initial reactions (mini map and unit status)

A brand new campaign-based 3D tactical engine covering combat in World War II, from the developers at Koios Works. The first operation covered is the famous "Wintergewitter" or Winter Storm, a desperate attempt by Hoth's 57th Panzer Korps to break through to the encircled 6th Armee at Stalingrad and the Soviet counter-attack by 2nd Guards Army that drove them back.

initial reactions (mini map and unit status)

Post by TerryV06 »

First of all, I'm not a master wargamer. Since my gaming time is limited with real life concerns, I get to play these things for short times only. I have played all of the CM versions and still like them all. Also the Total War stuff. I am not comparing this game to any of the CM stuff either. I will take it on its own merits. I bought it because of the campaign feature. I like the Panzer General continuence of the game, taking care of units, advancing them etc.
With all of that being said, here are two initial reactions to my first campaign. Starting as the germans, as I look at the mini map, my forces are displayed on the top. When I use it to find my units, it feels like I am looking into a mirror and seeing everything backwards sort of. Its a bit confusing if you follow. Is there any way to rotate the map? It would also be nice to zoom in on it as well.
Also, when I look at the unit icons in the HUD, some of the dispay for them changes as the battle progresses. Now an X thru a unit icon I can understand, but other units get shading etc. What do those mean? What is the unit condition status? Is there a way to access this? Stunned, morale dimished etc...

a unit that is under fire during the turn will get shaded.

on the mini map - it is always fixed. while in the 3D space you can rotate around etc. pretty much every 3D game with a mini map has the problem that the mini map perspective is often different from the viewport. The 'cone' on the mini map shows you the direction your camera is facing to help you get your bearings. Also, you can hit the tilde key ~ to set the camera back to default.

Well about the minimap I agree it'll make sense if it'll be oriented so the side you're coming from is bottom, and you'll advance up towards the top. At least you'll know what village is on your right and what other is on your left ! [:'(]

I'm not sure if we'll change this for the original scenarios, but we will do our best to keep this in mind for all new scenarios. Thanks for the feedback.

Was this in the manual somewhere? I thought I'd read it somewhat throughly...

Yes, it's mentioned on Page 20:

"During play, if a unit comes under enemy fire, the unit’s mini icon will receive a yellow highlight to
quickly notify you of this."
