"Run Until" Request

Command Ops: Battles From The Bulge takes the highly acclaimed Airborne Assault engine back to the West Front for the crucial engagements during the Ardennes Offensive. Test your command skills in the fiery crucible of Airborne Assault’s “pausable continuous time” uber-realistic game engine. It's up to you to develop the strategy, issue the orders, set the pace, and try to win the laurels of victory in the cold, shadowy Ardennes.
Command Ops: Highway to the Reich brings us to the setting of one of the most epic and controversial battles of World War II: Operation Market-Garden, covering every major engagement along Hell’s Highway, from the surprise capture of Joe’s Bridge by the Irish Guards a week before the offensive to the final battles on “The Island” south of Arnhem.

"Run Until" Request

Post by loyalcitizen »

A lot of times when I'm using the quite useful "Run Until" feature, I'm really waiting for reinforcements or an airstrike. As it happens now... I miss out on a lot of airstrikes when I step away to get a drink or whatever.

What I'd like to see are two additional "Run Until" buttons that are event specific instead of time specific:

Reinforcements
Airstrike

Thanks,
Matt

That's hitting the nail with a nail-set; very good.

As I mentioned in another thread I would love to see this feature.. but expanded much more.

Options could include auto stop, auto reduce to normal time, auto centre on unit, etc. You could then tailor what would cause this.. i.e, airstrikes available, reinforcements, unit spotted, casualties, retreat, reached destination, vp gain/loss and lots more.

Air Strikes and Reinforcements at a minimum would be awesome!

I find Run Until not so useful for this very reason unless I know none of these key events will occur.

Excellent idea. I'm often sitting there waiting to hit pause and assign orders the second reinforcements appear.
While the battles the British fight may differ in the widest possible ways, they invariably have two common characteristics – they are always fought uphill and always at the junction of two or more map sheets.

Pause is for wimps. Real men play at full speed all the time. [;)]

More seriously though, it's a neat idea.

TT3259 - UI - Run Until - Options to Pause when specified events occur

Pause for:
- airstikes
- reinforcements
- new enemy spotted ( not sure about the efficacy of this one )
- friendlies retreating/routing
- objective achieved/lost

Option to slow down rather than pause and to centre map on triggering unit/location. Plus send message as to why paused/slowed down.

My new PC is soooo fast that on Full Speed I have a hard time getting my airstrikes in time before they are gone. [8|]

Arjuna,

Great stuff for adding a TT on the run until and pause for options. You're right about the new enemy spotted being dubious. It would probably just be spam as it would happen so often.

If anyone has played a Paradox game the options presented there re. messages are in the ballpark of what I think would work well in AA games. Basically anything that might appear in the message log could be configured for staying in the message log, or to slow/pause the game with a further option to auto centre on the unit issuing the message.

To my mind it would help get to grips with what's going on, on the battlefield.

As to faster computers running COTA with ease.. Do we absolutely need the limits on 2000 sq miles mapsize and 400 units? Generous as they are, if they were removed the scenerio's issued with the game could still be tailored to be playable on the advertised hardware specs.. but people designing their own scenerio's would be at liberty to do any size they see fit. If it didn't run on anything but the latest hardware that would be the choice of the designer.. If it ran slow on medium spec machines, that would be the player's choice to try it.. there could be no comeback on Panther as it wouldn't be a scenario provided by them..

I realise there are probably limits in the game engine on the map size. If that would be hard to re-code I guess it's a no go.. but could the unit limit be easily removed/increased?

Re MapMaker - Map Size limit. Yes we can increase the total map area limit. I will have to check what our storage size limit would be though.

Banquet,

Just for the sake of clarity, adding a task into TaskTracker does not guarantee it will get done for BFTB. We prioritise the thousand or so tasks we have outstanding to produce a shortlist of criticals and then we just go for it, doing as many of these as we can in the time available. Some will miss the cut. So we'll do our best but no promisses OK.

Understood. I am just glad to see these things get consideration for a future release :)
