Yesterday I sat down with my13yo son and introduced him to TOW. For a 13yo he has played quite a few computer and board games. I have 100+ board wargames and he has played someofthe simpler ones with me. He also has played Civ,AoE, MiH, Stronghold and different computer strategy gamesof the same ilk. He hasn't played much of the traditional hexand counter games though, so TOW was gonna be a little different for him.

He wanted to be Germany (of course). I sat down with him and showed him how the game operates, how to do different unit actions, how the interface works, etc. I then let him have the steering wheel so to speak, to drive over Poland. I left him alone with the game initially, popped backinwhen he called me to explain things he didn't understand. Using my lap top, I showed him my solo game I have been playing for awhile. PLaying as Germany in March 43. Let him compare the mini-maps showing control. He wanted to know how my units where so strong, so we compared research levels. It helped him understand how research works.

Over Christmas break we are going to play a hotseat game. I have a 15yo son also, but he is too cool now to play games with his dad...lol. Hope this encourages those of you with children to pass the love of wargames down. Once we start our game I'll post some updates on the AAR section.

Congratulations. You've done better than I ever did. My son went straight from nintendo to Diablo to World of Warcraft, and never looked back. Couldn't get him to play a wargame for anything.

My sons and I both dabbled in Diablo and then WOW for awhile. The addiction quotient is too high on WOW and I had to cancel the sub. Took a little while for them to overcome it. They then realized how much of a time sink WOW really was, and they are glad they aren't playing it now. I must admit ultimate goal is to get them playing the board war games more frequently. Had some friends over awhile back to play some Adv. 3rd Reich and that seemed to grab my 13yo's attention. TOW is a natural bridge for him to eventually be able to play a gamelike A3R.

BTW My 5 year old daughter already wants  to make games with me, I wonder whether she will say the same in a few years...

That's fantastic, TexHorns. Hell, that's where my love of strategy gaming came from...playing against my dad. [:)]

I've been trying to show to my son the beauty of wargaming, but he much prefers Team Fotress and such games

I play Battlefield and COD series with my boys.. 10 and 13.. we also dabble in Company of Heroes and other RTS games.. Good way to bond with your kids.. my co-workers and their kids play with us too.. and now the kids play a lot together on their own.. They get to know them online. then get excited for the 'real life' get togethers later on..

Unfortunately I am very poor at the eye-hand, quick trigger games. I have played COD with them also, but I'm pretty bad at it. Much prefer the "pace" of computer turn based games and board games. My nephew is a recent veteran of Iraq. He was rifleman in an armored division. Rode in the Bradely FV. My son's play Modern Warfare 2 with him on x-box 360, online. They have a good time. My son's say I'd kill their "rating" if I played...LOL.

Probably shouldn't say this, but my youngest son, 5 years old, are playing CoD Modern Warfare as if nothing else exists. Hopefully he may have grown into Time of Wrath, or, more likely, something similar in 7-8 years of time. [:)]

Company of Heroes and the extension "Opposing fronts" is one of the best games I ever played. My group of friends did play many matches online from 2006 to now, we are still playing sometimes. Sorry maybe this forum is not the place to talk about this. [:'(]
