Ground Attack numbers

Post by vettim89 »

After playing this game for over two years, I finally decided to ask about what these numbers mean during the ground attack segment. The attached image shows the surrounded Japanese units at Kota Bhura during my Big B 1.4 game that is now at 1 Feb 1945. As labled, the top image is what I see during the assault phase and the bottom what I see during the bombardment phase. What are these numers? AV? Squads? Something else?

Don't take this as a definitive answer, but I always viewed the fluctuating figures as being the Assault Value before adjustment, then as affected by combat in the various phases (bombardment followed by assault) and finally the adjusted value after combat.

For example, look at the values given to the Imperial Guards Div.  In the bombardment phase it is only 45, whereas for the assault phase it is 297.  To me this showed that its Ass Val for bombardment (determined only by its artillery tubes, as defined in the manual) was only 45, whereas for the assault phase, being an infantry division all its ready infantry squads etc are taken into account in determining the value.
