What happened? VPs and surrender.

Post by cpdeyoung »

In the game Reprise I thought I had really made a smooth move when I captured Copenhagen with the French. I now see France has surrendered, and I wonder that Gary had time to reduce Copenhagen. Perhaps he could comment if he took Marselles and Copenhagen on the same turn, or if I was wrong that French possesion of the VP city of Copenhagen would allow them to survive.

If you took Copenhagen, Gary, then all is well. Otherwise I do not understand why France fell.

Well, when my turn started as Germany, France had fallen, thereby returning Copenhagen to Germany. The French unit that was in the city disappeared. I had a parachute unit ready to drop in to keep you from dropping in. So apparently the Copenhagen VP didn't ensure the survival of France.

I was pretty sure that possession of a VP city, even if not in your own country would prevent surrender. There were four units in Denmark, so you would have had a tougher time than you thought. This bothers me, because it seems to contradict a rule I thought I understood. Why did Germany not surrender in SuD when you captured all VPs in Germany?

Could you comment, doomtrader?

I don't remember where it was in the manual, but AFAIK, if you don't have at least one owned city with VP you lost (or maybe it was even national city).

Aha, the word "owned" is the ticket! When Germany conquered Denmark it took "ownership", when France took "control" it did not get ownership.

Thus are "smooth moves" lost on the fine points! Won't make that mistake again.

Thanks,
