Andy Mac v Nemo OMG what have I let myself in for !!!!!

Post by Andy Mac »

OK Nemo and I are doing a game on his fantasy in the pacific mod I am not doing a full AAR because I probably dont have time to keep 3 up but he will be doing and i will answer questions as and when they arise (if they arise) in this thread so Nemo will stay out it.

Nemo and I are pretty much 100% apart on how to play the game so this should be interesting !!!! So every one is aware I am pretty much treating this as a Lunacy game and with the modded changes based off of Cids excellent EOS I expect to get my arse well and trully kicked for at least 18 - 24 months.

The allies get a lot of late war toys and some early ones including Grants 2 months early, an extra Inf Div in India plus a greatly strengthened RN after mid 43 (any surviving C and D class get a really nice upgrade to make them proper CLAA's, Hawking and Frobisher get a real monster of a surface warfare upgrade then as well) The RN get 4 and the RCN 2 new Fiji class CL's and 12 Tribals plus several carriers early to help with a reinvasion of India (yup I expect to have a hard fight to keep it especially with the low replacement aircraft numbers in this mod.)

Unfortuantely the IJN and IJA are also very significanlty upgraded

Basically this is a for fun game where we more or less ignore history so please dont bother reading it if its going to offend !!!!

OK I Need some advice on RHS China has anyone played it that can give me some tips as Pauk will confirm I am the worlds worst China player so I need HELP !!!!

Agreed HRules below Nemo is a very aggressive player and I expect him to go 110% so anything not specifically banned is allowed

Global

No paratroopers just to force surrenders unless you believe you have a realistic chance of taking the base – the player may not succeed that’s fog of war and bad rolls but don’t drop a para unit onto a retreat path of an army just to force it to surrender.

60 Day var reinforcements
Doctrine off for both sides.
Advanced Weather on
Allied DC Adv on

Turn 1

1 Port Attack

Landings on day 1 to be agreed within pre agreed limits basicall Palmyra ok Guadalcanal not nothing west of Singapore on day 1 plus other limits actually this has been the biggest issue of debate so far but we have agreed that Nemo can hit Aluetians/ Centpac Islands including Palmyra and Johnstone, Rabaul and some bases in Wester Celebes/Borneo but will not be within 180 miles of Amboina/Balikapan or Kendari on turn 1

Nemo is allowed to use Paras to arttack Burmese bases but I am allowed to act like Burma is on a war footing so we each get something out of it

Surprise on

General

PP costs to be paid for transfer of land units between Kwan and China Army
PP costs to be paid between Allied restricted command – specifically India Command before used in Burma
Russia active but hot war from 1/43 if allowed by either side with no warning
Russia air attacks by Jap and Russian forces allowed to and from border bases – no resource bombing prior to hot war, Russian ships put to see at own risk and may be LR CAPPED by Russian fighters (Tankers and AK’s primarily)
Allied forces may transit aircraft through Russia but may not perform ops from there/ If an IJAAF raid destroys allied aircraft this transfer is deemed to be spotted and any restriction on Japanese only for starting hot war prior to 1/43 is lifted

Subs and raiders may enter shipping channels (nothing larger than a CL but including AMC’s)
Carriers and land based air may not strike from or into the channels (for the avoidance of doubt the allies could launch an offensive out of Aden but may not have carriers fly sorties other than CAP, ASW or Naval Search while in the channel UNLESS a raider is sighted inside the channel)
Aden and other bases in channels may not be bombed
Allies may not launch bombers from Channel bases
Air mining is limited to 1 Sqn per night phase
Resource Bombing is allowed
PT Boats no limit by either side except where less than 4 ship sqns in multiples are used to reduce bombardments
No limit on air stacking
No Limit on carrier stacking
India and China are both deemed vulnerable as is Russia – map edge expoitation is fair game allied player beware but if taken will be garrisoned. In case of China and Russsia at least one base will be left to allow respawning or arriving troops to be placed (it can be the worst supply useless only gotten to by trail craphole but one will be left !!!!)

Ah! Nice and sounds KEWL! [8D]
But for a second before I open the topic I had a doubt, I thought maybe you would have turned Japanese for this one... Well not this time again hey? [:D]

I am not a good enough player to play Japan (plus I have no real interest in doing so)

When you get a chance, can you post some screen shots of what the channels looks like around the edges that will be permitting you to move units form the east to the west off map. There are probably a lot of players like myself that have not seen the changes to the map for RHS.

Enjoy your game with Nemo. [:D][:D] I will be following your AAR.

OK turn 1 well what to say I didnt specify clearly enough and Nemo did well.

He used his one port attack on Manila by Using LBA (I Normally insist the 1 port attack is by Carrier Air and I forgot to mention this to nemo so its my fault)

He crucified the AF at Pearl and I do mena crucified it will be closed for weeks which could be very very bad.

Basically mini KB is off of Singapore, main KB at Pearl and Manila and all subs in port sunk by LBA nasty very nasty this is going to be hyperwar indeed

OK we did turn 1 and he wiped me out I then realised that his two monster carriers were part of the reason they were available at start and that is to much.

These carriers have 400 AA weapons 150 Armour on the flightdeck and are basically unsinkable

I was happy for them to be in the mod but not both available at start.

Nemo generously offered to take them out of the war but I feel the damage done is too much we are therefore changing the mod slightly and restarting which is irritating

My point is with 200 A/C and basically unsinkable design without a lot of torpedo planes those monsters are pretty much invincible and it gives the Japanese too much combat power for 41 - he agrees so we are phasing them.

Holy crap Andy, that was one hell of a hit @ Manila! Where were all of the Lilys and Sallys stationed - Takeo? What really kicked butt was the (what looked to me) total trashing of the PI plus the closure of air bases @ Singapore, Manila. PH would have been bad also if Nemo was planning on sitting off shore for 3-5 days. It looked to me like Nemo had basically captured PI on turn 1 - lol.
Was Nemo also prepping a heavy invasion of Malaya similiar in fashion to what he did in the PI?

I'm glad you guys did a restart - that would have been a brutal first 3 months...

Dont get me wrong I still expect it to be brutal but without the supercarriers it will be slightly slower.

One thing to remember he had not hit my Battleships on turn 1 now what does this mean if I run I die ---- but and this is a big but if I form up all the PH BB's IN TF's in PORT at PH their AA adds 50% to the AA over PH.

After turn 1 PH becomes an extremely nasty flak trap. If I run I die so I may as well stand and fight.

Manila is going to get creamed no matter what I do but without 200 more carrier air I have a shot at saving some of the Malayan AF and posibbly save a couple of ships from Manila.

Manila is going to get creamed no matter what I do but without 200 more carrier air I have a shot at saving some of the Malayan AF and posibbly save a couple of ships from Manila.

Do you have a couple of ships left in Manila? <grin> The AA @ PH makes sense but I still think the BBs will take enough damage to leave them in the repair docks for a long time... You'd trash a lot of his high experience pilots tho...

For the restart, will Nemo run basically the same opening turn? Are you two testing out the mod to gage the effectiveness of removing the super CVs or is this a down-and-dirty game?

Down and dirty I expect the same turn because its optimised and I can do nothing about it anyway I will need to discuss whether I change my opening move or not

I would suggest that port attacks can be made ONLY by naval air units on turn 1. Not the whole Japanese airforce at the PI. I would suggest that a random number of ships (probably subs) be allowed to sortie from Manila. You could use a multipler and use the last number in the time of a post to be that number. As an example, in your post #10 that number would be "3" and then use the multiplier.

As you know, Nemo likes to hunt down Allied BB's and DMS's as they don't respawn. Anything that doesn't re-spawn are high priority ships for him. [;)]

Aye that is my normal house rule as well 1 port attack by carrier air only BUT I made a mistake when we agreed the houserules by assuming that was Nemos interpretation of one port attack as well - it wasn't he believes that IJAAF could have been used for the day 1 port attack.

As I made the mistake on houserules by not being explicit and clear on our first run through it was my mistake Nemo quite rightly is insisting on the same house rule for turn 1 on the restart.

I am not willing to disagree with him on this issue as it is I suspect a fundamental difference of opinion so I will lose my sub force on day 1 - so be it !!!

With all of those LBs that hit Manila, Nemo must have set the mod up to really lay waist to the port on T1 - this is designed - yes?

I am still not convinced the mod is going to work I have objected to the AA suites on some of his ships at start and he has moved a few back I have gained my Beauforts from start which gives the RAF some real bite at start in India.

Re Manila the terrifying part is that if I got him to agree to no LB attack on the Port he will just come up with something nastier to do to me with them so its almost better the debil you know !!!!

I have about 4 (which will rise to 6 with natural growth/recovery of disablements) Divisions in India at start with 4 more in Malaya and 2 in Burma

I get 2 more Divs in India in the first 3 months plus 2 Australian Divs that could be used

If I could get Malaya Army and Burma Corps back to India intact I would be confident of holding but lets face it he will cut off malaya and perform a Hyper war assault on India and I think try to take it on the run by January.

Now I have to think about how to defend India

There are 4 possible landing zones.

1. North - Direct assault on Bombay or Karachi even Nemo I think will not try this without Ceylon.

2. West - Madras Area this is the most dangerous possibility as a Japanese foothold at Madras makes the whole of lower India undefendable

3. East - This is the best option for me a landing on or near Calcutta I have a chance of containing and even if I fail I can retreat my forces north in an orderly fashion.

4. Ceylon then North or West or North AND West - I think this is by far the most likely option secure Ceylon then go for a short landing at madras and a deep landing at Bombay.

OK I have 4 - 6 Divs to defend this lot I am open to Ideas ?

My initial thoughts

1. Fight as hard as possible for Ceylon without committing to much if he goes for it. Do not reinforce I dont have the LCU's. - Mine the approaches, hold my sups in and arround it, keep a reserve of experienced Torpedo Bombers in India.

2. Forward defend III Corps with 2 Divs centred on Calcutta

3. SEAC with 2 Divs centred on Madras

4. 2 Divs around Hyderabad in reserve

5. All reconstituting shell units move to Karachi to cover the north.

6. 'GOTH' Plan prepared in North India around Karachi Area possibly with line Milir - Delhi as this allows some inland bases to be retained free from bombardments.

Ceylon is the best bet for Nemo. From there he will have LBA to cover his invasion and force you to defend most of the coast line. He will probably invade from Ceylon to cut India in half and prevent you from bring units from SW India up towards Karachi due to his expereince of having Karachi last so long in his previous Lunacy game in which it lasted so long without reinforcements.
The big question is do you abandon Burma and Ragoon from day one and try to get as many troops from there back to India?? If you were playing someone else, I would say no. But Nemo feels that knocking out India is priority 1 when it comes to land combat (IJA). Then he will use IJN to isolate and take Hawaii.
The SRA and PI are secondary for him. He is a German Panzer commander and will by-pass bases to get to his goals.

Do you have strategic lifting capacities that would allow you to bring Burma forces to India by sea ? Otherwise you risk having them cut of in Northeastern India or Burma once he invades...

Not really those ultra long range bombers of his will have the range from turn 1

I should be able to get cadres of most units back to India I suspect but they wont be much use if he invades before May. I guess I need to put up a major fight in the Malacca straight and if he goes for Ceylon make it so expensive for him that he cannot proceed quickly !!!!!

My main issue with this mod is that it really really focuses the allies into one strategy - the full no holds barred Sir Robin !!!!

Trying to stand on Malaya or Java or even fight it out on Sumatra just will not work because Nemo will be so aggressive that he will totally bypass everything.

Now it appears that the trails section to Burma is only one hex wide so 60 miles I could just do a full evac over the mountains from day 1

You will need every soldier you can get in India. I think you should make a full evacuation of Burma from the start and also evacuate as much of Malaya Army as you can. I expect sealanes to be closed very quickly but you could use patrol planes to move as much as possible.

OK I am severely hung over but I agree India has to be my no.1 priority I need to get fragments back ASAP from Malaya and if possible march at least 1 Div over the mountains if I dont the fight for India becomes that much harder

Hi, This scenario is not one I would ever be interested in playing myself (As Japan or Allies)
However I am interested in whether or not the Allied player is capable of holding a position outside the DEI.

To defend India several things must be done as soon as possible.
1. Supply must be moved to primary forward defense lines (Chandpur area) You simply cannot allow this area to fall and if it is cut off from resupply it will have to make do with what it already has. So as soon as supply is built up at supply source you must send as much as possible south.

2. You cannot permit enemy forces to enter India via land routes. They must rely on naval transport for movement and supply so blocking positions are required at akyab and Mandalay. They must be large enough to withstand attacks from 3 or 4 Japanese divisions. (1600 AV) 800 Allied AV dug in level 9 with supply should be enough against all but massive Japanese advances.

since it will be impossible for you to deploy enough AV in coastal bases to withstand massive landings you have to instead form blocking forces on RR behind these bases. Japan will capture the base but be unable to advance from them. If you knew exactly what bases he was going to target you could defend the base.
You actually probably have forces to retake a base if your not scattered all over the place tied to defense.

so in order of priority.
send supply and sufficient LCU to prevent link up between Japanese seaborne and land advancing forces.
defend for primary supply source with forces able to handle maxim Japanese sea borne effort directly against it.
concentrate all remaining forces on supply route out of range of Japanese naval air and dig in to block any enemy advance. Be prepared once actual mainland India target of naval landing is known to move forces in response. (The old "let them land and then throw them into sea" defense

If you leave a base empty your supply should exit so Japan will not capture any. do not build Ceylon except for fort levels and remove excess supply. (mine the crap out it and surrounding waters)

Primary function of your air force is to protect your surface fleet defending your primary supply source.

Keep him in the DEI as long as possible. Sure he will avoid strong points but if you own airfields he will have to maintain forces against them. You want airfields that allow your groups to transfer between them as needed. He can't invade India without first owning Singapore. even light allied air there will make resupply of Ceylon/India costly.

Japan cannot commit much over 2400 AV to invade India without having land connection. So if you emplace 2000 or so AV he will be stopped. I don't know what the LCU in this mod look like.

You have to secure the inner RR from para drops but 100 or so AV dug in should protect from most attacks.

Good Luck
