Advance on Loenen

Post by Custer1961 »

I have played this 6 times as the Allies against German AI. The best I can do is draw. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to win this one. It is all about speed, speed, speed and my units just cannot get to the objective in time to fight and take it. Also, the German units on the roads seem to be set at delay and continually slow me down. Anybody know of a way to quickly crush an enemy unit set on delay? Frustrating but it sure does make me think.

Forget about the roads and concentrate your forces.

Good luck!

Hi,

I had a lot of trouble with this one as well. It took me three tries - I got it on the third. My trouble sounds the same as yours - I was too timid - or too ambitious, depending on how you look at it.

The first two times, I tried to push through on the road due north, to try to grab both small objectives and then swing into town. I got snarled up and only took one small objective before the game ended.

The third time, I sent two of the battalions to the right with quickest and rapid movement, hit the objective to the south of the town and bulled through. With a few airstrikes available, I hit the Wehrmacht units on the small objective before we arrived, so they were softened a little. The weakest battalion (one landed with casualties) I sent as a diversionary flank way left (west side) to try to get into town from the west. They got mauled and were stopped short of town, but I think it drew some forces away from the town itself, so I'm not sure if that was a good strategy or not.

I left the Regt. HQ and a Company behind at the small objective south of Loenen in case some of the other SS units tried to retake it, but they never even made the effort.

My units were into Loenen before end game - decisive victory.

Now, if I can just win the second scenario... [;)]

Hi Kozure,
You may be a military genius. I have been trying some of your advice and I finally succeeded with the "diversionary" force down the far left road. Although I had fog-of-war on, I think this feint by some of my forces forced the AI of the computer to hold some of its forces to deal with the feint and thus reduce the defense of Loenen. This enabled me to take Loenen close to the end of the scenario. Also, I moved my artillery up so that it could be in ranger of Loenen itself. I saved as much artillery ammo as I could and used the artillery at the end of the scenario on the Germans in Loenen.

This was a great scenario. Really sublime how possibly the most important force (the force that feints down the far left road) is the force that sees the smallest amount of combat. Very, very subtle and truly human like AI in this scenario. For a scenario of such small size, the options were amazing. Made me think and play many times. Great game.

The way I did it in the end was to attack in the centre with one battalion and the regimental hq and assets whilst pushing the other two battalions down the flanks into positions to attack (move order, min aggro, covered route). Once in position order the attack (doesn't matter which gets in position first, just order the attack as soon as they're there) and bingo! victory!! Occasionally you might find one of the bns runs into a German unit and the final assault could fail, but nine times out of ten this works. You could also just order he regiment to attack Loenen with maximum aggro and sit and watch as you achieve a 'marginal' but this does rather defeat the object of playing the game[;)]
