AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/01/42

Well, it looks like a Regimental invasion of Midway is less than required [8D]. Scrub one IJA Regiment.

My Zeroes did fairly well in A2A but many were destroyed on the ground. Tomorrow another 40+ Zeroes will join the force here and continue to fight it out. I'm more than willing to accept an unfavourable loss ratio here in order to protect the landings - tactical loss for operational gain.

Hmm, if this ship is just off Rangoon I have got to assume that Moulmein may be much more heavily mined than I anticipated. Fortunately I brought along a few DMSs with the invasion TFs but just to be sure all my 20knot MSW and DMS are ordered to sprint north from Singapore. They can JUST make it in time to cover the landings.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Midway Island [USA]

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 2106 troops, 43 guns, 10 vehicles, Assault Value = 95

Defending force 2718 troops, 89 guns, 5 vehicles, Assault Value = 41

Japanese max assault: 162 - adjusted assault: 4

Allied max defense: 40 - adjusted defense: 42

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 3)

Japanese ground losses:
891 casualties reported
Guns lost 20
Vehicles lost 8

Allied ground losses:
24 casualties reported
Guns lost 3

Gees, that landing didn't exactly go well. Ah well, time to try again in a month or two with 3 Regiments. I don't know what went wrong here as my forces were all combat-loaded and did unload in a single day without facing too much coastal defence fire.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Pontianak [Borneo]

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 40 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1

Defending force 448 troops, 14 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 16

Allied max assault: 0 - adjusted assault: 0

Japanese max defense: 15 - adjusted defense: 13

Allied assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 0)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Midway Island [USA]

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 1764 troops, 77 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 40

Defending force 642 troops, 11 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 22

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Singora [Thailand]

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 1181 troops, 20 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 66

Defending force 4145 troops, 34 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 111

Here you can see the IJN TFs converging off the coast south of Rangoon. I have roughly 120,000 men loaded in two x 100 ship TFs covered by 8 BBs, over a dozen CAs, 1 CVA, 4 CVs, 3 CVEs and 2 CVLs ( the newly commissioned Shoho has raced from Tokyo to participate in these landings ) and a gaggle of well over 50 DDs and a dozen CLs. This force should easily land and suppress Rangoon.

Well, well, well. A B-19 unit strikes at Lahaina all the way from San Francisco. Those continental bombers are fun. They even do fairly well against fighters --- in this raid my Zeroes shot down 1 B-19 but lost 2 of their own to the enemy's defensive fire.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/03/42

Everything's almost in place. All of my surface combat, bombardment, CV, ASW and transport TFs are ordered to rendezvous 180 miles from Moulmein so as to keep open the possibility that my forces would be landing at Ye or Rangoon itself.

Tomorrow the bombardment fleet,my minesweepers and, finally, the transports will go into Moulmein. Currently my AV at Moulmein is about 160 as I've flown in the IJA Raiding Bde and elements of two Air Landing Regiments.

From now on pretty much all of my invasions ( in Sri Lanka, India, Australia, the Soviet Pacific holdings and the South-eastern Pacific ) are going to be contested invasions so I'm trying to organise this invasion ( and the deep envelopment in Java ) so as to get everything ashore more quickly so that I can learn how to do atoll invasions properly ( something I've always found tough in this game ) .

I'm currently in the process of moving all of my submarines ( except the I-120 minelaying class ) to Lahaina in order to cut the distance to the American SLOCs and thus allow my subs ( particularly the RO class boats ) to spend more time on station. This should increase their lethality.

JUST the turn that this happened La Foa auto-reverted to Allied control ( damn, computer decided that the besieged Allies would capture a base in my rear. *sigh* Well, I'm going to try to stabilise this region and make every base contested. To be honest, so long as I hold Koumac and its resources I am quite happy letting 2ndACR bring troops in a every soldier he brings in requires more transports be risked to bring in supplies and is another soldier I won't be facing when I invade Australia.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/04/42

My powerful bombardment TF - 8 BB and 13 CA escorted by 4 DD - sprints in from 180 miles south of Rangoon and levels the airfield and surrounding area overnight. Allied casualties are heavy and secure uncontested landings at Moulmein.

I also lost my first CVL today when Zuiho foundered 120 miles west of Port Blair.

Naval bombardment of Rangoon [Burma], at 29,33

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
P-40E Warhawk: 10 destroyed
B-25D Mitchell: 27 destroyed
Beaufort VII: 6 destroyed

In reality 20 P-40Es, 54 B-25s and 11 Beauforts were destroyed on the ground overnight. When this is combined with the mauling the AVG has received over recent days it can be seen that roughly 100 first-rate USAAF fighter planes have been removed from the enemy arsenal, considerably facilitating future operations.

By day's end over 1,500 AV have landed at Moulmein. If I've planned it right the other 700 or so AV of my combat troops should be fully ashore tomorrow with all of the supporting troops fully ashore by the end of the third day.

I am landing the equivalent of 1500 engineer squads so should increase Moulmein to a Level 3 Port within a couple of days. I plan to refuel and resupply there ( I have more than enough supplies and fuel-laden tankers along for the job ) and then begin moving up the Indian coast toward Calcutta with a view to drawing the Allied air force into battle over my CV TFs.

Its all going well, the main nearby airfield is destroyed, my fighters are providing CAP while my CVs and ASW TFs are standing offshore and killing subs - two Allied subs were sunk today as I put every Val I have available on-map on naval attack in the 4 hex area surrounding Moulmein - and most of my combat power is ashore by day's end.

So, the landings look like they've been a success. Subsequently the forces I was holding back in Singapore "just in case" are going to be comitted to Java to speed things up there. I have about 4,500 AV in Singapore and am going to commit the best half of that force to forcing a landing on Java in order to quickly take Batavia and unhinge the Dutch line at Soerabaja.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/09/42

Nothing of any major significance happened over the past 3 days. I shot down a few MiGs and Shturmoviks which tried to attack my forces in Russia, my forces continue to march after the Soviets from Khabarovsk, my loading for the invasion of Java has begun and my combat forces have moved north from Moulmein and are now well and truly on the road to Rangoon.

Oh my engineers also increased the port at Moulmein to Level 3 - which, per our house rules, means I can now use it to reprovision my forces.

Oh my engineers also increased the port at Moulmein to Level 3 - which, per our house rules, means I can now use it to reprovision my forces.[/b]

Could you please explaint this house rule? Is it to slow down land advances and prohib blitzkrieg operations? If so why level 3 fortifications and is this required everywhere? I'd assume it would slow down things in China pretty much as you can always prevent fort building by attacks on ports or AF's right?

Mistmatz,

It is PORTs not forts... Basically we decided that the replenishing of TFs at Level 1 ports was simply not at all reasonable and so we decided to institute a Level 3 Port rule as a minimum for refuelling, replenishment of ammo and rebuilding of airgroups.

It should help keep the pace of advance down a little and it has certainly slowed me down in the Pacific.

lol, it seems I need new glasses... [;)]
That lv3 port requirement is actually quite a nice house rule.

These training raids are really paying off. Most of these Ki-51 units ( which will upgrade to D3As once I have sufficient numbers of Vals ) are now in the mid-80s in terms of experience with a few of them verging on 90+ Exp. I've had a look at my G4M naval units ( which are the elite of my anti-shipping forces ) and many of them are in the low to mid-80s also.

Another month of this and the majority of my bomber force is going to be over 80 Exp even accounting for the losses and their replacement with untrained recruits.

Bugger, he got a unit in there before I could. Ah well, I'm going to have to buy a Brigade out of the Home Islands and send it down here... I won't denude the Home Islands though, I have over 3,000 AV there and won't go below 1,000 AV no matter what the cost on my perimeter. I'm ALWAYS concerned about the possibility of an Allied end run into Shikuka or Toyohara.

Japanese forces CAPTURE Prome [Burma] base !!!

I'm parassaulting bases in Burma in order to cut off Allied lines of retreat and also to capture choke points ahead of my tank formations. My hope is to take Burma ASAP now that I realise it is really quite lightly held and to free up my formations for use in India ASAP. Accordingly I've turned my transport formations around ( they were heading back to Malaysia ) and I'm sending them back to Rangoon to begin loading about 2/3rds of the Burmese invasion force for immediate committment along the Indian axis.

Tomorrow my ground forces attack Rangoon. This should see the defenders sufficiently attrited that Rangoon falls easily. Since I'm planning to move on to India quickly I won't go for Shock Attacks, I'll simply deliberate attack to prevent unnecessary casualties.

A 1% loss rate is well within the 3% loss rate above which these missions are no longer useful as training exercises. So, really, these raids against Chungking are an absolute bargain--- I'm achieving major strategic objectives and training some 300 bombers at the same time.

The Soviets are pushed out an while many of the resources are damaged the HI is relatively intact adding another 360+ HI to my industry. EXCELLENT !!!! I'm having a major HI squeeze at the moment and have over 300 points of armament production stopped ( and even that's not enough ). Once I get into India I should add another 1500+ HI and that should really begin to ease my problems.

120 OIL points fall into my hands. Score !!!

The whole aim of my war plan is to capture enough HI and OIL etc that I don't have to spend much supply on repairing what I capture ( since even if half of what I capture is damaged I will STILL capture more than I need ) or much supply on expanding what I begin with but up until now I still haven't broken the 13,000 HI mark. I can't wait to get into India as there's about 1500 HI just waiting to be captured there and I'm quite prepared to do the capturing and, finally, turn my war economy fully on.

This is an extremely interesting combat result as it offers up the possibility of taking Java with the forces I already have committed there. So, the plan to commit an additional 2,000 AV to landing at Kragen are scrubbed and, instead, full-scale loading is begun for the invasion of India. An additional 2,000 AV is ordered to begin loading on my transports and is now to be accompanied by the full scale of supporting troops ( 400 Aviation Support and multiple engineer regiments ).

At present I am considering plans to neutralise the enemy's airfields at Ceylon. I think that I will swap out the Val divebombers from my CVs and replace them with Kates. Then I can launch the Kates from a range of 420 miles ( safely outside of the range of the enemy Pe-2s ) and pulverise the airfields.... If, for some reason, that fails I can always send in my BBs and CAs to close both enemy airfields with naval bombardments ( which will be effective but costly given the presence of massive enemy coastal defences ).

Rangoon falls. Half of Burma is already in my hands. He really must have concentrated everything in India. A good move but I think not keeping the roads open in order to evacuate massive numbers of Chinese troops into India is, IMO, a mistake.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/13/42

Magwe secured 120 OIL sources and a nice Level 3 airfield aimed directly at Calcutta. Understandably enough 2nd ACR wanted to close it. I anticipated this and had some Zeroes waiting which did well, but not well enough. Tomorrow he'll meet twice as many and then in another day's time another 50 fighters ( Oscars since I don't have enough Zeroes ) will be added to that number.

Hmm, a single British Brigade in good, wooded terrain and behind reasonable forts manages to muster sufficient AV that it would take 3 divisions to shift. I may just bypass Akyab by now. I've operated in the seas off Burma for the past two weeks now and done everything I can to draw his attention here --- but I'm sure he still expects me to go for Ceylon. There's little point in further deceptive manoeuvring at this point. Instead I'm going to head for Ceylon ASAP from now... Four and a half IJA divisions ( plus support elements ) are loading at Rangoon in order to join with the forces moving up from Singapore. That's a total of about 350 transports on their way to Ceylon, pretty damned impressive even if I do say so myself.

I thought I should give an update on the Indian invasion force. Currently I have the following forces loaded up and in transit to India:

1. 15 Infantry Divisions : 2, 4, 5, 16, 18, 31, 33, 38, 48, 51, 52, 54, 200, 201st & Imperial Guards

2. 3 Infantry Brigades

3. 8th Tank Regiment ( the other Tank units are in Siberia or Burma )

4. 3 Major Army HQs and about 5 smaller Army HQs.

5. 10 Engineer Regiments

6. 10 AAA units ( to protect my landing beach )

7. Assorted Aviation and Air HQ units.

In total some 260,000 men are loaded up and ready to invade.

They will be supported by 6 Tank units driving upwards from Burma, 2 Airborne Bns and 2 Airlanding Bdes.

The naval component will comprise 8 BBs, 14 CAs, about 20 CLs and 70 or so DDs. In addition there will be a minimum of 60 or so smaller vessels ( DEs, DMS, MSW, PC, PG etc ) to escort the 360+ transports. CAP will be provided by 4 CVEs, 2 CVLs and 4 CVs who are swapping their Vals out for Kates in order to be able to stand off outside of Pe-2 range and bomb the enemy airfields using level bombing tactics ---- they will be aided and abbetted in this by 200+ G4Ms operating out of Tavoy and Rangoon in the level bombing role.

In short, even if the enemy opposes my landing forces all the way ( and I expect him to ) I expect to be able to provide so many targets that no significant losses are incurred before the unloading is completed ( most of my troops are loaded on 1,000 to 2,000 ton APs and AKs in order to expedite unloading.

What kind of forces can the allies bring to bear defensively in this mode? Seems like 15 divisions is a mighty big stick. I know there'd be no way to stop that this early in stock; are there enough new toys in this mod that the allies have a fighting chance, or is his best play here just to bleed you on the landing and then evac for aden?

You really have beaten allied side to submission! [:D]

As for the India adventure and judging by the game date 2/1942 I'am certain India will be pushover. My estimate is that within 2 months 90% of India has fallen. Unless (SEAC) ofcourse allies have signifcantly more ground units (divisions, brigades) than allied do have in stock.

Well, in this mod the Japanese start with two additional divisions and get an additional 4 divisions after gamestart. The Americans alone get 4 or so additional divisions so it balances out fairly well. In addition the Japanese have to buy ALL of these additional divisions out of the Home Islands ( since all these units start out assigned to the Home Islands HQs ) and the Japanese are fairly strapped for PPs.

As to the 15 divisions... Well, 13 of these divisions are present in stock so, really, I'm not invading with much additional force. I haven't, for example, taken a single unit from Manchukuo ( although I have robbed a couple of divisions from China )... I have taken the Pacific VERY much on the cheap and the loss of the US CVs has helped me tremendously in this --- I have 50 G4Ms, 60 Zeroes and 24 Mavis in the entire Pacific which gives you an idea of just how thinly I am holding it since I managed to destroy his fleet ( at great cost ) in December 41 --- so one reason I am so strong is that several Bdes which should be in the Pacific are now on ships headed to India.

Can he hold against 15 divisions? No, I doubt it. If he transferred SEAC troops from China to India from the start of the game ( something I did when I played the Allies and something I felt was necessary to hold India ) then he could hold. My best intel is that he hasn't really reinforced India at all and so I epect it to fall relatively easily---- MUCH easier than it really should fall.

Those SEAC units aren't going to be much use in China since I'm in the process of bombing their supply generating zones back into the stone age and without supplies those additional divisions won't be able to accomplish anything.

I will point out that in this version of the mod the Allied fighter and key bomber replacement rates are 50% higher and the Japanese significantly weaker in terms of strategic bomber and anti-shipping forces than they were in the version of the mod I played in as the Allies and I still held on to India into July and August 1942. So, is it possible to hold India? Yes it is possible even when Japan is stronger and the Allies weaker than in this version of the mod. Do I think 2ndACR will? No, he has made some significant strategic errors and he is about to be fullsomely punished for them... I hope [:D] [:D] [:D]

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/19/42

I've skipped a few days forward as nothing much happened in these days. My divisions are rebuilding in the Soviet Union and Java while my resource bobing campaign continues in China. My carriers and troopships are gathering south-east of Ceylon and 2ndACR knows the hammer is about to fall. Interestingly enough a day ago he hazarded a guess that some 3,500 AV was about to hit India. Figuring that a little despair would be conducive to a rapid advance I pointed out that it was much more like 6,000 AV ( and it should really be more ). Hey, anything which gets him to cluster up in his major defended cities works massively to my advantage as I'll get the resources of the rest of the country ( my real goal ) in an almost undamaged state.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Airbase supply hits 1

A purely psychological strike as I wanted to show 2ndACR the forces I can bring to bear... and to lower his morale a little by showing how overwhelming they are.... hopefully he won't fall to thinking about just how bare the rest of my perimeter must be if I have all of these bombers here now [8D]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Akyab [Burma] , at 30,28

Japanese aircraft
D3A2 Val x 208

And akyab is closed... just to add a little confusion as to where the landings will be... although I don't think there can be much doubt I'm going to land at Ceylon anymore.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Trincomalee [Ceylon] , at 13,25

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zeke x 59
C3N1 Kate x 8
B5N2 Kate x 141

Allied aircraft

Spitfire VB: 16 destroyed
Pe-2: 8 destroyed
Sunderland III: 1 destroyed

Allied ground losses:
4 casualties reported

Airbase hits 8
Airbase supply hits 6
Runway hits 46

The really good news here is that 16 Pe-2s and 21 Spitfires were destroyed on the ground. That's a LOT of my CVs and fighters saved from certain destruction. Tomorrow I'm going to hit this area with Bettys and Nells ( suffering significant losses to be sure but c'est la guerre ) while my Kates divide their attention between the base and the nearby Allied shipping. At ALL times my forces will stay more than 6 hexes from both bases in Trincomalee until it is time to rush in and land on the raillines south-west of Colombo.

My CVs and Bettys will continue to hit ( and close ) Trincomalee while my bombardment TF ( 7 BBs and 8 CAs ) rushes in to close Colombo in order to cover the unloading of the 350,000+ troops. Circumstances will them dictate where I go from there.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Pearl Harbor [Oahu] , at 114,72

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zeke x 9
Ki-21-II Sally x 102

No Japanese losses

Airbase hits 5
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 30

Isn't it interesting how the raids on the airfield at PH suffer low losses while hitting the ground forces there causes significant loss. This is a consistent and repeatable finding. I think this must point to either:
a) different algorithms being used or
b) different supply levels for the Infantry divisions and the base.

The map shows my TFs approaching Ceylon. The bright green line shows the range of Pe-2s operating out of the bases in Ceylon while the dark green line shows their range if operating from MADRAS. As you'll note there is a single hex of Ceylon which is out of range of the enemy Pe-2s operating out of Madras if the two airbases on Ceylon are closed. This hex is where my troops will land... And, yes, it is fair to say that the Pe-2s have my scared silly. I don't mind losing a few transports to them but I won't lose CVs and CVLs to those monsters.
