Another newbie question

Post by turkey »

Playing with the stock map - I have never worked out what the cryptic markings on the map mean, despite having played for some time.

These are the terrain codes that you see when you press hotkey 1

I have always assumed that the first letter refers to L=Land, C=Coastal, O=Ocean. Having said this, there are some hexes (such as 114,27 which is clearly inland but is identified as Cm what does this mean? BTW ships cannot sail to it. Is it a map error?

The second letter of the terrain codes Ok in so far as m=mountain, c=clear (or cultivated), u=urban, w=woodland (or jungle), d=desert.

Also that Oa = deep water and Ow = shallow water.

Where I start to get confused is the following questions and would welcome guidance from more experienced / knowledgeable players.

1. Ca (when it’s part of a land mass like 56,92 immediately NW of Goodenough) = perhaps it's coastal, with deep water immediately offshore? If this is the case, then what are the combat modifiers for deep water? Is it considered like an atoll?

2. Single hex islands marked Cm, Cow or Cc - (like Karenina at 57,93) I guess these are larger islands and therefore not atolls as far as game play and assaults go?

3. Ca when there is an island in the hex (like Tarawa) must be an atoll?

4. Oa when there is an island shown on the map in an ocean hex - like 55,85 due east of Saidor) is this in fact deep water and the island is only a figment of the map artist's creativity? So no mining and no landings?

Thanks in advance.

Thought so - but the islands where there is a beach hex that are listed as Cm, Cw or Cc are these still considered as atolls for assault perpose ion whcih case its an error of the map, or are they in fact flat easy to assualt islands, so no atoll assualt rules?

dunno if its cleared or not.

but every base a definition of all the functions it has (such as atoll)

botom left of the base specification screen when the base is selected. I'd say if they count as an atol its stated there
(other stuff like malaria, coastwatchers etc is also stated there)

Hi flaggelant. Its not cleared yet: I'm still not clear on single hex islands marked Cm, Cw or Cc - (like Karenina at 57,93) are these atolls as far as game play and assaults go? or are they larger islands and therefore not subject to the special atoll assault rules?

Cheers! turkey.
