Armor Piercing, Core Rigid.  Used against very heavy armor.

AP= Armor piercing, mostly made of steel and some had high explosive in them also.
APCR= Armor piercing composite rigid , a solid round that was mostly made of harder metals. They found during the war that an APCR round would penetrate thicker armor than a AP round would And I think the Germans came out with it first in North Africa.
HE= High explosive, these where the shells that where used against men , buildings , anti-personel things of that sort.

There where others that where tried and some are still used today, like:
HEAT= High explosive anti tank , it would use a solid shot that is helped through the armor by the explosive and the solid round will turn to a liquid metal as it burned through. Many types of this type.
APHV= Armor piercing hyper velocity, this one we made in WWII to counter there APCR, the shell was on a carriage that caused the shell to turn back-wards an take the effect of the rifling out of the gun barrel, when the shot is not spinning when it hit the armor it would not tend to skip off the slanted armor of the tank when it hit and the energy would be put fully into the armor.

There where a few other types used but most where just for testing and where not used in large quantity's.
