Crashing to desktop while selecting missions.
Crashing to desktop while selecting missions.
Hi, i just installed the game and when i select one of the missions in the very beginning i just crash to desk top. I tried re installing the game and the same thing happens just on a different mission. I've already installed both the patches so i'm out of ideas.
Oops forgot to mention that the first time i selected one of those uhh i think it was something on the lines of destroy minefield A or something
Second time was on an escort shuttle mission.
Any help would be appreciated thank you.

RE: Crashing to desktop while selecting missions.
I am getting exactly the same CTD
Last night just once it didn't do it. It tends to do it on Assault missions and they have symbols like @? listed after them eg Assault@? Destroy minefield A.
(the time it worked it had proper little black arrow pointers after the mission type instead)
Like you I have reinstalled, first 02a (which I assumed is all inclusive ?) and then both patches to see if this was the reason (it wasn't ...)
anyhow errorlog file attached, you can clearly see the cause of the crash.

RE: Crashing to desktop while selecting missions.
Well at least its good to know that someone else has the same problem as me. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to do? I've looked through the forums and i havent been able to find a solution to my problem or anyone else with a similar problem.
edit: i'm going to reinstall and not install the 5.02 patch and see if i get any improvements. I noticed that the 5.02 patch is a recent thing and that no one in the past has seems to had this problem so i think it might be a patch issue.
Edit 2: I just reinstalled and only installed the 5.01 patch. After i started it up all the buttoms seems to be labeled weird. Like it says something like form.start.text or whatever. After messing around i went into the folder and just started from there and that seems to solve the problem, although the version number says 5.0.0 still. I remember reading that somewhere else before so i'll look into that later.
However i just played like 6 different missions so far and i havent had a single crash to desktop. Plenty of crashing into the carriers as i tried to land though lol. Maybe i just got lucky with the install this time and everything copied correctly or i think it might be just the 5.02 patch giving me problems.
Does the 5.02 patch offer anything else besides the track ir function? I dont have that said equipment so it wont matter to me one bit but i was wondering if there was any bug fixes of some sort contained in that patch.

RE: Crashing to desktop while selecting missions.
To the best of my knowledge, the 5.0.2 patch has not been officially released. A such, I would not install it. Going to 5.0.1 over a clean install should resolve these errors...however, it might not be a bad idea to check your drivers for updates and check DirectX as well. Others have encountered sound issues and have found that running dxdiag in the background fixed that. Hope this helps.

RE: Crashing to desktop while selecting missions.
It is a real show stopper that the Dynamic campaign does not seem to run correctly with the 02a patch.
I use TIR and bought the game recently only because it supports this... (which it does for me)
It was officialy announced that Starshatter now supports TIR .
If 02a is a beta patch, why was it announced that Starshatter now supports TIR ?. Somebody has jumped the gun here and anounced as a feature something that is beta !
Bought yet another game to become a beta tester

Salutations,
There is a small simple mod fix available for the Orion fighter crashes problem. [;)]
Oh... yea, it's free.

Now commanders, get your pilots landing proficiencies way up and go destroy an enemy task force. [;)]

woooo i like that mod. Now i just have to figure out how not to get my butt kicked by fighters on a destroyer. I was able to destroy like 4 or 5 enemy ships but those pesky fighters blow me up way faster than the other ships. Can anyone point me in the right direction for some tips and strategies?

RE: Crashing to desktop while selecting missions.
There are a couple of solutions for that pesky anti-ship missile problem.
1. Don't lead from the front. Sounds cowardly, but the closest target always gets the lion's share of missiles and promptly goes boom.
2. It is possible to mod the stock ships so that they have flares (decoys) just like a fighter does...and they work against anti-ship missiles just like they do against anti-fighter missiles. In fact, I have always been kind of surprised that this wasn't standard given modern naval ships anti-missile defenses. In my own ships, this is a standard feature and it is pretty awesome to watch a wave of 24 strike fighters popping off their missiles at you, only to watch them go veering harmlessly away after your flares. [:D][:D] Then they come streaking into range of your standard point-defense weapons and get turned into paste.[8D]

RE: Crashing to desktop while selecting missions.
This is nothing to do with the Orion fighters crash bug fix which as I understand it ,fixes fighters crashing into the Orion during missions....
(although thank you all for that one
)
This is a CTD that crashes the entire program to the desktop when you select most of the fighter missions generated in the Dynamic campaign so you never even get to the mission !. (see enclosed error Log)
It would seem to be a result of the new patch as two of us have experianced (so far) it and the solution seems to be to to go back to the previous version.
Hence my slight frustration to discover that the new patch was beta...but having bought the game because it supported TIR !

RE: Crashing to desktop while selecting missions.
I can confirm this bug. It appears that most of the fighter missions now cause a CTD when chosen in the campaign interface.
RE: Crashing to desktop while selecting missions.
Has anyone done a complete re-intall of the game to version 5.0.1? [:)]
And if so... did the fighter missoin CTD problem disappear? [&:]

RE: Crashing to desktop while selecting missions.
Yes i have done a complete reinstall and only did the 5.01 and i have yet had any problems with the game. Except for some weird problems of not being able to see my hud when i start a mission after i get a mail message or something. But thats not a problem because i ususally save quit and go sleep after i'm done with a mission.
RE: Crashing to desktop while selecting missions.
I can confirm this crash as well. Assault missions seem to be the culprit. I reverted back to 5.01 and have encountered no crashes. I noticed the mission list text is now different in 5.02. Instead of something like MSN 005 Assault Mine Minefield A, the line in 5.02 just says Assault. It would appear track IR was not the only thing changed in 5.02.

rgr that.....crashes with 5.02a.....uninstall/re-install to 5.01...no problems. I did this several times to confirm. Patch 5.02a is definatly the problem. It's a shame because .02a runs TrackIR and .01 doesn't, but game runs very well.
PS. I'm new to this game and find it fascinating(Spock). I usually fly aircraft sims, but this space sim is a little different flying.[8D]
RE: Crashing to desktop while selecting missions.
I have also gotten crashes, also with 5.02 installed. I had my aircraft strike mission CTD. Ill try and go back to 5.01.
Otherwise then that. Its a cool game. I just want to get promoted to fly frigates

RE: Crashing to desktop while selecting missions.
Is there any news on this problem?? I don't want to upgrade to 5.02a if it makes the game unusable and looking at the contents of the patch it seems to be quite a bit more than just TIR enabling so it would be good to get the other fixes too.
Thanks.
Thanks.

RE: Crashing to desktop while selecting missions.
Does anyone from the dev team or Matrix games look in here at all? Even just a "we're working on fixing the problem" would be a helpful (and hopeful) thing to read.
Thanks,

RE: Crashing to desktop while selecting missions.
Greetings all! I'm new to this particular game, but I am a veteran of the classic Freespace and Wing Commander series.
I installed the game clean and patched to the most recent version and I found I had the same ctd issues during mission selection.
Is it possible that the ctd occurs when you try to select a mission flown by a fighter from a group you're not currently assigned to? I assumed that was the problem...if I was assigned to a Falcon fighter group and selected missions that only use the Falcon I didn't have a problem. If I selected assault when I'm assigned to a fighter group the system crashes...If this is true the only gripe I have is that the game should alert you that the mission type isn't available instead of kicking you out...
