Nfl player file

Post by elmerlee »

I've made comma seperated files for all the NFL teams with players and converted Madden ratings (my formula).

I thought I saw on the forum how to get this info into Max but I just cannot find what I'm looking for. Anyone able to help with this?

Thanks...........

Hey Elmerlee,

I posted a brief rundown on how I imported some madden info into MaxFB using a csv file and JD's roster editor on this thread:

tm.asp?m=1700613

If you run into any snags with the editor, just post any probs to the thread for the db editor and JD can probably help you out.

Thanks for the info quixian.

I have not gotten into the DB editor as when I tried to install 1.7 I got an error message. JD said to use 1.6 until he finished an update to 1.7. Looks like that may be awhile since he seems to have become more involved in Madden. Will 1.6 woek OK for this?

By the way I've enjoyed working with your rosters for Max.

Not a problem, I'm happy to share the info I've found.  Maybe others have found a better way to transfer the roster information around, but what I've done has worked for me at any rate.

Yes, I would say that JD's editor version 1.6.2 works fine for any importing and exporting of roster data.  That's the version I used for all of my work on the Madden edits I did previously.

Post #8 on the following thread by David gives a link to the VB5 runtimes, which should allow you to run 1.6.2 if you get any error messages about an .OCX file being unregistered:

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1738659

One more thing - if your rosters contain any commas in a field itself (ie, if for College you have listed something like "Miami, FL" or "Pittsburg, KS"), it will glitch the roster when you import it.  I opened the roster file I was importing in Excel and did a "find and replace" to remove all the instances of a comma showing up in a field.  After that, the csv file was able to be imported properly.

Quixian - thanks again for your interest.

Editor 1.6 still does not work for me. Same problem.

I went to the thread you listed and read all the posts. Although they seem all Vista related I believe a post by David does indicate it should function for XP also.

Here is what worries me about installing this. I have a number of programs I have written in VB4 and would not want VB5 installs to mess me up. Probably would not
and if anyone knows about this I would appreciate their input.

Also, in another post someone mentioned their using Action PC Football. This relates to my concern in that a couple years ago after I installed Action some other VB programs I have were really a mess. Just got me concerned.

I tried to manually install "maxfbtranspicture.ocx" by running "regsvr32" and no matter what directory I use the "file not found error" occurs.

The maxfbtranspicture file shows on the computer with 50kb so what is the deal?
We may or may not be getting this new version of the editor but maybe I need to go to some other method.

There must be a way for me to get a csv file to save as a data base file that MaxFB will recognize using Open Office.
I just am not too great with data base files.

Any help.

Hey elmerlee - I'm not an expert with databases myself, but will take a look when I get home to see if I can figure out how to get the editor to recognize the .ocx file you mentioned, or perhaps see if I can suggest anything for working with Open Office and the .mdb files.  From what I recall, Open Office will require that changes to a db be saved in their proprietary format, so I'm not sure if that will screw up the data or not.  There aren't as many MS-independent programs today that are compatible with Access 97 as there once were, unfortunately, so it can be a pain to find something that won't change the format to Access 2k or XP when you try to save the db.

An older program that I've used from time to time to move stuff around .mdb files is dbcommander, it's available for free online (30 day trial shareware).  That may help also, if you hit a dead end.

If I can find out anything useful, I'll pass the word along this evening.  Maybe if JD pops into the forum he can assist you as well.  You may want to copy your earlier post from this thread to the exclusive thread for the db editor to see if he'll reply.

"failed" error code 0x8000FFFF is my latest lack of progress.

Guess the .OCX is being found. Maybe it is a license problem. Who the H knows.

Getting to be more trouble than it is worth.

One "quick" possible solution - uninstall the editor, then follow the steps below:

1. On the following thread: tm.asp?m=1698570, post #46, JD posts a link to windows installer. Use that link to download and install the latest version of the installer. Once installed, skip steps 2 and 3 unless you still get errors after going thru steps 4 and 5 below.

2. Second, in the event you are running windows 95-98-me-nt, you should install the latest MDAC drivers: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

3. In the event you are running Windows XP, but not SP2 or SP3, you should go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q239114/ and download the updated Jet drivers on that page for Windows XP.

4. Then, install editor v1.6.2

5. Finally, on post #22 of the thread referenced above, I posted a copy of the .ocx file that initially comes up missing when you first start up the editor. Download that file, rename to .zip, extract the .ocx file from within the archive, and move the .ocx file directly to the directory where the editor is installed.

Not sure what you've tried already, but the first couple of things I found in searching on that error message is that it will come up when some .dll and .ocx files are registered in different directories. So, re-installing the program after updating the window installer could be the answer. [&:]

I'll keep messing around with it this weekend and maybe in the meantime the proposed fix above will work...

quixian - when you reference post 22 is that not refering to a grid.ocx rather than the transpicture.ocx with which I am having trouble ?

As for your other thoughts I've covered them going in.

Thanks so much for your help.

If you go to the Utilities section on fbmax.com, you'll find a set of instructions I wrote up that allow you to use Open Office to access and edit MF database files.

Hey elmerlee, I kinda figured you'd already tried all those suggestions - those of us old timers that have used the old VB4 programs to edit games "back in the day" definitely have gone down this kind of road and back again in trying to get utilities working...

Glad that MjH posted that about OO, as I'm none too familiar with OO myself, unfortunately.

I suggested copying that .ocx file to the db editor install folder only b/c of my own experience with trying to use 1.6.2 and always getting an error that the .ocx file in question was missing unless it was in the install directory.  Figured that it might help, just in case.  Good luck!
