air strike effectivity

Post by gwgardner »

Does range play a factor in 'air strike effectivity?'

I have a full strength air army, level 2, striking a Yugoslav division in a city hex, and air strike effectivity is 37%.

It is approx 12 hexes away from the target.

How can I get that 'effectivity' rating up, besides research. I mean, what can I do tactically.

I checked the manual, and it appears it should not, but in reality it is a huge factor, so it may be in the model, and not accurately described. Sortie time varies with range, and sorties are the major factor in air productivity, as I understand it.

When I get a chance I will try a test at different ranges and see if I can quantify it.

I just did tests with both the German and Italian air forces, changing ranges to the target hex.  No change at all on 'effectivity.'  So range is apparently not a factor.

Thanks for doing the tests!  I guess I must remember that Air unts of this size would represent multiple squadrons at multiple airbases, and that the relative position of the counter would not necessarily represent tactical and operational sortie rates.  I guess we need to convince the developers to increase the granularity till we get to SPI's "War in the East" so we can run this by ourselves.

I have an anecdote about "War in the East".  I once belonged to a gaming club which met at a college.  We would come in on Sunday afternoon and play a variety of board games.  Six fellows were "WitE" fans and they would come in with hundreds of baggies full of counters.  Set up the situation from last week, play a turn, and rebag all the counters, carefully noting map positions.  World War Two, perhaps in real time.

Now that's dedication.  I had my WitE setup on a ping pong table for a couple of years.

Yeah, we had a DNO/Unentschieden game going in real time (weekly turns) at the UT Wargamers Society from 1973 - 1975. Truly awesome, much better than War in the East. (Interesting trivia: Frank Chadwick designed the game scale so the map would fit, barely, on a ping-pong table.) We started off with each player acting as an army group or Soviet "front" commander, but as people dropped out we ended up assigning a command from the opposite side (and hopefully oposite end of the front!) Contributed mightly to my dropping out of school.
In a related vein, we had a massive game going at about the same time of Borodino (cant remember now what it was called!) Another table filler, but we were using a house rule where no one could speak to anyone else except rules questions in the presence of the umpire and the enemy commander. All comunication was by written messages, delivered by aides moving on the map as aide'de camp counters. Played in real time (twenty minutes/side for movement) combat phases and housekeeping taking place "off the clock." Fought to a conclusion over a three day holiday. [X(] Unquestionably the most interesting and REALISTIC gameing experience of my life. Ended as a quivering, shattered mess after 72 hours of frustration, shock and WAY too much coffee.
We also at one time played Jutland at real 1:1 scale on the floor of Memorial Stadium with the coast of England laid out with newspaper.
BTW guys, thanks for your support on the airforce/naval interaction difficulty. I'll respond to Erik when I can do so without shouting.

Don't know that I would go so far as to say that the Europa system was/is better than the SPI War in Europe.  I played the latter extensively, and the former only a bit, so I can't judge fairly.  All I know is that War in Europe was a blast to play.

I guess as an old hand, you would have this link already:  http://www.decisiongames.com/wwii/europe/europe.htm

I've just dabbled with the demo so far.  Would love to get the game eventually and play it PBEM.

I had "War in Europe" set up on some wonderful tables I once owned, for months, of course.  That map, and all those beautiful counters was a joy to behold.  Looking through my notes I find 35 pages of notes from a game of "War in the West" I set up February 9th, 1978, over thirty years ago, and played till March 23rd, 1978, solo.  I loved that system, and the production cycle still seems the "right" way to build units. Ah, Redmond Simonsen, the joy of my youth.

Developer or support, please respond to the original entry in this thread, as it is important for understanding how properly to use the air units.

Please refer to second part of my question, as quoted here.
