Ardennes Revisited...By MR

Post by Mad Russian »

Still playing the game and looking to tweak my game play.

I picked the Germans in what looked like attack mode. I wanted to see the Leo 2 in it's full glory.

This scenario shows it.

Good Hunting.

I'm also looking to see how the AI plays/operates. If I'm to make a scenario or two for this game at some point I need to be able to play it as well as possible.

When I engage human players they normally don't play any differently than the AI. They often run to the sound of gunfire. What a human player does differently normally happens after they get there.

With that in mind I normally do a two phase attack when on the offensive. I delay one of the phases until after the first phase is well under way.

This does one of two things:

1) It gets the defender to hold back his reserves while the first assaulting phase is in progress. Good for me.

2) It has him rush his reserves into battle early. Good for me.

Here you can see where my attacking units are positioned and that my initial assault units have bypassed and destroyed much of the Soviet formation in the area.

Good Hunting.

In open combat the Germans have taken the Soviet forces apart.

This is how the Victory Conditions stand at the end of turn 3.

Notice too that NATO order delay times are longer than Soviet delay times.

Leopard 2's leading the attack where they hit the Soviet battle formations, pinned them and then went wide to the right around them took a heavy toll on the Soviet battle formations.

Here you can see how the distribution of forces on the map fits my battle plan.

As our forces move across the terrain you can see how the sectors are either empty as in the north or have Soviet units in them as in the center and southern sectors.

The left hand numbers in the blue and red data strings are the number of vehicles in that sector. It only shows the number of Soviet vehicles that are identified by German forces in each sector.

For example; Sector 2 shows 16 German vehicles and 0 Soviet vehicles. Sector 7 shows 12 German vehicles and 4 identified Soviet vehicles in the sector.

My second phase attacking force in the north has met no Soviet units of any kind. They are simply driving across the map to take their objective. This group alone will win the scenario with the heavy point total in Sector 4.

The Soviet thrust towards Sector 6 has been completely destroyed.

Good Hunting.

During this next turn I end with having no enemy units in contact with me anywhere on the map.

All that was left of the Soviet forces were up in the 4th Sector with 2 vehicles in the 8th Sector.

Not much left.

In fact, we had hit them so hard the game ended on turn 7 out of a possible 24. That's pretty dominant game play.

The Soviets took almost 9:1 losses in this battle.

I'm sure that couldn't be repeated vs a human player.

Again, I'm surprised that the Warsaw Pact has a lower delay time than my own troops. Maybe this is because they have no units moving?

In any case it was fun to play with the freewheeling German Panzers one more time.

Good Hunting.
