Upgrading Planes

Post by montesaurus »

I have an independant group of Zero AGM2's based at Osaka that I would like to upgrade to AGM3's. But when I click on the FTR group the option to upgrade them will not highlight to allow this action. Does anybody have any idea why this is so? It would be a shame to keep them in these planes as they are all 90's for experience. Thanks.

I have plenty of supplies. I'll have to check on the Air HQ, but I've had other fighter groups on my carriers upgrade without problem.

The "upgrade" button isn't highlighted so I'm unable to select it.
Any other ideas?

What scenario are you playing? Are you using P(layer) D(efined) U(pgrades)?

Some units in some scenarios are extremely limited as to their upgrade options.

I'm playing the Campaign game 42A, via email with a friend.
I will have to go back and check the options we have. Is that something I can still adjust at this point in the game?

As a reminder: in order to upgrade a unit, you must have enough planes to upgrade the entire (undamaged) unit, i.e.:

if you have a unit currently with (say) 8 planes, but the (undamaged) unit has 24 planes, then you would need 24 planes to upgrade, not 8.

Also, it is a good idea to leave a "buffer" capacity in the pool since if a unit is due to arrive and it is supposed to have (say) 24 A6M3, and you have 23 A6M3s in the pool, then the unit will NOT show up with A6M3s (but rather with something older like the A6M2)... You then have to wait to get the 24 planes in the pool, then upgrade using up all 24 planes in the pool (leaving you with 0 for the time).

IF on the other hand you have 24 planes in the pool (in this example) - the unit arrives with 24 A6M3s AND you retain all 24 planes in the pool!! [X(] [X(]

This weird little "feature" is quite annoying and doesn't make a lot of sense, but it is the way the game works.

For new arrivals that is. If its a returning disbanded unit (for the Japs anyways) it will still draw the planes from the pool. You DO get free pilots however (at around 45 experience).

Yamato, you are correct, that is the way it works for Japan for the returning disbanded/withdrawn units.  For the Allies, returning airgroups will not draw from the pool, but do require enough planes in the pool, or they return as a "downgraded" plane of some type.  For instance, I've seen a lot of returning Dutch groups come back as Dakota I's, since there are not enough fighers or bombers in the pool.

One thing I've noticed about this group of planes, is that they are "Independant", and do not have any stated limit to the numbers that can be in this unit. I also have a fleet headquarters, and plenty of supplies at the port they are at. I also believe I have sufficient planes in stock to fill the unit.

If the air unit is a "sub" unit of a larger unit (it will have a /1.../2...etc after the name). Then you can not upgrade the unit until it is completely reformed.
