I like to use Read with the free safety and a linebacker or two.  Sometimes they are slow to react though, so one must test the plays.

Marauders,

Would the speed of the reaction time be influenced by the INT rating?

INT plays a roll, especially on passing plays. The time the defender takes to react to the ball being thrown is effected by his intelligence.

Against the run, the biggest factor is the players agility. Linebackers will read run first and DB's will react to the pass first.

That is good information to know.

It is always a good reminder that no defense will cover everything, so one should look at what a play is to do (provide pressure, cover receivers, attack the run), and then use a safety or linebacker to cover one's butt in case one guesses wrong.

Linebackers with Read logic are generally better at reacting to inside run plays, so it would be wise to cover up on the edges behind them.  Read logic is sort of a Jack of all trades tool between pass defense and run defense; it isn't as good as either, but it can recover better against another type of play.

[READ] does not replace [COVER][ZONE]. [READ] will watch what is happening in the backfield and react to that. If a DB is in zone, and is not currently covering an offensive player, he will 'keep and eye' on what is going on in the backfield but it's not his primary roll. He will always be more preoccupied with players coming into his zone.
