In-Situ Defence

Post by Bonxa »

Just got this great game in the weekeng. I can't understand how I missed this one as I remember playing a demo of what must have been RDOA. Maybe I have garnerd a greater interest for operations in preference to tactics over time?

Anyway, as stated at several places one can play this game in many ways with more or less micromanaging. I personally like to command mostly at the battalion level. But in one instance I like to get down and dirty and that is in the setup of defences meant to stay in place for some time. I want to make sure all my coys are in good terrain and perhaps using different formations. Then I have started to give the HQ of the Bn/Rgt a defend in-situ order so as to reduce command load on the supreme HQ.

This has the advantage of placing all units where I wan't them. But then everybody wind up in the defend in-situ formation, there is no retaking of lost ground etc. What do you veterans say? I haven't played much yet so I really don't know how well the AI sets up.

Any takers?

Bonxa,

Can I suggest you experiment with one of the smaller scenarios. Play with no orders delay. Ignore the objectives and just order your Bn or Regt to Defend at certain locations, far away from any enemy, and then see how they deploy. Then try changing the facing and formation and frontage/depth etc. Do this over different types of terrain and note how things go. This will give you a much better feel for how things will shake out. Though remember that once in contact wityh the enemy things will vary somewhat as units may react.

This is just like what a real commander would d - ie. go out an observe how his forces deploy on exercise before committing them to battle. Enjoy. [:)]

Cool idea, taking units on a field exercise before going to battle. [:)]

A more technical thing that I've been thinking of is the actual formation of the coys when first being deployed in say line formation and then get the in-situ defence order. If you check their task it says in-situ formation but I thought it said in the manual that the units would keep their old formation. How does the engine see it?

As line ( or whatever it was before you ordered the in-situ ).
