Lunacy or Shrewdness?

Post by Nemo121 »

WARNING!!!
This game is an ANARCHY rules game. Basically whatever is possible in-game which conforms to Newtonian physics AND which isn't a clear exploitation of an error in the game's code is allowed. 600 4-engined bombers bombing Tokyo in May 1942? Fine. Attempts by the Japanese to knock the Soviets out of the war? That's fine too. Night bombing, massive battleline bombardments etc. All are fine.

If you prefer to limit Japanese or American potential even more than Newtonian physics and the game's design allows then you will NOT enjoy this AAR. If that's the case then please don't read on, go to an AAR by 2nd ACR, Mogami, Saueracker, Przemcio etc and read them. You WILL enjoy them and not waste your time reading something you dislike.

Well after an abortive game using NikMod 5.0 which I feel has severely impacted the ability of air forces to attack surface TFs with good AAA protection I went back to V 1.795 and began a Scenario 15 game with "Itsjustme". We have agreed to have no house rules at all since V1.795 seems to be a major improvement in most areas but we both have agreed that if we come across something which is "broken" in the game then we won't try to exploit it. The example I used for this was air-dropped mining missions being immune to CAP and thus being off limits. I'm glad to say Trey agreed. We've also agreed to keep at it unless something truly catastrophic happens to one or other side (e.g. KB being sunk in its entirety by mid-december as happened under my NikMod game with the Allies getting close to 5 times the bomb hits per sortie relative to the elite KB pilots... and the reason I ceded the laurels in that game).

I'm an adherent of Soviet doctrine which stresses the need to gain every bit of intelligence possible and then hit hard at the decisive point(s). It also stresses maskirovka operations and hopefully I'll be able to learn how to conduct them during the course of this game. Since, on December 7th, I have pretty much perfect intelligence and it falls within the purview of our "house rules" to use that information to my advantage I plan to drive "spokes" through the enemy's initial defensive dispositions, piercing the integrity of his perimeter at multiple points and leaving many isolated enemy units to be mopped up at my leisure.

Benefits:
1. If I can break the enemy's perimeter and interdict his Sea Lines of Communication (SLOCs) I can destroy much of his shipping as it flees from Malaysia, the DEI and the Phillipines.
2. By interdicting the enemy's SLOCs and ALOCs (Air Lines of Communication) I can prevent most of the redeployment of his defensive assets which would otherwise occur. This will tend to preserve my intelligence advantage, an important consideration to Soviet doctrine.
3. By preserving my intelligence advantage I can task minimal forces to each mission thus allowing me to carry out far more concommittant missions than the Allies expect.
4. By carrying out operations in parallel rather than in series I can complicate the enemy's operational situation and, in the absence of sufficient intelligence, it is unlikely that the enemy will be able to task minimal but sufficient forces to block each of my weak thrusts and will, instead, either commit insufficient force against each thrust or, more probably, overwhelming force against just a few of my thrusts.
5. I also expect to liberate Java by the end of December and attrit his air forces in the region such that I can begin the flow of supplies to Japan by mid-January at the latest.

Disadvantages:
1. The obvious risks inherent in cutting off an enemy position is that being surrounded is often more a state of mind than a physical reality. If, for example, I take Kendari but leave Mendano and Macassar in enemy hands then one could easily argue that Kendari is the base which is cut off and vulnerable to interdiction of its supplies/counter-attack. Of course I am attempting to avoid that situation by hitting so many bases at the same time that even if some don't fall I will have a fair number of Size 4 AFs in the midst of the enemy position from which to launch Betty/Nell strikes.

2. Losses to my transport fleet will be extremely high in the first month. I would not be surprised to lose 2 AP/AKs a day for the month of December with a similar number heavily damaged every month. Overall my best guess is that by the end of the month I will have lost about 4 CLs, a dozen DDs and somewhere in the region of 60 APs/AKs. If I can hit hard and fast and take the resource regions in exchange for those losses then I think that will have been a bargain well made.

3. 2nd PBEM and I had to pull out of the first one after a disastrous CV combat ( although I think that had a lot to do with the mod and not the stock game)...

Overall plan...

My overall plan is simply to take everything west of Pearl Harbour as quickly as possible before establishing multiple interlocking Betty/Nell bases. With a line of Glen-equipped subs east of PH and the KB in reserve at Wake or Kwajalein I should be able to respond quickly to any invasion TFs staging from either the West Coast or PH towards the outpost line of islands at either Midway, Johnson or Palmyra/Christmas Island. Certainly they will fall but in the falling they will buy me time to fortify my main line of resistance. The Betty/Nell airbase line should prevent convoys to Australia using any but the most circuitous and southerly routes. I intend to use my CVEs along these SLOCs in order to make any such convoys very costly indeed. Ideally I'd love to look at capturing New Zealand and basing Bettys/Nells there so that I could stop putting such mileage on my CVEs but I think that may prove to be a case of "an island chain too far".

I intend to take the Phillipines whilst preserving as much of my force as possible. Overall I would expect to commit 4 divisions in the first wave of landings at Lingayen and other northern beaches, a couple of tank regiments and some engineer regiments. My air support of this invasion will be minimal as I plan to use all of my army bombers over Malaysia as I am committing only 3 infantry divisions to this theatre and need the bombers to make up for the missing combat power.

My Brigades and Regiments are tasked with targets throughout the DEI with a view to taking Java as quickly as possible and isolating Southern Borneo. Landings will take place at Miri (1 NLF), Jesselton (1 NLF), Brunei (1 NLF), Kuching (1 NLF & 1 BF), Singkawang (1 NLF & 1 BF), Pontianak ( 1 Regiment), Banjarmasan (1 Regiment), Soerbaja ( 2 Regiments & AAA & BF & SNLF), Kendari ( about 6 NLFs and a large BF). Elsewhere several large convoys are transporting troops to Songhkia to begin a drive southwards to Singapore. I am deeply distrustful of my ability to fend off all the British torpedo bombers and amn't willing to risk all the escorts to torpedo bombers and, potentially, Force Z so I'm taking the less costly option of landing at Songkhia and taking more losses to my transports but less to my escorts. I think I have more transports to lose than escorts. My initial wave will comprise 3 divisions with a fourth division held in reserve ready to land behind the enemy lines if they choose to adopt a northerly defence. If the British troops withdraw into Singapore the 4th division will be free to be committed as opportunities arise elsewhere. I am strongly considering the option of just sitting at Johore Bahru with a single Infantry Division, fortifying to Level 9 and bombing Singapore's runways and ports in order to burn supply. That way I can prevent these units being of use to the Allies whilst freeing up several divisions, tank and engineer regiments for other missions.

I'm very worried about Force Z and the forces in the Phillipines and since Trey has agreed to allow any number of port attacks/first turn teleporting under our "if it isn't exploiting a definite, known game bug then you can do it" rule I plan to Port Attack both the Phillipines and Singapore heavily and am bringing my battleline ( 8 BBs, a couple of CAs and a CS) to Soerabaja to both bombard the defending troops, try to keep Force Z away from my vulnerable transports AND do a massive number on his docked shipping. My four minelaying subs are evenly split between the Singapore and Manila. Hopefully whatever doesn't get hit by the Port Attacks will hit mines on its escape.

Hong Kong is to be attacked by the 38th division with support from two engineer regiments and all the artillery available. The Phillipines will be attacked by 4 divisions supported by tank and engineer regiments in the first wave. These will be reinforced by the 21st Division from Japan and, depending on circumstances, the 38th from Hong Kong. Ideally I would like to take the Phillipines quickly, bottle up Singapore and then take the approximately 10 divisions of troops thus freed up and utilise them for further offensive actions. Obviously though none of that will work out once contact is made with the enemy.

Kido Butai comprises all CVs and CVLs and has been tasked with mounting a strong attack on Pearl Harbour. I intend to strike the port with all Kates on 7th December while 3 Daitai of Zeros and all Daitais of Vals will strike the airfield. I want to be sure to close the field for at least two days so that on 8th December the combined strength of my Vals and Kates can be hurled at the Port. I have NEVER succeeded in taking out any battleships and this time I want results even if it means stripping other fronts of CVL support and taking extreme risks. Strong submarine wolfpacks guard both Midway, the approach to Wake and the gap between French Frigate Shoals and Johnson Island. No matter which way his carriers move I want to have a shot at them with my submarines. I doubt I'll get lucky but if I try I might. If I don't, I won't.

In the southern pacific several small convoys make for Pago-Pago, Palmyra etc. These are covered by my CVE-based air combat TF screened by the Oi, Kitakami and several DDs. Strong forces make for Port Moresby, Lunga, Noumea and Rabaul. I want these bases for my Bettys/Nells so that I can strangle the Australian Navy's ability to counter-attack. So long as my Eastern Pacific Betty Line (EPBL) and KB can keep his carriers east of Pago-Pago I should be able to completely strangle the Australian Navy's ability to run any major offensives within range of my Bettys. My long-term plans in the south involve the isolation of Fiji and its eventual reduction.

Events in Australia will have to await the unfolding of events. I am interested in capturing Darwin and the other Northern Australian bases in order to forestall enemy LBA actions against my resource centres and also New Zealand and Hobart intrigue me. New Zealand offers the possibility of cutting Australia off from American resupply convoys and if Hobart could be taken Sydney would be in range of port attacks and torpedo-carrying Nells. All in all an excellent way to strangle Australia's ability to launch either amphibious invasions or a land based bomber offensive at a minimal cost. Which of the options I go for:
a) making resupply a little more difficult... Holding Noumea, Pago-Pago etc and forcing southerly routing of convoys combined with sub wolfpacks and CVE raids.
b) cutting off American resupply... accomplished by taking New Zealand in addition to the above.
c) strangling Australia's offensive ability... accomplished by the above in addition to taking Hobart and the northern Australian bases ( Darwin to Broome Field).
d) the capture of Australia... I don't think has ever been done. I surely don't expect to be able to do this.

So, it all depends on the first stage. I'm confident the DEI invasions will go well but am unsure how Malaysia and the Phillipines will go. If they go well I can, potentially, mobilise 9 divisions + a few Brigades and Regiments ( 1 division would have to hold Johore Bahru while 2 more would be used to keep the pressure up in Burma) and could look at India and Australia.

Now onto the execution:

Looks like there are no airplanes at Kuantan. Still, I want to maintain the fiction of a possible landing on the east coast of Malaysia for as long as possible. The longer I can keep enemy forces pinned there the more chance I have to cut them off from Singapore.

Ah, that'll put a crimp in Force Z. The single torpedo in Repulse shouldn't do much damage but the two torpedoes in the Prince of Wales should slow it down and make it less able to sortie to take out my invasion APs & AKs. I'm very happy with this as I was very worried about Force Z.

105 Kates make torpedo runs on the enemy ships and score 37 hits on the 8 BBs. It costs my 19 Kates but at the end of their runs 3 of the enemy Battleships are confirmed as being heavily damaged with only one of the BBs escaping heavy damage. My Vals and Zeros do a good job on the airfield and not only destroy a lot of planes but also heaivly damage the runway and service facilities. Things are looking good for my 2nd strike on December 8th.

Hmm, a heavy battle with losses on both sides. Unfortunately my DDs got clobbered by the Coastal Guns as I wasn't confident enough with the game mechanism handling Escort TFs to split the DDs from the battleline.

The Coastal Defence guns are back in action. It seems they are only hitting my DDs. Perhaps they only have range to hit those targets which must approach closely to bombard. There's a lesson here for me. Maybe I should split the DDs from the battleline when it bombards in order to preserve them for future actions?

Overall a pretty succesful opening day. I'm ashore everywhere and have done well in most places. Kuching looks like it will be tough to take but I'm happy with Soerabaja and the other important targets. I feel I should take them all over the next few days.

My battleline stays at Soerabaja both to draw enemy air attacks on itself, bombard the enemy port and airbase into nothingness and to prevent enemy ships from escaping.

Below is a pictorial representation of my thrusts. The red lines show the Week 1 objectives with the black lines showing what I plan to be doing during the 2nd week, from 14th December to 21st December.

RE: Lunacy or Shrewdness?

Post by Nemo121 »

The initial plan continues except with 1 modification...

Multiple enemy surface TFs seem to be racing out from PH in all directions. Some are heading South, some east, some north. In the meantime I can see an enemy TF moving east north of Johnson Island. I am worried this might be his CV TF and after the result of the battle under NikMod I don't want to get sandwiched between US CVs and PH's surface TFs so I head north about 200 miles and place myself to hit many of his escaping surface TFs. With any luck his runways will remain closed, I'll stay out of range from his CVs and I can butcher some surface ships.

Unfortunately his CV TF movements spooked me into prepping for a surface battle and now his small ships are paying the price.

So far so good. A few places have held out against my forces but in most places I'm doing pretty well and, most importantly, I've taken Kendari. This is crucial to my SLOC interdiction plan for the DEI and Northern Australia.

Boy, talk about gaming the game. That is some heavy exploitation of the turn 1 warp movement. Too gamey for me.

Well, we'd agreed to "our" limits and what I did falls within those limits. In any case I don't buy that the Japanese were historically incapable of making strong moves into the DEI and South-east Pacific on December 7th. I mean if the KB had historically hit Manilla I'm quite sure people here would be haring around calling everyone who used KB to hit Pearl Harbour a "gamey exploiter" who couldn't have got carriers within range of PH without being spotted yet historically that is what did happen.

Anyways, the ground rules for this game, as I explained, are "if it is physically possible and isn't an exploitation of a game BUG then it is fair game". My opponent seems to have no problem with these moves and he'll benefit in the same manner when it comes time for his riposte.

Nemo, you of course decide what kind of game you want to play - lord have mercy on your opponent...

However what gets me is pretending this is something that it isn't. I take it your threat title is a reference to Mog's Lunacy games. Mog was entirely open about the fact that history was out the window and that he'd use every exploit in the game. I can't help feel it's a bit disingenuous to play this kind of game and state otherwise.

I don't buy that the Japanese were historically incapable of making strong moves into the DEI and South-east Pacific on December 7th.

The Japanese obviously had the capability in terms of raw power. The problem is that the 1st turn warp allows you to do so unopposed. You've traversed 100's of miles of Allied territory without being attacked. Begs the question: Why, then, didn't the Japanese do so RL? Further, how do we reconcile the Allies being universally surprised with deep Japanese moves? Your rather substantial TF's would have travelled several days through Dutch territory before turning up at Soeraboja, yet still managed complete surprise - about as realistic as Osama bin Laden getting a US tourist visa.
I mean if the KB had historically hit Manilla I'm quite sure people here would be haring around calling everyone who used KB to hit Pearl Harbour a "gamey exploiter" who couldn't have got carriers within range of PH without being spotted yet historically that is what did happen.

Personally I doubt it - few players, if any, have objections against the Manila port attack. Either way, the problem isn't attacks on the fringe of the Allied perimeter...
My opponent seems to have no problem with these moves and he'll benefit in the same manner when it comes time for his riposte.

Huh? How so? When will he get this bonus move?

I don't quite get the JFB obsession with overrunning the SRA with the bonus move. IMO, it's essantially cheating, not because it's fast, but because it's unopposed. What's the problem? Are JFB's afraid to have to work for their gains? If you want easy victories, why not just play the AI?

Actually, one gentleman recieved his new visa (he applied to stay longer in US) ... posthumously. He died as a terrorist suicide pilot on Septeber the 11th.

Nikmod won't prevent what some consider "excessive" use of the Turn 1 bonus, but it makes the "Octopus strategy" far less viable.

Holy Shiznit.

I won't say "exploiting" first turn (they did say minimal house rules after all, they -know- what they're getting into).

But Holy Shiznit, that's a LOT of movment. It definately pushes the evelope of "what is possible with Japan".

D_mn.

I'm glad I'm not on the recieving end of this.

I must admit to being nonplussed at many of these comments... not surprised but disappointed.

Let me spell it out for you:
1. We agreed to the only house rule being no exploits of obvious game BUGS.
2. Using this house rule as my basis I came up with an offensive plan to get the most advantage out of the GAME FEATURES ( as opposed to BUGS).
3. It seems to have worked out relatively well for me but it has disadvantages also.

If I had done this when we had different house rules, sure, it'd be cheating etc but everything I did is entirely within the scope of the game my opponent and I agreed to play. If we had agreed different house rules I would have come up with a very different opening. Now what I don't get is why some people, instead of either reading the AAR or making helpful comments ( since I'm very new to WiTP) just post negatively. What's the point to it?

Nomad, sure cross me off your list of opponents but why post about it AND why overlook the fact that if you set different house rules I would have abided by them and if they precluded this sort of 1st turn explosion then it wouldn't have happened. So, say it to yourself or start a new thread discussing the issue of acceptable house rules. Why do you feel the need to post that publicly in this thread?

Timtom, I've heard a couple of references to the Lunacy games but never read more than that. So, no, this isn't a reference to those games at all. I'm VERY new to WiTP and my question was intended to show that I wasn't sure if my plan would result in over-extension and defeat in detail or would prove shrewd. I find it interesting but disappointing that people can ask what something refers to, interpret it and then give out about the implications of that interpretation all without ever waiting to hear if their interpretation is on-target or completely off-base.

As to the benefit the Allied player will get... Well, I get a 1 turn move bonus, he gets unfettered access to 4 engined bombers etc etc to do whatever he pleases with... No game constraints, except exploitation of obvious bugs ( air-dropped mining missions are out of bounds since they can't be intercepted). So that's his advantage and it'll last for longer than my access to the move bonus will.

So, to make this CLEAR to everyone... I am NEW. This is, in effect, my 2nd PBEM and I've only had WiTP for about 3 weeks in total. My opponent and I agreed a game in which we would not exploit obvious BUGS but everything else would be fair game ( 10,000 mines around a port... Fine!, Japanese invasion and capture of everything on the map? Fine!... 600 4-engined bombers raiding every Japanese base by 3/42... If the Allied player can manage it then FINE!). The opening moves surely do take advantage of the 1st turn move bonus and I make no apologies for that. Those are the ground rules we agreed on. If they aren't house rules you'd agree on that's fine too but don't judge THIS game by your parameters since they don't apply.

I began this thread and titled it as I did in order to get feedback I could learn from. If you don't want to play a game with these house rules, fine, don't agree to them. I would have no problem playing with different rules to preclude this sort of Turn 1 starburst. However I think it is a bit of an abuse to jump into a thread I began in order to LEARN from more experienced players and start bitching about moves etc which are completely consistent with the house rules my opponent agreed to. He agreed to them and has more experience than me so I'm sure he knew what he was getting into.

So, please, if you want to give out about people who use different house rules then start a thread about that in the main forum and if you never want to play me, fine but posting either of those things isn't really germane to this thread. So, if you want to give out to me for something please just PM me and don't clutter the thread.

You know, I'd been warned that this forum was likely to be very unforgiving and somewhat hostile to newcomers, seems like they were right. Anyways, my opponent knew what he agreed to and has no complaints about the moves so far. If he wanted a different game he could have asked for different house rules and I'd have abided by them. I think it is silly to be expected to be accountable to third parties for seeking maximum advantage within the parameters agreed between me and my opponent.

LOL! I just had a thought, how crazy is it to be defending myself to people I amn't even playing for being "gamey" while my opponent has no problems with what has happened? Answer: very ;).

Note to self: Must get out more [:D]

Ok, I'll post this "defence" and then I'll just stick to game topics although if anyone wants to educate me more about which house rules are pretty much universal and which invasions are considered "bad form" then if they start a thread to discuss it and post the link I'd love to learn from that discussion THERE... but not here.

My dear Nemo121:

Well well, you certainly have discovered what it's like to run afoul of the referees in here, self-appointed though they may be!

But, consider things from their prespective for a moment.

I'm not sure this has anywhere been so plainly stated within this forum, but there is a certain feeling or belief in the need for a contribution in gameplay of some quality. The foremost requirement for this contribution is realism, historicity. That is to say, it must be believable.

As Andy Mac so beautifully stated in his AAR using Alikchi's new mod versus Sneer (with characteristic dry wit) something to the effect of, 'while sailing the most heavily traveled sea lanes in the world, the carriers of the Empire of Japan carried out an attack on Singapore today, accomplishing complete surprise'. Any one of us would smile at such a claim, and rightfully so, because the idea is absurd. No one would give the slightest credence to the realism of the AAR; Andy Mac and Sneer are merely having a go at the new mod for Alikchi's (and ultimately our) benefit.

Nemo, I have read your introductory paragraphs, and I understand your purposes in creating this thread. You obviously have a mind for strategy and tactics, for planning and execution, for taking calculated risks. This is all to the good I assure you.

But I ask you to consider just how far the strategic thinking on the part of Japan has progressed in this forum up to the present time, and then ask yourself whether or not your efforts will genuinely contribute to it. For example, we have been witness to the growth of a truly refined strategy in the taking of the SRA by such people as esteban and Cap_and_Gown (the latter displaying a model of clockwork military precision), esteban himself stating the essence of it when he said "The point is not necessarily in taking it quickly, but in taking it efficiently". I heartily concur. And I completely agree with PzB's concepts of a hugely costly central Pacific defence, of pauk's 'best defence of the SRA being accomplished in northern Australia' (LOL), and of (I can't remember whose, forgive me) concept of mutually supporting airbases toward playing a shell-game with Allied heavy bombers. And Sneer has shown conclusively what a lethal combination aggression with organization can pose.

You see, should you show sufficient brilliance to wrest India from the UK and leaving them shaken in Karachi, leave the Chinese starving in their own forests and mountains, isolate and perhaps conquer all of Australia and New Zealand, drive the USN solidly onto the West Coast and make the Russians think twice about even getting involved in this mess; all of your efforts will be compromised because of the gaminess of your initial move. I'm sure you wouldn't want that.

As it is, the game has only been out two years, and Japanese strategic thinking has only just begun to become more refined in it's offensives. It has yet to breach into the areas of subtlety and deception. You obviously have a mind for this type of game, I encourage you to use it. But first, raise the bar for yourself a bit. Gaminess just doesn't help us.

Now, 2ndACR is known as a good (Allied) player, timtom is a thoroughly courteous gentleman, and Terminus is frankly someone I watch and learn from. When he speaks thusly, I pay attention.

Once again, I encourage you to add to our growing skills and knowledge in the strategic and tactical arena as the Japanese player. In my mind, we have yet to really explore this area beyond a few classic opening moves and a few fairly commonsense game principles.

With respect and a fair degree of warmth,

Odox

I've read that while MSWs respawn DMs and DMSes don't respawn and his next substantial reinforcements are about 3 years away. If I can put a crimp in these forces now I might hurt his ability to retake my Central Pacific holdings more than destroying his carriers... I have therefore decided to stick around north of Pearl Harbour and risk his surface TFs in order to clean up on the DMSes and DMs.

Overall I'd have to say that the Allies seem to be abandoning most of the Phillipines and Malaysia in order to put up a fight at Clark Field/Manilla and Johore Bahru/Singapore respectively. hmm, I hadn't expected this. I've read a few AARs but haven't read about this sort of headlong retreat... Obviously it must be a well-known game gambit if it is being done this early and while I can see the advantage in terms of forcing me to attack a concentrated mass of enemy troops in the most fortified and favourable terrain possible I also think it has drawbacks for the Allies... It will certainly let me get within range of Singapore with my Army bombers and it is obvious now that I massively underestimated the ability of Singapore-based level bombers to interdict my supply runs. Pretty much everything which heads through the straits east of Singapore and Batavia seems to lose about 50% of its ships to level bomber attacks.

Hi Timtom,

Listen for snapping at you a bit.. I just hadn't realised that these openings moves would be *that* controversial... I figured my explanation of the house rules would cover things... So, sorry if I snapped back a bit.

Odox,

Thanks for the input. See the problem is that apart from the Soerabaja and western Borneo grabs I think it was pretty historically plausible. I think that small Japanese forces could have gotten into the Amboina/Kendari region, not perhaps unnoticed but certainly unattacked.

So I think the problem appears to be Soerabaja and the western areas of Borneo with, possibly, the addition of Port Moresby... Rabaul, Buna and Noumea and many of the Central Pacific Islands are just sitting there with no or minimal air patrols to warn of incoming Japanese invasion fleets so they are, IMO, fair game for surprise...

In my last game my opponent asked for no invasions west of Singapore on Turn 1 so this would have ruled out Soerabaja... What about Western borneo? In your opinion is it excessively gamey to invade that on turn 1?

As to my current game... I don't want to bail on my opponent especially as he seems ok with the opening moves... Hmm, maybe I will ask him if he wants a restart with more house rules for the DEI region on turn 1? If so what would people suggest... Like I said I can see that PM might be a bit questionable but in the rest of the central pacific I feel that a lack of allied air recon makes my invasions quite historically feasible.

Thanks for the feedback. Like I said, I'm happy to learn what the community considers gamey/not gamey. I might disagree on certain points but I'll at least be guided by the community consensus.

My surface forces attempt to cut off the fleeing enemy forces at Lautem. Results are inconclusive. There is a veritable stream of enemy shipping in the Kendari area. It is either attempting to hit Kendari or stream past it on its way to Northern Australia. I'm going to try to interdict this with CL/DD TFs and my Bettys. I will also consider bringing my BBs and CAs down if the Soerabaja falls.

I've decided I need to cut Singapore down a bit. I can't really hit it with my Bettys or Nells as I'm worried about my losses so I'm going to sweep him for a while and then hit him with Army bombers. If that can stop him flying from Singapore the biggest threat to my shipping in the DEI will be eliminated... My losses to his bombers are climbing and beginning to worry me.

I have been taking the forces which were committed to Kendari ( many NLFs) and have been "starbursting" them out to neighbouring bases. I'd like to take Timor as quickly as possible in order to bottle up the fleeing ships in the northern Australian ports with the threat of Betty and Nelly strikes... It would also force the forces in the DEI to retreat northwards to Singapore and Rangoon intead of southward. This will enable me to reduce their impact on my consolidation of the DEI and help me speed up my Phase 3 Operations.

Hi Timtom,

Listen for snapping at you a bit.. I just hadn't realised that these openings moves would be *that* controversial... I figured my explanation of the house rules would cover things... So, sorry if I snapped back a bit.

No apology called for. I can hardly expect you to take this lying down...[:)]

I wasn't implying, btw, that you're cheating. Your opponent brought his current pickle upon himself.

Have fun - it's the main thing.

Nikmod won't prevent what some consider "excessive" use of the Turn 1 bonus, but it makes the "Octopus strategy" far less viable.

How so, Nik? I'll admit I'm pretty ignorant about the mods (other than AB's which I'm currently using in my PBEMs). I don't want to restart so I try not to read too much about them. It'll drive me nuts. I am curious about this though.
