarine - and scored one hit. This was actually "light destroyer" Shumushu.

Landings at Rabaul were opposed by 71 CD shots - which scored 3 hits on 2 ships and missed another. 92 casualties to beach defenses.

A single MSW unit cleared mines at Cam Rahn Bay.

Ro-61 missed a DMS at Singapore.

The day turn began with a JAAF raid on Puching - 1 resource hit.

27 Ki-21s caused 4 port related hits at Bassein Burma - but missed 2 ships in port.

46 Zeros swept Manila - met 3 P-40s on CAP - and shot 1 down. The rest bugged out.

16 P-26s failed to harm a RCT of the 16th Division at Lemon Bay beside Manila.

30 Ki-48s caused 39 casualties and 1 gun lost to the Jitra Brigade in Malaya.

18 Bettys out of Truk caused 5 casualties and 2 guns lost to Lark Force Battalion at Rabaul.

3 B-17s out of India caused 15 casualties and 1 gun lost to a demi brigade of 55th Division in Burma.

3 Hudsons missed an AP at Kavieng - these out of Rabaul - which is still flying in spite of being invaded.
They repeated this later in the day.

11 P-35s out of Cebu missed 2 CA at Dipilog Mindinao - 3 were lost to Petes and AAA.
2 more missed an AO in the same hex.
Later 6 missed AK Yuri Maru at Naga - but 1 was lost to 12 Ki-27s on CAP.

3 B-17s out of Oahu attacked KB far to the West - 1 was destroyed by CAP - another damaged - and then they bugged out.

3 ROCAF B-10s put 3 bombs into Yagi Maru at Canton - unusual.

12 DD detected, engaged and hit USN sub SS Perch at Saigon.

Japanese bombardment at HK was ineffective. This game features the worst Japanese performance at HK I have ever seen - it remains at Level 5 fortifications.

Allied bombardment at Chengchow caused 2 casualties.
Allied bombardment at Nanchang was ineffective.

Allied ground assault against an airborne company at Prome caused it to retreat and consolodate with anohter airborne element in the nex North of that location.

Allied bombardment at Rabaul was ineffective.

Allied bombardment at Manila caused 11 casualties.

Undefended Udan Thani Thailand was captured - increasing supply generation for the Axis and opening the rail LOC Northward.

Undefended Xuwin China was captured by a tank company which landed yesterday.

The day turn began with a tiny raid on KL - 4 Ki-30s escorted by 2 Ki-43s - accompanied by 2 Ki-15 recon planes. 10 Buffalos on CAP.
1 Buffalo and 1 Ki-30 lost. No damage to target. This was immediately followed by a sweep (reverse order of plan) - 9 Claudes and 10 Ki-43s came in vs the remaining 9 Buffalos - and shot 5 down - without Japanese losses.

31 Ki-21s caused 2 port related hits at Bassein Burma - but missed ships in port.

3 ROCAF SB-2s failed to harm the IJA 6th (Pack) Division in China.
6 more missed an AK unloading supplies at Canton.
But immediately thereafter, 3 more put a bomb into AK Suwa Maru at the same location.
5 SB-2s and 3 B-10s missed two transports at Swatow.

14 Philippine AF P-26s - escorted by 3 USAAF P-40s - failed to harm the IJA 16th (Draft) Division at Manila. 1 P-26 shot down by AAMG fire.

A JNAF strike on the ROC 94th Field Army was ineffective.

48 Zeros swept Manila - met 2 P-40s on CAP - and shot 1 down - the other bugged out.

3 A-20s out of PH missed BB Haruna - retiring from the area to repair damage.

5 P-35 Hawks missed an AK East of Luzon.

USN sub Sculpin torpedoed AK Unyo Maru in the South China Sea.

Ground assault by 90,000 Japanese at Wuchang, Wuhan (a withdrawal action) achieved an unexpected 2:1 odds vs 21 000 Chinese - in spite of no supplies - 1565 Japanese casualties, 49 guns lost vs 285 Chinese casualties and 29 guns lost. This position might fall if we had supplies - which we do not. So we will continue to withdraw down the road to join forces in the Lower Yangtze basin to help they with a stalled LOC fight. About 4 units already have extracted themselves - 2 of these air support units which are useless without supplies but useful if they get to supply rich air bases.

Japanese bombardment at HK caused 4 casualties to both sides - also 1 Japanese gun lost.

Allied bombardment at Chengchow was ineffective.

13 000 Chinese attacked at Hankow - and failed to achieve odds vs the supply sink - which is large. They caused 2 casualties to the sink.

Allied bombardment at Rabaul caused 7 casualties - to the Allies!!! Unusual.

Allied bombardment at Manila caused 3 Japanese casualties and 1 gun lost vs 2 Filipino casualties and 1 gun lost.

Airborne assault captured undefended Schwebo Burma.

Christmas Eve 1941 (Hawaii) Christmas Day (Tokyo/Manila)

The night turn began with DD Asagumo hitting a mine at Luoag. It is part of a TF landing a RCT of a division - to wipe out a Filippine Army battalion isolated there. We knew there were mines and took our chances.

IJN Naval bombardment at Nanchang was ineffective.

An ASW TF of 5 units missed I-159 at PM.

Landings at Rabaul were opposed by 14 CD shots - 2 hits on AK Tainan Maru - 19 casualties. Good shooting for night time.

An ASW TF of 12 DD attacked USN sub Perch at Saigon - 2 hits - on fire - heavy damage.

The day turn began with 47 Zeros sweeping Manila - 1 P-40 on CAP - it bugged out (as would I at 47:1).

3 ROCAF SB-2s failed to harm the 6th (Pack) Division.
6 ROCAF IL-4C failed to harm the 41st (Pack) Division.

15 P-26 failed to harm the 16th Division at Manila.

16 Nells out of Truk failed to harm the Rabaul Base unit.

2 ROCAF SB-2s missed a junk group at Wuchang.
Later 3 repeated that.
3 more missed DD IMN Hai Wei at Swatow.
3 more missed an AK at Canton.
Later 2 repeated that.
3 more missed an AK in the South China Sea near Hainan Island.

16 Ki-21s put three 50 kg bombs into TK CW River Tanker No 5 at Hinzada Burma.

4 Hudsons missed an AK at Davao.

IJA landings at Maasin Leyte caused 13 casualties.

Japanese ground bombardment at Rabaul was ineffective. 3100 Japanese ashore - facing 2100 Allies.

88 000 Japanese troops attacked (without supplies) at Wuchang Wuhan - 20 000 Chinese defenders - 1:1 odds -
722 Japanese casualties and 17 guns lost - 230 Chinese casualties and 6 guns lost.

55 000 Japanese attacked 14 000 Chinese at HK - Fort Level 5 -- FINALLY reduced to 4 (first reduction in this game) -
703 Japanese casualties, 18 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost - 152 Allied casualties - 2 guns lost - 1 vehicle lost.

16 000 Japanese attacked 6400 Filipinos at Maubon Bay. Because this failed before - we brought up a tank regiment and an artillery regiment to support the division. 6:1 odds- the enemy withdrew. 172 Japanese casualties and 8 guns lost. 180 Filipino casualties, 4 guns lost, 4 vehicles lost. Retreat was to Clark because the road to Manila is not open.

Undefended Vientianne Laos fell to automatic ground assault.

Allied shock attack at Hankow caused 24 Japanese casualties and 2 vehicles lost. This position is without supply and only the static supply sink remains.

Allied bombardment at Nanchang was ineffective.

Allied bombardment at Rabaul was ineffective.

Allied bombardment at Manila was ineffective.

Airborne assault at Myitkyina discovered an undetected small Forward Air Station. It failed but no casualties to either side. We will try with a larger force tomorrow - and another airborne party is almost there via the rail line. We will fly in infantry to Schwebo tomorrow as well. Being on his LOC might make him stop defending Mandalay. If not - he may lost his units.

His campaign in China is more or less normal - although no one else ever did it right before. He jumped on the LOC - and I must react to that or die. We will come back - when we have the LOC feeding us. HK is just bad rolls. It usually falls before Christmas (the historical fall).

16 Nells out of Truk failed to harm Rabaul - but 1 was shot down.

3 B-17s and 2 A-20s missed CL Katori and AV Kiyokawa Maru in the Central Pacific. 56 Zeros and 19 Petes were on CAP - this must be KB hex - but they only shot down 1 A-20 - and damaged 2 B-17s. Defensive fire from the bombers damaged 4 Zeros.

11 Blenheims put 3 bombs into AK Havana Maru in the Gulf of Thailand. They missed to other AKs entirely.

2 Hudsons missed BB Nagato at Rabaul. 5 Petes on CAP failed to stop them.

3 SBD-3s put a bomb into Astuga Maru off the Philippines. Where did they get SBDs from ???

6300 Japanese troops attacked 4000 Filipinos at Linguyan - achieved 3:1 odds - and they retreated. 94 Japanese casualties, 3 guns lost. 48 Filipino casualties and 5 guns lost.

Japanese ground bombardment at Kuantan, Malaya was ineffective. We have decided to withdraw and bypass this pocket with 6 units in it.

Allied bombardment at Nanchang and Rabaul was ineffective.

Allied bombardment at Manila caused 13 casualties and 1 gun lost to IJA 16th Division.

Japanese bombardment at Meikeitila Burma caused 8 casualties.

Undefended Maasin Leyte was captured.

26 Dec 1941 (Hawaii) 27 Dec (Far East)

The night turn began with landings at Rabaul. 15 CD shots fired - 1 hit each on 2 different DMS. CL Kashima engaged but missed. 68 casualties to beach defenses.

Mines detected at Aparri - and partly cleared by four escorts (which is almost nonsense - even my APA could "clear" mines with paravanes and rifles - so why just escorts? And how does that happen fast? Try mineclearing fast - you hit mines.

A IJN APD attacked and Missed Dutch sub KCVI. This was repeated twice more during the night - that APD is consistent if inaccurate. And it appears to be part of an AS TF of many units out of Bako - but the others don't even try.

USS Spearfish attacked and missed TK Ichiyu - but got hit by a shell fired in reply! [I wonder if it was an ASW shell???]

Mines were detected at Taan - by a SC unit - and troop casualties reported. What is that about? No landings. No troop cargo. But 20 casualties and 2 guns lost - to a mine???

An ASW unit attacked and missed Ro-61 at Singapore.

Not a good night for sub hunters on either side.

The day turn began with 14 I-16s attacked Houtou Manchuria - are we at war with Russia??

18 Ki-21s escorted by 26 Zeros attacked Mandalay. 42 fresh P-40Bs of AVG engaged. 3 were shot down - but they got 4 Zeros and 3 Ki-21s were damaged by flak. 2 hits on the target.

26 Ki-32s escorted by 18 Ki-43s attacked Malacca. 1 Hudson destroyed on the ground. 3 casualties. 28 other hits. No CAP. 1 Ki-30 lost to AAA.

48 Zeros swept Manila - but no CAP to engage.

3 ROCAF SB-2s failed to harm 6th Division in China.

14 Philippine Air Force P-26s failed to harm 16th Division at Manila. 2 destroyed and 1 damaged - this will get worse as we move in AAA.

3 B-17s out of India inflicted 7 casualties on 33rd Division in Burma. 33rd Division is spread out in fragements - as we must fly it in - there being no good SLOC yet.

3 B-17s out of Midway missed DD Asanagi South of that island. It is in a collection of many TFs which seems to confuse targeting. Each TF has a different function - transport - replenishment - surface - carrier. 55 Zeros and 28 Petes did shoot one down and damaged another.

9 P-35s out of Cebu missed CA Suzuya at Cagayan - 1 shot down by the cruiser.
2 more missed an AK nearby.

3 B-17s put a bomb into raider Akagi Maru in the transport TF South of Mideay. 55 Zeros and 28 Petes failed to prevent penetration. 1 bomber damaged.
3 more missed BB Kirishima in the SAG later. 1 destroyed and 1 damaged by CAP.

3 ROCAF SB-2s missed an AP in the South China Sea.
5 more and 2 B-10s put a bomb into an AP at Swatow - and missed two more. 3 casualties and 1 vehicle lost to troop cargo.
Later 1 SB-2 missed an AK at Canton. 7 Ki-27s on CAP failed to harm it - and it still penetrated.
Next 3 more put a bomb into AP Josho Maru at the same location - and the CAP will still useless.

9 Ki-43s swept Malacca - no CAP to fight.

2 Vildebeeste missed an AK at Kota Bahru. 2 Petes on CAP were ineffective.
11 Blenheims put a bomb in one AK and missed another at the same place. Petes still ineffective.

6000 IJA and IJN troops at Rabaul attacked 2000 Allies - failed to achieve odds vs Level 2 fortifications - 30 Japanese casualties and 2 guns lost - 16 Allied casualties and 1 gun lost.

Japanese ground bombardment at KL caused 4 Allied casualties.

Allied bombardment at Nanchang, Rabaul and Manila was ineffective.

Japanese ground bombardment at Meiktila Burma caused 1 Allied casualty and 1 gun lost.

Japanese airborne assault at Myitkyina Burma captured the city and drove out the air support unit there. 785 paras were a de facto battalion force - vs 428 survivors of a Forward Air Station. 1 Allied casualties.

27 Dec 1941 (Hawaii) 28 Dec (Far East)

Poly has inflicted major reverses on the IJA in China - by jumping on the LOC (as Allied players should do but don't).
I have extracted more than a hundred thousand troops - which will give me some punch. But other ops went badly as well -
HK is terrible and in my haste to reinforce it I wreaked Canton (lack of garrison) - making a supply nightmare. And the offensive
West from Shanghai has only barely happened - again mainly because of good generalship by Poly - fighting strong forward.

He is in trouble in Malaya and Burma and the Philippines - and Rabaul might fall soon - we have a suprise set for tomorrow. He also has shut down shipping in the South China Sea with submarines - but I got a handle on that with air ASW today. One more day and they should be open again.

It is at Midway the naval war might come to a real fight. He has strong PBY and B-17D forces there - and we plan to wipe both out - and secure a forward base (which - Johnston Island shows - he will waste many bombs upon). We have a strong ad hoc (unplanned) force assembled - with the South Seas Regiment - an SNLF - tankers - KB - and a strong SAG. It is just out of range for a landing tomorrow - and it has been fighting a squadron of submarines for a week. We gave them a heavy dose of air ASW today (all Kates set to this) - but will evade them tomorrow - and see how many are not running (damaged) for port? This is the last day of the preliminary approach to Midway - tomorrow the battle begins for real. The only question is - what do we face? A Marine Defense Battalion and ground support, B-17s and PBYs and subs we know for sure. Possibly the long sought carriers. If they don't come out to play - the initial ops will have failed in their primary mission - and we must retire to repair and replace depleted air groups.

The night turn began with continuing landings at Rabaul. No CD shots. 39 casualties to beach defenses.
Later a bombardment attack by a SAG led by BB Nagato and BB Mutsu caused 4 CD shots to be fired - no hits - and there were 78 Allied casualties, 1 gun lost, 1 vehicle lost and 11 other hits.

9 DDs and APDs engaged Dutch sub KXVI SW of Formosa. They scored 2 hits.
8 other DDs and APDs engaged USS Tarpon one hex farther SW - but failed to hit her.

USS Trusty torpedoed and sank AK Unyo Maru at Davao.
Later she torpedoed AK Zenyo Maru and missed an AO at the same location.

3 TFs in a row - two ASW and 1 MSW - encountered and cleared mines at Bako the Pescadores. APD Patrol Boat No 2 hit two mines in the last of these.

Ro-61 torpedoed both ships in DMS Bendigo & Goulburn at Singapore - sinking the DMS unit outright.

The day turn began with a sweep of Manila by 47 Zeros - no CAP to oppose them.

3 ROCF SB-2s failed to harm the Ankei SNLF in Central China.

9 P-26s failed to harm the 16th Division at Manila.

A JAAF attack caused 58 casualties and 1 gun lost to the 74th Field Army.
Another caused 10 casualties to the 70th Field Army.

15 Ki-30s caused 55 casualties and 1 gun lost to the Indian Army 6th Brigade in Malaya.

29 Ki-21s and Ki-48s caused 18 casualties to the Indian Army Burma Frontier Brigade in Burma.
4 B-17s out of India failed to harm an element of the 33rd Division in Burma.

7 P-35s out of Cebu missed CA Mayo in the Visayas - 1 was shot down and 2 damaged in the effort. 6 Claudes and 3 Petes were on CAP - this being a CVE force.
Later in the day 3 more missed an AO at Davao.

3 B-17s out of Midway missed CL Katori. 61 Zeros and 27 Petes on CAP destroyed 2 of them.
3 more tried to hit one of the four TFs in the hex - but gave up before anyone got hurt.
3 more repeated that process - but damaged 3 Zeros before they gave up.

3 Hudsons missed an AK at Davao.

22000 Japanese got 1:1 odds for the first time on the 52000 defenders of KL (there is a large supply sink there). 226 Japanese casualties and 4 guns lost. 284 Allied casualties and 15 guns lost. The ratio indicates KL will fall soon. We will help by adding major air strikes to the mix tomorrow.

Allied bombardment at Nanchang was ineffective. It revealed less than 15 000 Chinese are facing 54 000 Japanese - because our extraction permitted concentration. Now we need a rail LOC to feed them. Working on it.

A surprise Allied shock attack on Schwebo Burma by 1686 troops failed miserably - we flew in many regular infantry during the day in a major airlift - and had 3085 defenders. 70 Allied casualties and 3 guns lost. He has no line of retreat from Mandalay (other than by river) and he has no supply sources feeding the position.

Allied bombardment at Rabaul and Manila was ineffective.

A demi brigade of the 55th Division Brigade took Meiktila by ground assualt. 5301 troops faced 1623 and got 51:1 odds - they must have been in bad shape. They retreated toward Mandalay. 109 Japanese casualties vs 37 Allied casualties and 3 guns lost. This is a major logistical position/resource center - and we hold the main RR LOC in some force. Rangoon has been by passed - and we have sought to cut the Burma Road (successfully). Now we will reduce Mandalay - and then turn to reduce his positions in Western Burma. All before we got a sea LOC to bring in major force. There is one two brigade division (mostly), one independent mixed regiment (mostly), one airborne brigade, fragments of 33rd Division and a naval landing party in Burma. But they have very strong air support out of Thailand - and a few tiny airheads actually in country.

28 Dec 1941 (Hawaii) 29 Dec (Far East)

The night turn began with mine clearing at Laoag Luzon.

Night bombardment at Rabaul - 2 CD shots fired - no hits. 37 Allied casualties and 1 gun lost to counterbattery fire, 14 other hits.

Remnants of the Philippine Army division which retreated from Davao to Gen Santos fired upon troops landing there - but they have no real firepower - no hits on ships. This is an emergency landing by part of a support unit from a ship in danger of sinking after being torpedoed. I sent the ship here to avoid being torpedoed again - be unpreditable - and get ashore at the closest possible alternate point to Davao. 28 casualties to beach defenses. Pre dawn landings lost 30 more.

Landings continue at Rabaul. 8 CD shots missed DD Sagi. 7 casualties to beach defenses.

Dutch sub KXVIII torpedoed and sank AK Chicago Maru near Catanduans in the Visayas.

The day turn began with a JAAF strike on Pucheng China: 6 resource hits. This location has lost most of its ability to generate supplies. [Very few of its resources ever leave because it is connected only by trails which are too long when the game begins. Only if it is controlled by the same side as the main EW RR can resources and supplies be used other than locally.

20 Ki-48s, escorted by 8 Ki-43s and in company with 2 Ki-15 recon planes raided Malacca, Malaya. 1 Hudson IV destroyed on the ground, 16 casualties, 1 vehicle lost, 36 other hits.

47 Zeros escorted a single Ki-46 over Manila - these were not assigned to escort that mission as such - just general escort with no target. Since no bombers flew - they went along. No CAP to engage.

27 B5M Kates and 15 Claudes raided Cebu. No CAP. 17 airfield related hits.

12 Philippine Air Forces P-26s failed to harm the IJA 16th Division at Manila - as usual. 2 shot down. He has not noticed this is using supplies and losing planes and pilots without any benefit.

A JAAF attack on the ROC 25th Field Army caused 75 casualties and 4 guns lost.

31 Ki-21s attacked the Indian Army 6th Brigade in Malaya causing 40 casualties and 1 gun lost.

4 P-35s out of Cebu missed BB Hyuga at Dipilog. 1 was lost engaging 9 Claudes on CAP.

An unspecified unit conducted an unsuccessful ASW attack on USS Trusty near Cam Rahn Bay.

24 000 Japanese attacked 52 000 Allies at Kuala Lumpur (including a large supply sink). No odds. 205 Japanese casualties and 13 gun slost. 100 Allied casualties and 4 guns lost. Fort Level 0 but the position is not going to fall for a few more days (you can tell by the casualty ratio - when the Allies lose more - they are about to lose).

6500 Japanese attacked 9400 Chinese at Pakhoi South China. This was not expected - another unit moved in. 723 Japanese casualties, 28 guns lost, 4 Chinese casualties, 1 gun lost.

Allied bombardment at Nanchang, Rabaul, General Santos and Manila were ineffective.

A Japanese shock attack by airborne at Rabaul failed because NONE of the other Army and Navy combatr units present obeyed their orders also to attack. 964 paras attacked 1792 Allies - failed to achieve odds - but only lost 7 casualties. 16 Allied losses and 1 gun lost - indicating the position is weak. We will try again tomorrow.
