Player Models

Post by Old Coach »

Note the players circled below. The RLB has a lineman's player model and the RT has an LB player model. I'm sure all of you see the same thing. David explained how the models are assigned on the defense, but I don't recall (and probably didn't understand) how it worked. It is an issue that I wish had been addressed. It doesn't affect game play but does look funny. I've always said that the linemen's bellys were over exaggerated. I would have liked to seen the DT's slimmed down a bit and have the DE's assigned a player model somewhat between that of the LB and the DL. Also, it would have been great to be able to assign stances to defensive players just as on the offense. In some schemes the DE's are in an upright stance. In the orignal PDS for version 1.0 you could assign any stance to any player. I wish that hadn't of been taken out of version 2.0.

In my previous post I had a screenshot from 1964 Alabama vs Vanderbilt. The Tide ripped the Commodes (Commodores/Commode Doors) 41-7.
Here's picture set 1. I'm using a modified Rozelle Stadium model.

The QB for Alabama, #12, is Joe Willie Namath. Perhaps you've heard of him. I actually saw him play against Mississippi State when he was a senior in 1964. Namath was a freak of nature. He could flat throw that football.

I'd have to agree

seeing linebackers and the odd Defensive back that look like they weigh in excess of 300 lb's is really strange to see
and even stranger to see a defensive lineman who looks like he's lived on nothing but carrot juice for the last six months

I'd agree with belly size too, way to large even for the average lineman

Really Really odd indeed

Basically, the game engine loads the models in, and because that is not always in synch with the depth chart swaps, some of the models get misplaced.

As you know, at the time I asked about using three models, as had been talked about on the old Wintervalley board, but because the player objects actually use many more faces than some other 3D games, having to load more models would use up too much memory.

Because the depth chart is something like, DE DE DT DT and swaps out the DT for a linebacker in a 34, I suggested using a fat model for just the third player.  That would be a Pat Williams type player.  At one time, I also suggested going back to the old bigger, but not fatter, model for the first three linemen.

It doesn't affect game play but does look funny. I've always said that the linemen's bellys were over exaggerated. I would have liked to seen the DT's slimmed down a bit and have the DE's assigned a player model somewhat between that of the LB and the DL.

I agree, and posted such in the beta forum.

I agree.  I listed that as a bug, and David stated it was a change rather than a bug.  There was a similar problem with tight ends on offense not keeping the stance assigned in the formation as the default.

There's a great story about Joe in the Showtime documentary Full Color Football. One day he was spotted on the practice field skipping passes to Maynard. That is, he was deliberately throwing balls into the dirt about 15 yards from Maynard, then they would come up and hit Maynard between the numbers in a perfect spiral. Namath was "Broadway Joe", but he had as much pure talent as any QB that ever played.

There is an awesome pic of Namath, where he is probably 3ft or more off the ground, getting ready to pass. Just amazing.

The best pass Namath ever threw was to the great Bobby Brady.

I remember that one well, because Brady had to go up and get it just a bit.
