Greek Pack

Command Ops: Battles From The Bulge takes the highly acclaimed Airborne Assault engine back to the West Front for the crucial engagements during the Ardennes Offensive. Test your command skills in the fiery crucible of Airborne Assault’s “pausable continuous time” uber-realistic game engine. It's up to you to develop the strategy, issue the orders, set the pace, and try to win the laurels of victory in the cold, shadowy Ardennes.
Command Ops: Highway to the Reich brings us to the setting of one of the most epic and controversial battles of World War II: Operation Market-Garden, covering every major engagement along Hell’s Highway, from the surprise capture of Joe’s Bridge by the Irish Guards a week before the offensive to the final battles on “The Island” south of Arnhem.

Greek Pack

Post by Arjuna »

Hi all,

We signed off on the first of the COTA packs, covering the Greek battles. Erik has asked if we would consider a better name for the Greek Pack.

Richard suggests "Operation Marita".

Any suggestions.

I would use the word 'Hellenic' instead of Greek. A title like 'Hellenic campaign' might be an alternative? Marita only describes the German name for the operation.

Like Marita more than Hellenic - if just thinking about what might be eye catching. However, Ramses has a point - and there's at least 2 great Italian-Greek scenarios in there, pre-Marita. How about 'The Invasion of Greece.'

I have some bad associations with the name 'Marita', so I guess my opinion is biased. Wasn't there a scenario called ' in the shadow of the Gods' in the original COTA?

That would make for a poetic title, referring to the Greek Gods that were supposed to live on mount Olympus.

'In the shadow of the Gods',

Invasion of Greece 1941

It should focus on catching the attention of your desired market.

Current BftB fans reached via the announcement of a new pack are going to consider buying it regardless of name because it expands their scenario, map, and force options for play. The name for them ends up identifying the file location for their "new" BftB scenarios.

COTA diehards who have not changed to the BftB engine may be intrigued by a title using the COTA / Scenario subset name that offers improved play using the BftB engine. I doubt this is a significant expansion opportunity of the BftB market.

This might also apply slightly to owners of earlier versions of the Panther releases, but if they haven't acted on any of "new and improved" releases by now, I wouldn't expect a significant change in their perspective because of a catchy name.

Grognards who don't own BftB or COTA are going to be intrigued by a combined World War II / Campaign name. That name ought to focus on whether the current World War II wargame marketing base has a larger share of buyers from regions more familiar with Axis or Allied histories of the conflict. My guess is this is the most likely area to expand sales.

After that, the name competes with every "computer game" released into the market. The name needs to catch the attention of users who might consider a wargame, and then BftB as an option for computer gaming without losing the more likely buyers in the process.

Hope this helps.

Take care,

jim

So your suggestions are, Jim?

My suggestion is for those who have the information to lay out the sales and marketing data available, determine from that what the goals are in releasing the pack, and crafting parameters for a name that best addresses their goals in releasing the pack.

For current BftB owners, it's enough to let them know there's a new expansion pack available. Their decision will be based on whether they like the game engine enough to add to their available scenarios with a purchase.

If it's to intrigue COTA owners enough to consider upgrading, the name should identify the pack as a "new and improved" COTA with the purchase of the BftB engine. I would guess that Matrix / Panther have sales data available to determine whether a COTA owner also owns BftB. If a significant enough number of people own COTA but not BftB, that might identify a marketing target for the name, since BftB owners most likely don't care what the name is so long as they know they get more scenarios.

If it's the biggest return on investment to target Grognards who don't own BftB, then identifying the era and campaign might encourage them to expand their wargaming options through the purchase of the basic game and scenario pack with a consideration based on whether the population is more likely to have been taught about World War II from either the Allied or Axis nation perspective. One could guess that British / NATO / Western Europe, Australian / New Zealand, Russian, American, and possibly the Italian / Indian / Chinese / Indonesian / South American customer base would have been made more familiar with the Historical Allied names for the campaign than the Axis names. The opposite would be true for German, and possibly the Japanese customer bases. It's probably a toss up in former Soviet Bloc nations.

I would guess the largest untapped sales potential is with Grognards who don't own the BftB engine, but don't know the market penetration of World War II wargame sales based on former Axis / Allied affiliations determining the historical viewpoint they would be exposed to.
Take care,

jim

I've decided to go with "Command Ops: Battles for Greece" or BFG for short.

Greek Pak (pun intended)might have done.

By the way there is an article on Victor Kislyi (World of Tanks developer) in yesterday's Financial Times (5 June)- not everybody's daily newspaper of choice I realise. Annual sales now 200 million euro. Just bought Australian group Big World for 45 million. Get in quick Dave while they've got their chequebook out.

Are we going to have an option for a BFG-9000 in there? Are you going to go FPS on this one?

It's with Matrix now. So it's not up to me. They have a busy release schedule at the moment (one per week) so they are having to fit it in.
