Thinking of buy it but have questions

Post by Larac »

IN the campaings, do you keep damag, death of piolts, and such from game to game or is it all back to the start each time.

Not sure if what I am asking makes sense.

In some games you always have full units and a death of a unit matters little, in others you have to watch what you do or you become too weak to win the war.

Also how fast paced is it, will you get through a battle in an hour or does it take longer?

And most of all is it fun to play, with that how tough is the learning curve?

thanks for any and all answers

In campaigns, you make a squad. The status of the squad is saved after a mission. That includes damage taken, experience and dead jocks. Damage can be repaired at the factory module of the game, it costs the squad money. Experience points is converted to development points which can be used to raise the stats of the jocks, kind of like an RPG. So yeah, damage and death of units is relevant to the progression of the game. In fact, one dead jock can mean a whole world of crap that ejecting to save the jock is usually more worthwhile than trying to save the Titan-AT.

I don't know about the pace as I am not really a fan of wargames, I am more into squad-level games. The pace can be fast or slow depending on how you play the game. It's usually slow because you can go into all sorts of detail of what you do game second by game second, especially if you are trying to choreograph a beautifully coordinated attack of two squads with 8 titans each against an opponent equal tonnage.

I find it very fun to play, but this is highly subjective. I have been playing this game for over almost over a year now and I still have fun playing it.

The learning curve is quite difficult. Probably because there is no contemporary game that plays like it. Once you get past the uniqueness, you'll find that the controls are quite easy, especially with the hotkeys.

There is a large measure of role-playing in the game. You have the members of your team, with their real names and their nicknames, and developing them into better combatants is half the fun. One of my mates (because I'm in there as the leader of the squad, of course) goes down in battle, and I feel it like a personal blow. I didn't find the learning curve too bad, but many newcomers have, so there's a chance you'll be asking questions here on the forum. The timing system is explained in one of the stickied threads, and it's a must-read. I haven't played too many of the campaigns, but there's carry over even if you're just bringing your squad through random one-off missions.

I don't find the game particularly fast, as my current battles last me a few hours (usually over 2 or 3 game sessions), but it is very fun and involving.

Actually that depends on the Campaign... When designing the mission I can choose that Defeat means eitehr "saving the squad and continuing to the next map" or "reset back and restart map". I personally prefer to create Campaigns with the "reset back and restart map" option.

I've had fights as short as 30 minutes and as long as 8+hours spead over weeks (I like to put in 30 minutes at lunch when at work.)

I came from the BattleTech board game world so to me this is a fun as it gets... Yes, there is a learning curve (as is in any complex game) but these forums are very helpful if you have any questions.
