TrackIR support

Post by Jepep Hepep »

Will there be TrackIR support in the Gathering Storm? It's a MUST have feature, since the ships now have cockpits. If it isn't in yet I hope it's not too late, check out this page: http://www.naturalpoint.com/ to find out more. It shouldn't be too much work to include support and the NAturalpoint people will probably be glad to assist you in any way.

this is what the annoucment said about that

"Starshatter: The Gathering Storm features some of the most impressive graphics and sounds to be found.  Sound enhancements include voice acting and new sound effects, while graphic enhancements bring the game to a new visual level, but also we’ve included cockpit mode for fighters to support Track IR headsets!"

Wow, I must have missed that, I skipped all the graphics-related stuff while looking for info on a new tactical and strategic AI. TrackIR support is going to be great. I'm not too sure about the new cockpits, though, at least the one on the video looks like it's going to be bad for situational awareness.

Here's a free tip, that's probably coming too late for GS:

Since we're flying a futuristic spacecraft a lot of the cockpit could be "see-through" initially, but after taking a few hits the "holes" in the cockpit would be replaced by now nonfunctional video screens. "Realistic" and good for playability.

i agree with you that the cockpits as they look obscure too much of the screen.  i posted about this is the forums, since if today's fighters can have cockpits which allow the pilot maximum visibility, i'd imagine future fighters could do the same.  as is, the ss2 cockpits take up too much of the lower and middle screen, making it look as if the pilot's nose is almost pressed right up against them.  i hope they implement a viewpoint from slightly further back, allowing for more peripheral vision.

Ok, the support is supposed to be in. I'm still in the process of finding out how, but if anyone can speed up my learning process please do so. I can't find Starshatter in the TrackIR software and I'm using a pretty new version, how am I supposed to enalble enhanced mode?

I'm trying to figure this one out myself.  The instructions say it supports TIR 3.1, but then nothing beyond how to enable the feature.

Hopefully, SS doesn't exclusively support 3.1, as most people are using 4.0 now.

Here's the part from my error.log file:

*** NaturalPoint Game Client Initialization ***
NPClient - Initialize successful.
NPClient - Window handle registration successful.
NPClient - NaturalPoint software version: 4.00
NPClient - Cursor stopped.
NPClient - Data transmission started.

As far as I can tell everything sounds ok, unless cursor stopped isn't something ominous.

It seems that things are progressing. Hopefully it won't be long before everything's ready to roll.

Great news.

In the meantime, I was able to get it to work using TIRMouse.exe in the TrackIR 4.0 folder.  You have to program a button for the right mouse button and enable mouselook, but it works, however crudely.

Of course, it looks like the mouse y axis is permanently inverted regardless of menu selection, and now mouselook isn't working at all, so I might've broken something[:@].

You could try poking the config files in SHGS root folder or renaming them if your mouse problems persist.

Would anyone happen to have any idea on how long it might take to have the TIR systems working?

Jepep Hepep - What exactly is the problem you are experiencing?  All I have is an old TrackIR 3.1 system, and it seems to work fine for me.  Is TrackIR 4 not backward compatible?

TrackIR 4 should be backward compatible. Are you using mouse emulation mode or native TrackIR support? My problem is that I can't find Starshatter in the profiles list for supported games and thus the game and TIR just don't connect. I'm using TrackIR 4 pro with version 4.1 software and unfortunately I don't remember exactly what the 3.n versions looked like. The TIR doesn't go into enhanced mode, because it doesn't recognize Starshatter when the game starts.

Was there an option to force enhanced mode on in 3.1? Is that how you use it? If so, you need to contact TrackIR people and tell them how their software can recognize Starshatter so that they can add it to their supported games list and we can create a profile for it and basically get it to work. I think.

Uhm TIR should work... I must do something wrong - as the previous post states, TIR doesnt connect to the game.

Is it supposed to work in every view mode?

I tried it in the "virtual cockpi" -mode (or something like that). There's a blue LED on the unit that shows you when you're in enhanced mode (=when the TIR recognizes the game and loads a profile) and it never lights.

Has there been any progress in the TrackIR (4.x) support? I download the latest game support lists from naturalpoint every day hoping to find Starshatter in them, no luck so far.

Just recently bought the game and I could not get my TrackIR 4 to work with the VC. So yeah, any updates on that would be nice.

I think it's somewhat clear that 4.x version TIR doesn't work. Since the earlier version supposedly does it can't be that difficult to fix. I hope. What exactly is going on between Naturalpoint and Milo / Matrix? Are they actually working on the issue, does Naturalpoint already have a copy of Starshatter? When can we expect it to appear on the supported games' list in the 4.x software?
