so tempted....so, so tempted

Post by MythicalMino »

I am just a mouse-click away from buying this....BUT....

I need to know a few things:

1. What is the main gameplay like? the conquest game mode? Is it just a series of missions....or is it placed on a map of the galaxy? Are there two modes for that game mode (combat & galaxy)? How does that mode actually work?

2. Does anyone know if there is plans to add more than 2 players in the future?

I know I will come up with more....but these are the ones I am most wondering about now....

I am similarly considering this game, but with the new Massive Assault also out I'm somewhat torn, so I'm wondering if anyone has experience with both and can make a comparison, or in the case of this forum an arguement in favor of Supremacy.

Really I'm more concerned with the ability of the single player games to provide a challenge. MA seems to be having some bad AI issues on the world war maps, though it does have a nifty campaign which may or may not be worthwhile...

Also it seems that MA is going to charge a subscription for MP, though I'm not clear on all those details yet, then again I don't do much MP anyway so I don't really care that much about it.

My system is also a bit on the older side, and in particular I suffer from a chronic condition known as WinME so can someone comment on how well this game performs on WinME generaly, as I've encountered problems with other newer more gfx intensive games due solely to WinME (meaning my vid drivers and chipsets are all up do date, but WinME has other issues...)

Thanks

I'm another one of those tempted guys. A demo would really really help. Seems like I saw something on the game's offical page where they said they had a demo already ready.

So, come on. Give us a demo. Pretty please.

Hi MythicalMino,

I've answered about 101 questions about gameplay in this great thread:

tm.asp?m=789653

But here are some brief responses to your questions:
1. What is the main gameplay like? the conquest game mode? Is it just a series of missions....or is it placed on a map of the galaxy? Are there two modes for that game mode (combat & galaxy)? How does that mode actually work?

In a conquest game, you start in space with one or more planets, and usually one or more vessels. The goal is to acquire every other planet in the solar system. In order to acquire a planet, you must engage in a ground-based battle (tactics-style) and come out the winner. This is a VERY basic description of how it works.
2. Does anyone know if there is plans to add more than 2 players in the future?

Supremacy was designed from the ground up as a 2-player game, and there are no current plans to add additional players. However, we're open to ideas for future patches, so feel free to keep the feedback coming.

Hope this helps, and if any questions you have are not discussed in the questions thread I linked for you, don't hesitate to ask!

thanks....

I had read through that thread, but didn't really see anything on my main question.....how the conquest mode played. I am still up in the air about this one, though. It sounds great....but still....just not 100% sold.....

Well I guess my being stuck with WinME makes me need to skip this game. Oh well, in time maybe I'll upgrade, and by then hopefully people will have painted a fuller picture of the gameplay and the AI.

1. What is the main gameplay like? the conquest game mode? Is it just a series of missions....or is it placed on a map of the galaxy? Are there two modes for that game mode (combat & galaxy)? How does that mode actually work?

Here's how it works (I'm talking single-player here): when you start the game you choose a Commanding Officer for yourself and one for your opponent (or let the computer choose an opponent for you). The four available CO's offer subtly different advantages. Then you choose a map to play on. These range from very tiny (two starting planets + 1 neutral, all close together) to very large (10 planets or so, spread out, which is more than it sounds like). There are 16 maps to choose from. Finally, you choose a game type. There are six different ways to play: Conquest, Rescue Hero, Protect Home Planet, King of the Station, Capture Home Planet, and Body Counts.

Maps are not randomly generated, nor is there any kind of scenario structure or story. You have sixteen static galaxy maps and each game is a self-contained, head-to-head battle of whichever type you choose. Basically, what happens is you build units on the planets you own and then ship them off to attack other planets. Attacking another planet involves sending your troops planetside to engage in tactical combat. Once the other side's units are eliminated, you own the planet.

If you think of S:FPTP as something like Chess in space, you'll be nearer to the truth than if you compare it to X-Com or other story-driven games like that.

That's a good basic description jnewl. I would only add that if you choose different game types (other than conquest), there are many more than 16 maps to choose from, as each game type has its own set of maps. :)

Thanks. Didn't even realize that. I'm playing a Rescue Hero game right now, but didn't notice the difference in maps.
