Training - Does it Work?

Hired Guns: The Jagged Edge is a turn-based strategy that puts you command of a squad of specialists for hire in the genre’s biggest game-world yet: the African country Diamond Coast. Diamond Coast is a playground for the cruel and corrupt, each with their own agenda. Choose your friends wisely and buy an army of ruthless mercenaries to unleash mayhem on your foes. Choose “jobs” from different factions and complete them for cash to upgrade your weapons and hire more elite soldiers of fortune.

Training - Does it Work?

How does the teacher/student training work? So far I can't seem to get it to work -- I hired a merc, set up in the North Road, and set one teacher and one student -- several days later, no effect on statistics whatsoever.

I have not seen any results either. I think this is yet another thing that's broken in the game. With all the bugs this game seems to have I must wonder if it was beta-tested before being released ...

I haven't encountered this problem at all. Does the student ever make a comment in the strategic mode about improving or getting better? Also does the teacher have higher skill ratings than the student in any field?

No on comments, and yes on higher skills.

Actually, I noticed the trainer and student making comments. The comments said weren't particularly meaningful however (which is why people may not have noticed that these comments were connected to the training).

I did a test where I stayed at the first area on the first day (so nothing else would be going on so I knew what happened was the result of the training) and had Venom training two of the weaker mercs (their names escape me ATM) and Venom would say "Hop!" or some other meaningless gibberish when her leadership increased by a point. One of the student's said something like "Feel's so good!" (lol wut) and I when I checked him, his accuracy increased (by a point or two).

edit: sometimes the trainer's and students do say things that are more meaningful, for instance, I had one time when the trainer said (paraphrasing here)"I feel like I just got an A in school!" when her leadership increased.

Bingo! That means you're training. It is a gradual process, however, so you can't expect leaps and bounds right away. Mercs that have a really high rating (80+) in something can generally train other people pretty quick. My advice to increase training effectiveness is to hire guys that specialize really intensely in something and then have them train your guys for a few days - this works better than training off of a guy who is only so-so at a bunch of stuff.

the trouble is, everything in the game is set to be long term, but since you have to spend money to make money, and you have to take (most times) at least one sector a day (two to be able to buy supplies) you don't really have time to sit around and train or any of alot of the other kewl things you can do in the game

(I got 2 teams running, so cost is around 27,000 a day, I getting around 14,500 from my lands, my weapons/supplies are around 5-10,000 a day so far (that will drop, as I will be only needing ammo for a while now)

plus, most battles, you need to heal your boys, so not much training going on, with everybody on either heal or Doc

MAYBE, for the little pop up speeches, you could add in what it means ? "almost a chief now" (+1 to Acc) "you gonna have to pay me more" (+1 to Level) which it should just be in the comment files, no need for Voice (since I see the comments don't always match what is being said)

I decided to try and train my mercs and heal them up but after 2 days of sitting around every one of my mercs quit on me.

I can also confirm training works .... but it is sporadic and slow.  Since as HS says you are a patient, travelling, or repairing so often though, you are hard pressed to find time to do it.  I don't know how long the campaign lasts or anything but the rate of progress so far does seem pretty insignificant.  If nothing else though, I guess it gives them something to do while not lying in the hospital bed!

only hassle is, if they not lying around, they got better things to be doing then training, like killing bad guys (or is that good guys ?)

It got started working for me later on in the game, oddly enough.

Is -very- slow though except for those with very poor stats, when the stats get high enough there is apparently no effect or next to none. I tried to use Bizon for examine to teach strength training -- absolutely no effect, even for the weak, oddly enough. Training actually does more for the teacher with poor leadership than any of the students!!!

I finally had one of my mercs advance a skill via training. It is indeed a very slow process.

Tried training too and it works, but it's way to slow to be useful...
On my gameplay style I usually do 3 or 4 sectors each day, so thats useless to me, but there might be people that prefer to take longer breaks after each fight and in those cases it might be worthy.

Training works fine if you have the right teacher. My created merc had 85 in leadership and using him as a trainer made the skills of my other mercs shoot up so fast it was annoying hearing them talk all the time. It would have been great being able to choose which skill to train though because mostly I was getting a lot of useless mechanical and medicine skill ups. I've rarely seen a major stat like agility or accuracy increase, but it happens.

1)I have a question my created merc doesn't seem to learn anything when i have venom or any other mercs hired to train him with him selected as the student even after a period of 1 month?

2)Does the trainer teaches mental abilities or physical parameters to the students?

3)Can the trainer also teach specialisations and expertise too to their students?

[ol][*]Your custom merc cannot be trained in any areas that he or she already has at level 85+, and as the skill gets higher it is harder and harder to improve. Which is why you may not be seeing any improvements.[*]Both.[*]No.

I'm pretty sure that you cannot improve skills at zero via training.
