Players using LCD monitors?

Post by Fred98 »

Anybody playing COTA using a LCD monitor?

If so:

1. What is the native resolution of your monitor?

2. What resolution do you set the game at?

I have a dell notebook (1280x800) and Dell 20" widescreen (1680x1050).  I have the game running natively on both.  It is pretty incredible on the 20".

I'm thinking of hooking my computer to my 52" Sony TV (720p).  It'll be blurry, but I'll definitely get that War Room feel [:D]

I run it on my laptop with a 15" LCD 1024x768, but I prefer to use a VGA cable and display the game on my desktop's 21" CRT via an input toggle switch.

I would provide a word of caution with LCD monitors.....some games run at a resolution of 1024x768 and are fixed at that res.

Unfortunately for me, I have an LCD with a native resolution of 1280x1024 and when I run a game that uses 1024x768 (like Crown of Glory and HoI2) the text is pretty ugly and the general picture is pretty blocky.

I've tried evverything to make these games try to look better on my native 1280x1024 to no avail. In the end, I even dropped Crown of Glory because I just couldn't get passed the interface which looked horrible on my native res...on other monitors it may have looked fine.

Saying that, I would change my LCD...it's bootiful

That's true. LCD:s works fine in one res (mine in 1680 x 1050), but if the games uses another res. it may look like crap. Luckily for me COTA works fine in 1680 x 1050. (And War in Russia looks ugly in whatever res you are using, still it is the best game ever made.)

Very true. WitP is 1024x768 only and looks very so-so on this screen. The devs have to make it a priority as well (like Panther did[8D]

You can't expect magic from you standard 150$ LCD monitor. When you buy one you must make sure it features a good to very good interpolation and supports various aspect ratio settings. Then the native resolution is meaningless and interpolated stuff looks as good as on a CRT. Usually NEC monitors are known for very good interpolation.

As allways buying a monitor is more then just looking for the cheapest thing around, which is for a lot of people the only feature they look at when they buy a monitor. I allways find this amazing since it is the interface between you and your machine.

Granted as a normal user you don't need the 1500$+ monitors I need but a good 500$ - 700$ should be spent at least, doesn't matter if it is CRT or LCD. Also, do you eyes a favor with some extra cash spent [;)]

NEC, do not I repeat do not buy a Dell [;)]

I can also recommend EIZO, might be tad to expensive for a standard consumer though.

And I love my Dell 30-inch 3007. Best monitor I've ever owned. Its native resolution is either 2560x1600 or 1280x800. I play CoTA in 1920x1200 and it looks terrific.

I do wish WiTP were available in a higher resolution, though -- not to mention with widescreen support. But I've beat that dead horse over in the WiTP forum already.

What is it you don't like?

Not known for good pixel interpolation. Colors / Color range.

The "Dell 2005FPW" and the "Dell 2405FPW" are exceptions to that. I think one could recommend those two, but I would make sure to check them out in a shop first, which is hard with a Dell ;)

Check out the website I recommend in the other thread, here is the link to some reviews:

Native 1680x1050 on a 20" Intel iMac. Works a charm [:)]

Now, if I could only beat those darn germans in the "Iraklion Airfield Falls" scenario. I must have played it ten times as Allies already without as much as a hint of overall success [:@]
