Objective Taganrog

Post by Phoenix100 »

Just played this through to a marginal victory. Great scenario. I played with 'more supply' for Axis and 'no reinforcements' for Allies, so took options that should have made it easier. However, I'm playing on a modded map that probably makes it quite a bit harder for the Axis. Chris's original map has the Mius (and all 'minor river' layers) as 10% for motorised, whereas I could not believe that the Mius - from looking at photos etc) was fordable by armour (Chris had come across something that suggested it was, I think). So I amended the minor river layer to '0%' for mot and '5%' for foot. This made the Mius a formidable barrier and the 3 bridges crucial. In fact, the crux of the fight was at the Mius River bridge objective. Though I did cross it by 2pm day 1 there was such a bloody fight for it that all my troops, reserves included, were left exhausted. There were counter-attacks throughout day 2, though I managed to break through to Taganrog by midnight day 2. Got all my VPs and took very few losses, but still didn't get a Dec Vic because the Allies hung on to objectives long enough, I suppose. I will try it on normal settings next. Thanks Chris. Recommend this to anyone. It's quite quick, the OOB is easy to get to grips with, the objectives clear. If anyone is interested in the amended map then just PM me and I'll post it, if Chris is ok with that?

Hi Phoenix. That absolutely works for me. I am happy to switch out amended map too on my blog so people can grab it. If you send me the files I will do it. Since I've started creating the EF scenarios I've read about so many battles I can't remember some of what I've read about the river. My recollection is that it fills during the rainy season which begins mid to late fall and makes it impassable but honestly that could describe a lot of Russian/Ukrainian rivers and not be attributable to the Mius. So I appreciate the fix!

And Phoenix if you have time to write up a full time AAR for this scenario or one of my other scenarios I would love to post it on my blog.

mmm. Rainy season. I'd forgot about that. Maybe it should be crossable! I'm sure you did read something and you're right, Chris. It certainly makes the fight for the Mius bridge easier if armour can ford the river, because the AI immediately sends units out to the flanks to cross and attack.

But mostly, in other scenarios in the game, it seemed to me that 'stream' was a crossable layer and 'minor river' generally not to motorised. I loved the scenario. Many thanks. I'll try Tartar Ditch next, I think.
