Bulge vs. COTA (HTTR info)

Command Ops: Battles From The Bulge takes the highly acclaimed Airborne Assault engine back to the West Front for the crucial engagements during the Ardennes Offensive. Test your command skills in the fiery crucible of Airborne Assault’s “pausable continuous time” uber-realistic game engine. It's up to you to develop the strategy, issue the orders, set the pace, and try to win the laurels of victory in the cold, shadowy Ardennes.
Command Ops: Highway to the Reich brings us to the setting of one of the most epic and controversial battles of World War II: Operation Market-Garden, covering every major engagement along Hell’s Highway, from the surprise capture of Joe’s Bridge by the Irish Guards a week before the offensive to the final battles on “The Island” south of Arnhem.

Bulge vs. COTA (HTTR info)

Post by Horvo »

I am trying to decide between getting COTA or the Bulge and I have read hints about adapting the HTTR scenarios to the newer Bulge engine, but I haven't been able to find specific information about how this is happening. I have HTTR already but I would like to upgrade the engine if possible. Does anyone know how this is going to work? Is it going to be an add-on? Is it going to be free? Will it change HTTR game play significantly? thanks

Any other comments on preferences between COTA and Bulge would be appreciated as well. Somehow I don't feel like the engine would work as well with the cramped road-based campaign of the Bulge, but maybe I'm wrong.

I do not have the Bulge, but I do have CotA and I can say CotA was great - reports are that what's been added for the Bulge makes it leaps ahead of CotA.

As for the HTTR scenarios - they cannot be import or updated by a user who has the Bulge game - I believe it will be an addon. I doubt it would be free. It may be discounted for owners of HTTR and the Bulge (speculation) or they may just charge it at an addon - I don't believe the word is out yet on how it will work - point being you are not necessarily guaranteed getting the HTTR scenarios free for the Bulge engine just because you bought The Bulge game

I have BftB and I have played a copy of COTA owned by a friend when I visit him.

I would have a hard time adapting to the COTA engine, great as it is, now that I am using BftB.

I think that having to pay for the HTTR scenarios for BftB would be as it should be.  It sounds like a lot of work is going into the port, so this should be worth some additional money.  I mean really, for the  hours spent playing a Game like BftB, it could cost a lot more and still the $/hour would be much lower that many, many other things that people pay far more for.  You should not make these purchase decisions based on how much it costs up front, but of the cost per hour of playing the game over a period of time.

I bought every version and update of TOAW along the way and then I paid Matrix for TOAW III yet again.  Worth every penny and then some.  The cost per hour for TOAW for me must be around, if not below, the $.01 mark.

Just like when I spend $200-300 on Chessbase and Fritz, the cost per hour is really quite low.
