Questions...

I was wondering/thinking:

1. Anyone use pistols? I think that rifles are better all the time, even up close... if anyone has a good use for them, please let me know
2. Vehicles... I guess they are okay really early game when you can't always field a full squad of troopers. But as soon as you can field 8 soldiers a battle, why use them? They are slow, big, have limited ammo, and not as accurate as trained troopers. You also can't heal them and they don't accrue experience points. So, are they viable after the first couple months?
3. Is there a way to fire extra soldiers? I'm into november on my game and have about 6 rookies that haven't seen the battlefield cause I have a steady rotation of about 12 veterans that do all my fighting. The only way I could think of would be to start a battle with just these extra guys and abandon them with the "flee" command... I'm tired of paying their upkeep.
4. Tech tree... anyone have it all mapped out?
5. Can the thunder carry 10 soldiers or just 6 + vehicle?

I use a pistol armmed Scout, but his worth is not in firepower, but in speed and eyes, plus he carries a lot of nades if he needs to kill something

would say depends on how you play, they are cheap compared to troopers, can be used and thrown away if need be and can be used for bait

with some of the mods you can hire or fire troopers, but I would keep them and put them to work, if you have two transports, make one for big battles and one for taking out scouts, get them a little exp and they are much better then being a rookie

yes, you can carry all troopers

1. I never use pistols. They are for when you have a trooper in a situtation with low AP at the end of his move. Pistols cost less AP, so you could get a last shot off if need by. Also, pistols allow you to carry a different type of weapon category. Later on this can be useful as some aliens have natural defenses against some attacks and weaknesses against others. Still, I don't use the pistol much.

2. Tanks, especially the light one you can buy instead of build, are great in that they keep troopers out of the hopsital. However, many times 8 troopers are better. If you are low on soldiers due to many in sickbay, a tank is ok in a pinch. I don't take takes to fighters unless I have to, tho. In the very early game the tank is the best unit you have.

3. If you want to fire a soldier, it is not recommended, you could send him alone on a scout mission and leave him. He will be gone if you flee even before he dies. However, you need all the soldiers you can get.

4 & 5. As The Man (Hard Sarge) has pointed out, you can put 10 troopers on the Thunder. Look in the other topics for the tech tree.

Pistols are later on for training rookies that don't have strength for plasma/ion/akew etc. rifle.  Giving them a ion/plasma pistol and some plasma grenades means they can contribute...
 
Vehicles, nah, use them for base defense only
 
Extra troops - you never know when you'll need them.  I lost 8 out of 10 troops on a recent base mission :( - only my two flame throwing guys saved the day...
