USFL returning in 2010??

Post by scottGreene »

According to this Wikipedia article, the USFL, or a USFL, will start play in spring 2010...

Hey Scott!

This is a weird one. I've been following this off and on for a while now. I honestly felt for a bit that this was just some dude running some kind of fantasy league thing. The websites always looked a bit hokey. But, I have seen an article or two that seem to indicate he is for real.

I always felt the USFL was a league that would have succeeded, had it been run better. But these leagues lately seem to shoot themselves in the face before they even start. The UFL is now at 4 teams and 6 week season. Our Orlando team is playing one of its 3 home games at Tampa. Blah!
If you cant at least field 8 teams, I would say forget it. Start when you have 8 to 12 strong ownership groups in place. Even a football fanatic like me isnt going to be too interested in a 4 team league.

Sometimes I think these startups are an ego thing for people with money. It's a chance to say you 'own' a pro football team, if even for 1 season. Keep one of the helmets to put up on a shelf in you office.

First I'd seen about it. Apparently I need to pay more attention as it seems they started talking about it sometime last year : )

Agreed. If the original USFL had actually stuck to the plan laid out by Dixon and not (at least in the beginning) tried to compete with the NFL, they might've fared a lot better. Oh- and Trump and Einhorn pushing for the move to the fall probably didnt help either. Look how many teams collapsed or moved because of it (Breakers, Panthers, Stars, Maulers, and so on). If you get a chance, read the book "The $1 League". It really gives you an inside look at just how screwed up the ownership was in the USFL (with the exception of a couple of guys..like Bassett, owner of the Bandits)

And agreed again. At least 10-12 teams. 4 teams is not really a league in my opinion.

Yep. And it seems to happen every 10 years or so (USFL 2010, XFL 2000, WLAF 1990, USFL 1980s, WFL 1970s, AFL 1960s, etc). I thought maybe the XFL actually had a shot at succeeding too...at least at first. Then the more it started changing its rules mid-season and the more sensationalism it incorporated (thanks to McMahon and his WWE background I guess), I figured it was only a matter of time before it failed.
