Minefields Tips and Hints

Post by Juramentado »

Folks - I searched for keywords mine (bombed - too generic, search engine hiccuped on that one 'natch [:)]), mines and minefield. No dice on the exact how-to. I found the mine entries under INTL in subs. Now, my question is - do I create a group and then use the Formation editor to lay it out? This seems to be the best approach, but I wonder if there's something else I can try? Is there a practical upper limit to the group population (impacts field density)?

Yep, that's how you do it, using the Formation Editor, no different than if you were creating formations of ships and submarines. (For all intents and purposes, mines are effectively submarines as far as the code is concerned).

I would recommend using multiple groups, each comprising less than 20, and you can play with the formation size to adjust field density. Trial and error will quickly show you the resulting formation will look on the map.

One thing to keep in mind about mines, since they are typically laid near coastlines: make sure the water depth is appropriate for the units in your formation (you may need to adjust the layout of the formation to conform with a coastline, for example).

another note, absolute maximum number of units per group is 100.

Thank you gents. I should have asked this earlier, but what are the mechanics behind minesweeping in this iteration of the game please? Is it as simple as sending an MCM or a ship equipped with MIW gear?

Mines are simulated by 'little submarines'.  That means that weapons that work against subs will work against the mines, too.

Specific MCM vessels are fitted with anti-sub/mine gear that is fired to destroy the mines.  Other vessels can fire torpedoes like Mk 46 against mines even though they probably wouldn't do it in real life.
