Bump in the Road - PI on the Popenberg

Post by Shadow of the Condor »

Hi all.

Actually, my second AAR post here (first was as Attack Condor, till the hacker chopped the name). My first was Advance on Loenen (which I failed miserably) and taking a break from UV I fired up HttR and re-ran the tutorials. I almost forgot how much fun this is!!

So, my little entry into the AAR world. Nothing spectacular, playing the Germans vs. the Dutch in this scenario. I get the feeling that two SS Panzer companies had better not let a Dutch Brigade stand in their way. The artillery was very nice to have (especially the NW) as well!

So a short summary with a couple of screenshots.

The second Panzer company starts on the east of the Reichs Wald, just begging to be led through the woods and attacking Popenberg from the south. I decided to go this one better. I sent them into the woods, and south across the canal. Then west to the highway and then northwest to just short of Mook. They then got off the highway and paused at the edge of the woods and got their bearings. All of this was accomplished within 2 hours.

Meanwhile, the German Pumas reconned north along the rail line towards Groesbeek. Finding no opposition, they continued into the woods, stopped, and did a 180 degree turn facing east. They then exited again towards Groesbeek, and moved southwest along the woods towards Popenberg.

The first Panzer company drew the short straw and played the stalking horse, advancing southwest along the Wald to the edge of the polder and then northwest to engage the Dutch recon unit. The recon unit put up quite a fight, but the massed artillery and tanks eventually forced it off of its position. After reforming, the first Panzer company reformed and made the push east towards Popenberg...

Continuing on...(sorry about the double pic post...still getting the hang of this)

With the Dutch caught between two panzer companies, the outcome wasn't in doubt. The appearance of a dozen Shermans caused a few casualities, but they too were beaten off. Troops reported the objective secured at 1349. By 1700 we had established a defensive perimeter, and the Dutch launched a few half-hearted attempts at retaking the hill, but to no avail.

I'm sure this strategy isn't new, but it was for me. A great little scenario for an evening's fun. Perhaps next time the Germans should have their supplies diverted elsewhere...

Nice work - good tactical deception and very historical infiltration tactics for the Germans!

Thanks! I am looking to do another AAR, this time from a company commander's perspective with more narrative into the storyline. I haven't given that project up!!
