Anyone remember a WWII Harpoon type game?

Post by diesel7013 »

When I was younger - I remember reading a review of a WWII game that was either based upon or played very similar to Harpoon - Does anyone else remember it? The reviews were pretty average and I didn't buy it as I was too busy spending money on chasing girls and drinking beer ( miss those days [:(] )

I've always thought that would be a great way to play tactical / operations carrier and surface battles like Carriers at War, or the SSI Carrier Strike, ect...

Thanks!

Clash of Steel was a strategic game a bit like 3rd Reich and World in Flames, IIRC

Great Naval Battles series by SSI. I still play numbers 2 and 5 in the series. I think these are "abandonware" now.

You can always play Harpoon 3 with the WW2 database. Info, database & scenarios are available at the HarpoonHQ, here: http://www.harpoonhq.com/harpoon3/scenarios_wwii/

You can also join the WW2DB Yahoo-group, here:

I'd be wary of that. I've tried a number of WWII test scens and the Visual Sighting bug is just a killer.

You get to spot things clearly at 30nm+. This bug is expected to be squashed for ANW, but, as it currently resides in Harpoon 3, it makes it very difficult to try WWII actions, IMO.

This DB will be one of many that will be featured for Harpoon III ANW.

Will these DBs be included in the final release of the game or only used to show it off at Origins?

There is another problem in gunnery that has not yet been solved. The game does not pay respect to the gunnery / weapons arcs.

Therefore, when you approach another vessel to exchange salvos, both ships are able to fire EVERY SINGLE gun on each ship. So, there is no possiblilty for manoeuvres like 'Crossing-The-T' because every gun fires in every direction.

Do you mean Action Stations?

The visual sighting bug has been fixed for ANW. Tom's DB works great with the fix. In fact Tom has spent quite a bit of effort in modelling gunnery. We had a lengthy and productive correspondance with him several months ago regarding his database and he has graciously given me the permission to take it to the Origins convention to show it off.

For those of you intrested in taking a look at this database, you can find it in it's very own section of the Harpoon HQ HERE.

This DB will be one of many that will be featured for Harpoon III ANW.
I guess I'll be making a ANW purchase after all.

No, it was a 360 / Pacific game based in WWII.  It was buggy as hell from all the reviews I read on it and was never out in widespread publication.  I once thought about purching it mail order - but then there was this girl, and some beer, and well - you know... [;)]

I think Harpoon would make a great engine for a tactical, low level operational game of carrier conflict...

PS - to moderator - the discussion about the WWII DB and how it works with Harpoon III is sort of on topic as it discusses how well Harpoon III can operate "as is" as a WWII era game. So - thanks to all for the input - guess no one remembers that game I was talking about...

Wait! Tell us more about the beer! [;)]

Even though the gunnery model is not commensurate with WWII surface actions, the aerial combat is interesting. I tried a Midway scenario that was made with another H3 WW2 Db by Mike Deegan.

It was fun and enjoyable, but some of the game parameters enforced were a bit strange. For example, the minimum range for guns is 1.0nm while all bombs released at 2.0nm so you were able to engage in Air-to-Air combat manoeuvres at somewhat long range and basically bomb with relative impunity. That's still evident, but it's minor.

Hopefully, we will get some more to try.
