Cardinals Stop Cubs 5 Game Streak
4/13/1982 Wrigley Field:
5th inning single & SB for W McGee, IBB to G Hendrick, and another BB to D Porter with nobody out set the table for K Hernandez. Hernandez GB single scored McGee. Two batters later, Hendrick scored from 3rd on the SAC fly by T Herr. The only scare for the Cardinals came in the bottom of the 9th inning. D Hood, in his 2nd inning of relief, gave up a 2b to Cubs leadoff M Hall who then scored one batter later on the throwing error from T Herr. B Sutter was called in from the bullpen. A single by P Tabler and a HBP to S Fletcher and the bases were jammed with 1 out and the Cardinals leading 5-2. PH T Walker was called on to try to break the game open for the Cubs. A 2-1 pitch from Sutter got Walker to bounce into the game ending 6-4-3 DP.

4/14/1982 Wrigley Field:
L Durham lead off the 4th inning with a single to center off starter B Forsch. Next batter, M Hall, sent a 2-1 pitch over the LF fence for a 2-run HR. And that was the difference in the game. Cubs would add another run in the 5th. Cardinals scored a run in the 1st and 8th innings, but otherwise never really fired in the game. B Forch managed only 4 IP before being relieved by J Martin. Young D Noles of the Cubs, named POG, went 8 solid IP giving up 4 hits & 5 Ks.
Cardinals will return tomorrow with rookie J Stuper taking the mound.

Cubs Whoop Cardinals Butt
4/15/1982 Wrigley Field
Manager Lucey shook up the lineup hoping to wake up the bats of the Cardinals. Cards put up 10 hits but only scored 2 runs this afternoon. Cards scored both of their runs in the 1st inning thanks to G Hendricks 2nd HR of the season with L Smith on base. After that it was all Cubs. RBI triples from S Fletcher in 3rd inning and S Henderson in the 5th inning combined with M Hall's RBI double in the 7th capped the decisive win for the Cubs. POG honors go to SP D Bird for an outstanding performance: 9 IP & 5 K's. Cardinals now drop below .500 and need to find some continuity in the lineup. They currently have 6 regular players hitting .250 or worse.

Cardinals Win; Carlton Flirts With No-Hitter
S Carlton took a no-hit bid into the 7th inning only to be denied by leadoff hitter, W McGee single into RF. McGee would eventually score the games only run on K Hernandez's single. Those were the only two hits the Cardinals would get all day. Enough to saddle Carlton with his 2nd loss of the season and the first win for J Andujar. B Sutter gets his 2nd save after shutting down the Phillies in the 9th stranding the tying run at 2nd base. We return tomorrow afternoon of the 3 game series with starter S Mura for Cardinals.

L Smith Walk Off RBI Single
4/17/09 Busch Stadium:
Cardinals got behind 6-1 going into the bottom of 6th. P Rose drove in 4 of the 6 Phiilies runs as he went 3 for 3 today. Phillie starter M Bystrom was cruising until the 6th inning. D Porter, pinch hitting for starter S Mura, doubled to LCF. He would score on L Smith's single. Smith would end up on 3rd base on a hit-run play by M Ramsey, and that was followed by another hit-run play by W McGee, scoring L Smith. G Hendrick's SAC fly would score Ramsey from 3rd base, pulling the Cardinals to within 6-4 score. Cardinals reliever D Hood blanked the Phillies in 7th, 8th, and 9th innings. Meanwhile, the Cardinals added a run in the 8th, but still trailed 6-5 going in to the bottom of the 9th inning. Phillies RP R Reed took the mound and promptly gave up a single to K
Hernandez. Continuing with tactic that worked earlier, Hernandez reached 3rd with the hit-run by S Braun. Hernandez would score the tying run with the hit-run by T Herr. Pinch hitter D Green got an IBB to load the bases for the next hitter, L Smith who hit a 2-1 pitch through the left side of the infield to score the game winning run.

Cardinals Dish It Out To Phillies
4/18/1982 Busch Stadium:
St. Louis jumped to an early start today. Back to Back singles from L Smith and M Ramsey to start the game, followed by consecutive BB's from Phillies starter L Christenson, lead to 3 runs from the Cardinals by the time the 1st inning ended. St. Louis would add 3 more runs in the 3rd inning. In all, 3rd baseman S Braun accounted to 4 RBIs on the day. D Lapoint pitched 6 good innings, J Martin came on in 2 IP relief, and B Sutter closed it out in the 9th. The Phillies never threatened in the game.

K Hernandez HR Lifts Cardinals; Mura Injured
4/23/1982 Veterans Stadium:
All the scoring was done in the 8th inning when T Herr singled and then scored on K Hernandez's 2-run HR. Both the Cardinals and Phillies scattered 5 hits. SP S Mura was injured making the last out of the 7th inning and had to be replaced by D Hood who closed out the 8th. That set up the table for B Sutter to come in and pick up his 3rd save of the season.

Porter Delivers Big Blow
4/24/1982 Veterans Stadium
Game tied 2-2 heading into the 8th inning. L Smith led off with a walk and went to 3rd on the throwing error by Diaz during a steal attempt. G Hendrick was IBB and he stole 2nd base. D Porter then hit a 1-1 pitch 438' to LCF for a 3-Run HR to put the Cardinals ahead for good 5-2. D Hood shut down the bottom of the 8th inning to secure his 2nd win. And that setup for B Sutter to garner his 4th save.

Hits Galore for Cardinals
4/25/1982 Veterans Stadium:
J Stuper got lots of run support today from the Cardinals bats. Doubles from D Porter, L Smith and G Hendrick combined with 2-out RBIs from G Tenace, D Porter, L Smith and W McGee led to 6 Runs on 14 hits. Cardinal baserunning was on display as league leader L Smith stole his 11th and McGee swiped his 6th. J Stuper (2-2) went all 9 IP 6 Ks to garner his 2nd win. Hendrick was 2-4 2 runs scored, McGee was 4-6 2 runs scored. Porter was 2-4 2 RBIs. Tenace was 1-2 3 BBs.

Two Powerful Pitchers; One Great Game
Riverfront Stadium:
J Andujar vs T Seaver! It was a promising matchup that did not disappoint. If the Reds hitting is enemic - and it is - there pitching staff is just the opposite. This afternoon, Seaver pitched a brilliant game, going 9 IP, scattering 6 hits, 5 Ks, and did not allow a run to score. But Andujar went one better going 10 IP, 2 hits, and 4Ks!! That pushes ndujar's record to 3-1 with a league leading 0.82 ERA. D Hood picked up the save. Cincinnati's B Lesley got the loss by loading the bases in the top of the 11th and with 1 out, gave up a RBI single to O Smith that scored D Porter from 3rd base.

M Soto and G Redus Power Reds in 1st of Twin Bill
M Soto (4-1) pitched 8 IP allowing 2 runs on 4 hits. He got all the help he would need in the 2nd inning from a SAC fly by C Cedeno and from G Redus' 3-Run HR. Cardinals tried to claw their way back into it in the 9th, but came up 1 run short.

Riverfront Stadium:
Cardinals Take The Nightcap
Cardinals and Reds put on a hitting exhibition in the 2nd game of the double header. Cardinals seemed to be cruising leading 7-1 going into the bottom of the 7th. B Forsch had pitched 5 IP allowing the Reds only 1 run. J Martin was on in relief - normally he has been very consistent reliever and dependable. But in the bottom of the 7th, Martin allowed 3 Runs on 5 hits, pulling the Reds to within 3 runs (7-4). The absolutely unthinkable happened in the home half of the 8th when, with 1 out, Cardinals Manager Lucey - having just witnessed a double by R Oester and not able to contain himself any longer - brought in ace reliever B Sutter. No one can even recall the last time B Sutter was brought in before the 9th inning in a ball game. According to Bill James' Sabermetric Staff Of Genius': "Bringing Sutter in before the 9th inning is a formula for instant meltdown in the 9th inning; the guy can't last." Sutter got the next two batters out to finish off the 8th inning. Heading into the bottom of the 9th, Sutter strode to the mound with a 7-4 lead and promptly inticed E Milner into a harmless ground out. Then, a funny thing happened....C Cedeno singled. That was followed by a G Redus single. After a D Driessen flyout, J Bench - representing the tying run - singled through the hole on the left side that allowed Cedeno to come home from 2nd. (7-5). B Martinez came to the plate with the tying run now at 1st. On a 3-2 count, Sutter delivered the fast ball...home plate umpire Don Denkinger called... "Ball Four"!!! Manager Lucey was livid. And from the replays that pitch looked right down the middle of the plate. With 2 outs and the bases jammed, the tying run on 2nd, up comes R Oester who doubled his last AB. The first pitch is fouled back out of play. The 0-1: Ball 1! The 1-1: Swing and a miss; he had cut at it! The 1-2: Ball 2! The 2-2: A long fly ball...deep CF...at the track...McGee makes the catch!!! Cardinals win! Forsch gets the win (1-1), Sutter the save (7), and Manager Lucey is reaching for the Makers Mark after this game/recap. :)

Too Little Too Late
Cardinals got behind early as J Stuper just didn't have his best tonight. Braves tatooed Stuper for 4 runs in the 2nd, 1 in the 4th, and added another 4 runs in the 5th. If their was a silver lining to be found, it was in RP's J Kaat, J Lahti and M Littell combining for 4 IP, scattering 3 hits and allowing only 1 run after the 5th inning. Meanwhile, Cardinals hitters rallied in the 9th inning scoring 5 runs on 4 hits and forcing the Braves to bring in 3 different RP's in just the 9th inning alone. In the end the Braves held on to win 10-7. Braves B Butler was 2-4, 4 RBIs. Cardinals G Hendrick was 3-5. Cardinals failed to capitalize on SP R Mahler's high 6.02 ERA. C D Porter's 12 game hitting streak is still intact as he had the day off.

Oberkfell Delivers In Xtra Innings
K Oberkfell has been struggling all season - hitting below .200 coming in to todays game. But tonight with the game tied 6-6 in bottom of the 12th 2 outs and D Porter on 2nd, Oberkfell rifled a R Camp 2-1 fastball into the LCF gap to score Porter and winning run! Both sides used 4 pitchers in the game. B Horner led the charge for the Braves on 2-4 for 3 RBIs & 2 runs, triple & HR. L Smith and T Landrum (filling in for W McGee on DL) combined in the 1-2 batting slot on 6-10 for 3 RBIs & 3 runs, 1 SB. R Camp (0-2) gets the loss. B Forsch (2-1) gets the win. D Porter picked up 2 hits tonight to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.

Herr and Hernandez Too Much For Braves
T Herr collected 4 hits on 4 ABs, scoring 2 runs against the Braves today. K Hernandez chipped in 2 hits including a 2-RBI triple. D LaPoint (5-0) had a good outing, backed up by D Hood and B Sutter in relief. Braves SP L McWilliams, the NL best pitcher (6-1) was undefeated entering the game but was chased from the mound after just 4.2 IP. D Porter's 13 game hit streak is still in tact as he had the day off against a LHP.

Cardinals Hang On For Important Win
B Forsch (3-1) went 5 IP giving up 3 Runs (all on BBs) to get the win. J Martin and A Hawkins came on and did a superb job of snuffing out the Reds. L Smith went 4-5 and scored twice. K Hernandez drove in 2 runs, and O Smith contributed 3 hits on 4 ABs. The Reds R Oester provided the excitement for Cincinnati with a 5th inning 3-Run HR to temporarily give Cincinnati a 3-2 lead. But the wheels came off for B Shirley in the bottom of the 5th. He was chased from the mound having given up 6 earned runs. The Reds never threatened thereafter. This wraps up the two game home stand for the Cardinals, who will next travel to Atlanta for a 4-game series beginning 5/13/82.

Porter's Streak Comes to End; Cards Edge Braves
Braves jump to a 4-1 lead in bottom of the 2nd. Cards came right back with 4 more runs of their own in the top of the 3rd to take a 5-4 lead. Cards added 1 more in the 7th to make it 6-4 heading in to the 9th inning and B Sutter taking the mound. Things looked well in hand. But Sutter proceeded to walk leadoff batter B Ayala - who moved to second on a WP. Ayala would score on a J Royster single. Royster would score the tying run on a R Johnson double into the gap. In top 10th, D Porter reached on what the official scorer called an error (thereby ending his hitting streak at 15 games). G Tenace then doubled into the gap, driving in Porter and what turned out to be the winning run. Sutter closed out the bottom of the 10th earning him the win (3-0) and a blown save (2).

Braves Take 3 Out of 4
In the 4th and final game of the series, Braves win 5-2 over Cards. Rumors swirl in Cards organization that perhaps the rookie J Stuper (2-5) needs to be replaced in the rotation by A Hawkins who has been doing a great job in long relief. The Cards are now 2.5 games in 2nd place to the Cubs. Braves were led today by B Ayala and his Grandslam in the 6th inning. The Cards have tomorrow off and then start their 9-game west coast swing that begins in San Diego for 3 game series, then heads to Los Angeles, and finally the NL West leading San Francisco Giants.

Padres Squeak By
Padres eek out a 6-5 win having been spotted a 6-1 lead after 4 innings. D LaPoint was hammered - his worst outing yet - allowing 6 runs in 6 IP. J Kaat came on in relief and did a fantastic jump of shutting down the Padres while Cards hitters climbed back into the game thanks in part to T Landrum solo HR and a key double by L Smith. The rubber game is tomorrow.

Andujar Pitches a Gem; Cards Win 2 out of 3
J Andujar (5-2) pitched his 2nd CG of the season as the Cards win 5-1 and take 2 out of 3 from Padres. Every position player in Cards lineup got a hit today with the exception of O Smith - tho he did drive in 2 RBIs. L Smith was definitely the spark for the Cards today going 5-5, raising his BAVG to .331 and stealing his league leading 24th base. Part of his 5-5 day included his first HR of the season - a 6th inning solo shot to LCF. Cards travel to Los Angeles next.

A Hawkins was cruising his way throught his first start with Cards. Through 8 IP he had given up only 5 hits and was leading 2-1. In the bottom of the 9th, R Cey led off with a solo HR. A 1 out BB to D Thomas put the winning run on 1b. M Marshall singled to RF and Thomas scampered to 3b. Now the winning run was a mere 90 ft away. A 1-1 pitch to G Brock was lined into LCF that scored Thomas from 3rd. A heart breaking loss considering the Dodgers are the last place team in the NL West.

Took 13 Inn. to win against LA
Well, it took 13 innings to overcome a masterful piece of pitching by Dodgers F Valenzuela who went 10.1 IP, scattered 6 hits and only gave away a single run while fanning 11 Cards. In the Top 3th, Cards got the winning run thanks to a throwing error charged to R Cey that scored K Hernandez from 3rd. Cards must now travel to Northern California to face the NL West leading Giants for a 3-game series. Cards are still in 2nd in the East 5.5 games behind the Cubs.

THIS DAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY (May 23rd):
1926 - Hack Wilson smacks a fifth inning home run off the Wrigley Field scoreboard, situated at ground level, to start a 14-8 rout of the Braves. Wilson is the first player to hit a ball off the scoreboard, which, in 1937, will be moved atop the newly built bleachers. Later that night, Wilson and a few others are arrested at a friend's apartment for drinking beer in violation of the Prohibition Act.
1978 - The A.L. approves the transfer of the Red Sox to a group headed by Jean Yawkey, Buddy LeRoux, and Haywood Sullivan. The purchase price is $15 million. Sullivan had a seven-year catching career for the Red Sox and Royals, while LeRoux was the Boston trainer for eight years.
1980 - Five hours after the midnight deadline passes, the players and owners avert a strike by announcing a new four-year basic agreement. The new deal raises the minimum salary from $21,000 to $30,000 and increases the clubs' contributions to the players' pension fund, but the major issue of free-agent compensation remains unresolved.

Cards Bludgeon Giants 15-3
Cards unleashed everything they had against the NL West Giants; pushing the Giants loosing streak to 8 games. Cards scored a run in every inning of the game except the 7th. Their 4-run 5th and 5-run 6th inning put the cards ahead 13-3, adding two more runs in the 8th & 9th. All starters came through with at least 1 hit; T Landrum and G Hendrick had 4 hits, 3 RBIs and 2 runs apiece.
Meanwhile, L Smith, K Hernandez, T Herr and M Ramsey each had 3 hits; Ramsey also had a game high 4 RBIs. G Hendrick collected his 4th HR of the season, a solo HR in 9th off D Schatzeder. A Hawkins, who had that heartbreak of loss in the 9th inning of his last start, pitched 7 IP allowing 5 hits and 3 runs - lowering his ERA on the season to 1.23. J Martin came in to close out the last 2 innings allowing a hit and 1 K.
The Giants, once a dominant force in the NL West are quickly giving ground to the hard charging Atlanta Braves who are a mere 1.5 behind the Giants. The Cardinals still hold 2nd place in the NL East 6 games behind the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs won again today - their 12th win in a row.
Cardinals have the day off tomorrow before hosting the San Diego Padres in St. Louis.

THIS DAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY (May 26th):
1925 - In Detroit's 8-1 win over the White Sox, Ty Cobb becomes the first to collect 1,000 career extra-base hits. He will finish with 1,139.
1930 - Joe Sewell strikes out twice facing lefthander Pat Caraway of the White Sox. It is the last time the Indians third baseman will fan this season, striking out only three times in 353 at-bats.
1946 - At 2-for-42 and hitting .048 for the season, Mel Ott stops playing and only manages the Giants.
1950 - The Athletics make some changes. Connie Mack's son, Earle, who had been assistant manager, assumes the duties of chief scout. Earle, who had hoped to succeed his father as manager, is replaced by Jimmy Dykes. Mickey Cochrane is named general manager.
1959 - In a singular performance, Harvey Haddix of the Pirates pitches a perfect game against Milwaukee for 12 innings, only to lose in the 13th. Felix Mantilla opens the last inning by reaching base on an error. A sacrifice and an intentional walk to Hank Aaron brings up Joe Adcock, who hits one out of the park in right-center field for an apparent 3-0 victory. Aaron leaves the field, and Adcock passes him on the basepaths. Both are called out as Mantilla scores. Lew Burdette goes all the way for his eighth win, scattering 12 hits.
1976 - In a scoreless game in Anaheim, Chicago's Ken Brett has a no-hitter with two out in the ninth when California's Jerry Remy tops a slow roller down the third base line. Third baseman Jorge Orta lets the ball roll and, in a controversial ruling, it is scored a hit, though many thought it ought to be ruled an error. Brett gives up a hit in the tenth to ex-Sox Bill Melton but wins the game 1-0 in 11 innings.
