Once again - Bombard

Post by JudgeDredd »

Now it's been brought up before many, many times and, I'm afraid on the basis of what I've seen tonight, I have to bring it up again.

I fully understand the argument against allowing bombardment when friendlies are close by...I don't agree, I think the commander should have the ability to drop the ordanance no matter what and with all the effects on his own troops that should occur, but I understand your arguments not to have it.

However, it would be really, really nice if the AI played with the same rules! Iwas trying to drop ordanance (only 3in mortar) on the unit shown and having to move my marker more and more north, eventually being able to drop it so far north of the german unit as to be completely innefective. However, as you can see from the picture, B Company are being effectively bombarded by the Germans. Now that German unit hasn't moved southward for some time, and this is the 3rd time that B Company has come under bombardment, so it's not like the bombard was assigned when the German unit was out of range.

So, if we are not to be allowed bombardment no matter how close to friendlies, could we at least have a level playing field.

As I've said many times before, imposing this restriction almost makes bombardment useless...certainly in this case (dawn and poor light) it is as the German units are closing so close as to make any bombard units for the allies redundant!

Just some thoughts:

Unless you surrender or are using beta cheat tools, there is no way to know exactly where any enemy units are at a given instant with total certainty. So, it is possible that your evaluation of the above situation is inaccurate.

As far as I know, the AI is constrained by the "same friendlies in the way" as the player.

I could maybe swallow that, except there's less than 200 yards difference here...besides, as I pointed out, the Axis artillery is falling constantly. What makes their intel better than mine.

There is, perhaps, a logical explanation...but when something happens for one side and not the other, with no logical reason, it appears something is wrong.

Exactly. That's what I think, and it's right to the point.

On many occasions, in situations like the one displayed above, only small (light?) mortar units may be "able" to drop some shells on such enemy units, while the enemy AI is dropping all kinda ordnance on the opposing friendly unit.

It's somewhat frustrating, and it often negates the efforts for creating defensive lines, if you can't "answer" with your artillery accordingly.
In an effort to halt such an advancing enemy unit, one is usually forced to set all nearby / available bombardment units to rapid fire, in order to rout the enemy unit in question, or to cause as many casualtíes b4 it reaches the inglorious "friendlies in way"-zone.
