Shaun, Get Off The Golf Course!

Post by KG Erwin »

You said you didn't have time to develop Pure-Sim further, but yet you go play golf. What's the deal here? Your fans over here have been waiting on you patiently, and meanwhile enjoying the latest CE. Damn, I'm starting to feel like a jilted lover.

As a fellow gamer said, you had PS SO close to being perfect, but you basically abandoned it. We need you, Shaun.

Who's with me on this?

I am with you. I appreciate Shaun taking time for his family and it is great if he comes back to PS like he has alluded to. But, wish he would get as ramped up about baseball as golf;)

KG:

I am with you on this one!! Golf.........a game for the rich. I have looked at the demo and it is a nicely done sim but I just don't have enough interest in golf to fork over the $$$. Like you I am hoping we can get Shaun back fired up about "His" game and a game that is soooooooooo close to being the best baseball sim on the market, as some wise sage said.

Come on Shaun!

I think to be fair, for the last number of years, Shaun has worked non stop on PureSim. I think he has burnt out on programing PureSim. I wish he adjusted/upgraded PureSim for a month or two each year. Then waited till the next year to work on the game again. Maybe burnout would not be a problem. However, I for one sure would have missed all of those up dates. It is a shame because this game was really cooking. I may buy the new BBW when it comes out, but I'm not into replays. I just love hearing Erine do the game. Announcing the play by play is alot of fun for me.

I'm no mystic, but I feel that Shaun will probably come back with a bang. This game is in his blood, it's his baby, his pet. I'm sure he feels about the program the same way we feel when we have a special PS association going. What better way for us to truly appreciate him than "suffering" through his absence? Brilliant marketing strategy? I hope so. I do miss the frequent updates, though.

At least he left us with a gem. I would bet KG's rent (or mortgage) that Shaun will be back to apply some polish soon.

If I'm wrong, we'll need to recruit some rabid YANKEE fans to bad-mouth the game on this board. THAT'LL draw Shaun back for sure! [;)]

You know... this is a hard one to call. In a way, as a devoted fan who takes this game seriously and almost creates a relationship with the fictional players I manage, I favor the players' side heavily. This is a wonderful game that has only minor issues, but they're just 'minor enough' that they can disrupt playability. As a customer, you don't want to feel "left out" by a company or firm once you've purchased a game and everything hasn't come out daisies.

However...

As a father and a husband (who has recently had his own "why haven't you been spending more time with us" conversation with his wife) I can very clearly understand Shaun's position. He has undertaken something, a massive epic project and taken it to a level that few others have been able to match. No game is perfect. However, Shaun has managed to put together something that, even with its occasional flaws, is still a wonder to play, enjoy and experience.

One of the most painful, impacting feelings of corporate abandonment I have experienced came at the hands of another baseball game; EA Sports' MVP 2005. The game was marketed and supported for the most part. However, it seemed that from one minute to the next, like a thief in the night, the game was gone. No email. No web site. Nothing. It's like the Men in Black stepped in and erased every trace of the game's existence. Sure, lots of companies eventually abandon their older, outdated games, but there was something particularly cold and deliberate about this severance.

The reason I bring this up is because I feel that Shaun had taken PS to a level beyond what other companies would do... and did so as a single person, not a company with a dedicated support staff.

While I continue to be tormented by the infrequent (yet still frustrating) bug, error and miscalculation, and while I wonder and hope each day that Shaun may have an epiphany (sp?), an out-of-desktop experience, or other monumental event in his life to bring him and his addictive, persistant, and committed worship of the PSB franchise... at the same time, I can't knock him for not doing that.

Like Dennis Miller used to say, "That's just our opinion, we welcome yours". I find KG to be a fellow and devout GBG-manager that I can relate to in many ways, and I hope this doesn't look like a coup against him. Likewise, I respect and appreciate all other Puresimmians that have posted here. This isn't an attack against them or anyone, just like it isn't a Shaun-butt-smooching effort on my part. I'm just posting my opinion like anyone else.

Frozen Stiffer, I gotta admit that my original post was in a fit of pique, and was really uncalled for. I feel guilty about it now, because I love how "our game" has developed.

Just before the Matrix deal went public, Shaun called me, knowing that I'd had some dealings with Matrix on SPWaW's continuing development. His dedication was apparent, and he just wanted a second (or third) opinion on whether he was doing the right thing.

I've never forgotten that, so maybe you can understand a bit more of the background to my comments.

At the same time, I realize that my commentaries on game changes often come off like "what about me?" That is selfish, so I'll retract my original gripe. He doesn't owe me or any of the rest of us a damn thing. The actual situation is just the opposite.
