Crash bug, No ship movement, Autosave

Post by Tobias Smith »

I've experienced the totally random crash bug discussed on this board by many. It is only occasional, 4 times in 2 games. My last crash bug actually had an error message:

Runtime Error!
Program:...trix Games\Starships Unlimited Divided Galaxies\SUDG.exe
R6025
pure virtual function call

Only received this message once, all others were CTD with no message and couldn't be recreated from a save.

The no ship movement on attack missions bug is bothering me most. Can't afford to have ships endlessly sitting at planets and shouldn't have to coax them with tricks to get them to attack.

Suggest you change the autosave feature to save more often if you can't fix crash bug.

I read the link that said no one is currently working on a patch. I just paid forty dollars for this game at EB. If it isn't going to be supported can I get my money back? It seems what has already been completed in 2.1 would solve alot of my problems. I also think it's kind of false advertising to say there is going to be a version 3.0 with all these new features and then go start working on a different game .

Some help

Post by EricLarsen »

Tobias,
The problem of your ships not moving when set to an attack mission isn't really a bug. Chances are your ship captain wants to upgrade his ship and he's planning on doing just that before he does your attack order. I've seen cases where my whole fleet of ships would head in the opposite direction to some other friendly base instead of attacking the planet I designated. To solve this little conundrum when you plan your planet attack mission make sure to set repair to "Ignoring captian's upgrade requests". Chances are they'll now make like a bat out of hades to head out on their attack mission.

I tried to get the autosave feature to be more frequent and reliable but Andrew isn't going to fix it. I save very regularly myself to ensure something good doesn't get lost by a crash.

I agree wholeheartedly that Andrew has done us a disservice by giving us a big tease about the patch 2.1 status over a month ago and then he goes and starts some new project rather than finishing up this project we've already paid him for and which should be his focus to finish first. Personally I'm not interested in his new little ship game so as far as I'm concerned he's wasting his time. I also wouldn't hold my breath on a 3.0 SUDG considering how lax he has become at finishing 2.1.

As far as the stuck ships, this is a bug. A bug Andrew said he had fixed with what he had already done in 2.1, I believe the last feature he mentioned in his 2.1 status post on this board. Anyway I am having the problem with stuck ships even after they leave the shipyard and are awaiting orders.

Tobias,
I guess I've been lucky so far in not having my ships get stuck like that. I'd tend to restore and try to get them moving anyway or just cancel the orders, refit asll ships, and then they'd go attack planets. Sure is a bummer that we've got to wait so long for the 2.1 patch, but it gives me time to play Campaigns of LaGrande Armee 1805/1809. Hopefully we'll see patch 2.1 sometime before I die and then we can go back to SUDG and see how the improvements pan out.

I've given the lastest patch, v2.1, to some beta testers a few days ago. Should be available soon. Thanks for your support.

Andrew,

Don't let some people's impatience get to you. I think most of us realize that, after working on one thing for a long time, you'd enjoy some time away from it, focusing on something else. And, besides, when you take a break, it often lets you see things you couldn't see before. So, as eager as I am to get the new patch, I'm willing to wait a little.

Hrothgar,

The PC video game industry is in a sorry state when it's customers have grown accustomed to waiting indefinitely for a finished product. Let's be fair here. Andrew posted in February the progress of the 2.1 patch. What he said he had already completed was the answer to many peoples problems with the game. In March EricLarsen asked where is this patch. Andrew responded that he had stopped work on it and was working on another game.

I just purchased what I thought was a mature product. I found it had some bugs that were ruining my enjoyment of the game and I said so. I asked if the game was going to be supported or not. I didn't do this in a rude way. Andrew was kind enough to respond quickly and in a way that has satisfied my questions.

This industry is such that it is very unwise to buy a new product now withhout waiting six months or more after initial release. People like you who say, "Here, take my money and give me the finished product whenever you get around to it," are encouraging companies to shove products out the door before they are ready. Fortunately in this case, the patch is not long in coming. But this is sadly becoming the exception to the rule.

Sad, but true... MOO3 being one of the best examples of a product released way before it was ready. I agree that from now on, I am going to wait 6 months after a product initial release and during that time I'll peruse the discussion forums to glean enough information as to whether or not the product is finally complete or not. Also, an added advantage to that approach is that you can usually save some $$$ when it has been out for a while.
You've GOT to hold them back!
