My first " real " game...Raid on Renkum

Post by Gasbag »

I just scored my first Decisive victory in this one. I thought I was going to get beaten very badly as the computer ( German ) launched a massive attack in the south. I had been expecting one to come from the west/northwest or east/northeast. Guess I should expect the unexpected.[:-] This game is going to take some getting used to. I'm used to micromanaging my forces & have to learn to " trust " the AI.

Good result [:)]. Raid on Renkum is a great little scenario, it's been one of my favourites since it first appeared in RDOA.

As my 2. game, I played the Eindhoven campaign. I was doing great, and was holding son brigde with ease. The focal point of any action during the whole scenario was at st. oederohne (or something, in the middle). Funny since it has no victoy points. However, I was stunned when I suddenly saw a super strong armor group coming in from the NORTH! They whiped through my northern defending forces like hot knife in butter, and suddenly everything was in the wild again! How historical is it that such strong forces w/armor coming from the north? I was under the impression that these would have to come from the south!

Same happened to me [:)], I guess it is elements of XXX corps that had already passed by and responded to the Germans cutting the road

Already passed by? I dont know much about MarkedGarden, but according to the Guide, the Abn landings in the Eindhoven area was to secure the brigdes to facilitate a rapid advance of XXX Corp from the South. Im sure it is a perfectly clear explanation to all this, because I cannot believe this is just AI cheating to give me more of a challenge [:)], because I surely was challenged!

The Germans historically did cut the road for a while and it would be difficult for paras to push them back without Armour my guess is this represents elements of the spearhead coming back to help clear the road

From the strategy guide

"Control of the Highway gave the allies considerable flexibility allowing the redeployment of the Guards as a mobile reserve to deal with the incursion the same time of course it was meant to be spearheading the drive for Arnhem"

It is a bit hard on the German player who gets this force on top of him out of the context of the whole campaign [:(] (darn computer limatations.) But if they ever get co-op play going imagine the fun[:)]

Jalla - I assume you were playing as German in the Eindhoven game?

Those elements are indeed XXX Corps units which historically moved up the road AFTER 101 ABN had secured the road and AFTER the blown Son bridge was repaired. Then, when increased German pressure threatened the supply along the road, some elements of the British forces were indeed moved back down the road to help retake/secure the road.

Now, if you had kept the road blocked, they would have never got to the N of you. But think of this: had the road indeed remained blocked at Son, then on D+2/D+3 you'd have been facing all of XXX Corps, not just a brigade or so (as in the game) attacking north from Eindhoven in order to clear the road. I very, very, very much doubt you'd have stopped them. If you think the Grenadier Guards alone was "super strong".....Guards Armoured has 4 such groups, plus supports.....

Consider yourself lucky Horrocks gave everyone else in XXX Corps a few days off...[;)]

additional: in fact, it might be argued that letting XXX Corps past and then launching a strong attack on the weakly held road was a good ploy to adopt, and might have bagged most of XXX Corps had the Germans been more adventurous - with the flank guard Corps almost immobile for supply shortages, it might have worked for them - no good Guards Armd getting to Arnhem if they're all cut off from the rest of 2(BR) Army [:)]
