RE: The Wanderers - Rookie AAR
Although it's difficult to work out exactly why it's happening, I'm a bit worried about the financial problems the team is having, despite a reasonable record.

Nice AAR!
We're at the ranks that I usually run tight with the cashflow myself. Only advice I can give is to keep a minimum in inventory until the situation improves and to take a good look at the salaries of your jocks, especially the higher ranked ones. You may have to start building up thier bussiness skill just to bring thier salaries down.
Not sure why this happens to me at these ranks, but at very low ranks and higher ranks (~Crack?) the money situation seems to be much easier to handle. Maybe because I can neglect bussiness skill up to this point?

Sleeping Dragon; thanks for the advice. I think you're right, I'm better off selling machines than keeping them mothballed ... it'll be interesting to see how my Upkeep goes down. I'll watch for the business skills, too.
RE: The Wanderers - Rookie AAR
(Assuming same rank same tonnage battles)
Notice that Payment is always ~125k, regardless of your squad's tonnage or average rank. So in the beginning, it is enough to cover your Upkeep and give you profit, while Salvage roughly covers Repairs (if the battle doesn't go wrong). But a time will come when your Upkeep will be over 125k.
Maximize your Salvage (efficient disabling), minimize your Repairs (avoid explosions, you lose too many titans), minimize your Upkeep. A good Manager and Mechanic (Payment and Salvage, repairs), and eventually increasing Business for all jocks like already mentioned, all help.
As your squad's tonnage increases, Salvage will increase, BUT so will Repairs AND Upkeep. Heavier weight classes will raise Upkeep considerably.

Thanks, Thorgrim. I should probably have kept them in recons longer, to build up some capital .. the repair costs of lights is already ruinous.

Now you tell me! I just recovered a light in my first battle and was looking forward to using it. Might have to sell it for scrap now. [:D]

You know, you'd think that if they're good businessmen they'd talk themselves into higher salaries, not lower ones o_o

I guess you could argue that you are saving all that money on starship passenger fees or some such as I believe that you are shuttling around the galaxy for each mission.
RE: The Wanderers - Rookie AAR
I don't see it as a regular salary (which is usually a fixed amount per month, not variable), but rather as the resources the unit has to spend to keep the jocks combat ready and up-to-date in tech and warfare stuff, etc. If they can get better deals and discounts, their "upkeep" is lower.

RE: The Wanderers - Rookie AAR
Elmo3 .. something else to watch for .. I only just realised it myself while doing these AARs: when you've finished a battle, don't carry out your repairs immediately. Go to the Headquarters and improve your jocks first, in case the improvements lead to lower repair bills.
RE: The Wanderers - Rookie AAR
Hmm, of course. Just like in the beginning you only buy your titans after recruting and developing the manager.

RE: The Wanderers - Rookie AAR
Battle 30: Small savannah arena; novice opponents.
The team started in the east. Morag jumped to check the terrain and found that they would have to cross a lot of flat space, with only a few scattered hills, to get to the west where she saw occasional recon titans. The team headed south and west (below a short line of hills), going towards a GM titan crouching on a wooded hill; they ran through cover as much as possible. Somewhere hidden, an enemy titan was repeatedly falling down; sweet sounds echoing across the plain.
A Will-o’-Whisp and a Rogue ran towards them. They kept losing contact with the enemy; only Morag got a decent green scan on a distant Fang (recon with two Auto 7s). The Gremlin started to run down the hill when they were about 8 hexes away .. they started to run at it .. but where were the Will-o’-Whisp and Rogue?
Morag tried to jump over a hill onto the Gremlin, but it ran out from under her. Although she landed ok, she was knocked down by one of the Gremlin’s GME’s a moment later. The team were now in a little cluster of hills; if Morag could get up and into safety, they should be able to ambush their enemy one by one as they came through the hills.
Before she could stand, a GME from the Gremlin caught her titan in the head, and Morag was knocked unconscious. She took a lot more damage from the other enemy titans clustered at the bottom of the hills until her engine was so badly damaged that, when she woke, she wasn’t able to stand. She ejected safely.
Gerda and Lisa quickly brought down and disabled the Gremlin, but the Rogue was now in the next hex to Gerda, so they retargeted. It charged her and they both fell. Meanwhile, Harry, who had been sent around the back of the hills in the optimistic early minutes of the battle, came back into the fray and headed for the Rogue. A couple of GMEs and Gerda’s beamers (fired while she was on the ground) and the Rogue lost an arm and fell. Gerda stood. A Jackal had just climbed the hills next to Lisa, so she targeted it, leaving the Rogue to Harry, who chopped off a leg.
The Jackal jumped Lisa successfully, but she stayed on her feet, and it fell to the ground, losing a leg. A Porcupine climbed the hill to take its place. A lucky BRG shot from Gerda and some of the Porcupine’s SRMs exploded, knocking it to the ground. When Lisa moved into the hex, her SRMs blew off the Porcupine’s leg .. so they turned on a Firefly that had climbed the adjacent hill and was taking shots at them. A combination of SRMs and beamers took out its lower torso.
There were two support titans about five hexes away taking shots at them, a Fang and a Will-o’-Whisp .. Lisa had a yellow scan on the Fang; it was probably the titan that they had heard falling down earlier, as it had quite a bit of yellow damage. The team members turned to run into the hills, to get away from the still active fallen titans and to approach the remaining two titans more closely. Unluckily, Gerda was brought down by cannon fire and lost a leg before she could get going. She ejected safely.
As they ran behind the hills, the Fang appeared a couple of hexes away. Lisa put a full load of SRMs into it. Another full load and it fell, with its right arm removed. Harry started up the hill; Lisa turned towards the approaching Will-o’-Whisp. Harry soon removed an arm and a leg and turned towards the WoW, too. It was backing away. When Lisa got into its hex, she hit it with more SRMs .. but it was the punch that knocked an arm off and knocked it down. When Harry arrived, his GMEs took off a leg. They moved away to avoid damage from the fallen titan.
Success! They were offered a titan, but took the money instead.
Harry was raised to novice.
Salvage $94,885 + Payment $125,000 - Upkeep $95,091 = $124,794
Lisa improved her Charisma (for her Leadership).
(Leader) Lisa: Pilot 70/70, Scout 65/65; UGM 70/70, CC 66/66, Indirect Fire 65/65; Leadership 69/71, Survival 63/63, Scan 56/56, Electronics 30/60, Defensive 38/68, Business 11/63.
(Engineer) Morag: Pilot 63/63, Jump 63/63, Scout 71/71; CC 72/73, Cannon 56/61; Damage Control 58/58, Survival 73/73, Scan 53/53, Defensive 53/61, Business 35/53.
(2nd Engineer) Gerda: Pilot 68/68, Jump 39/68, Scout 51/51; Energy 71/71, CC 57/58; Damage Control 58/58, Scan 55/55, Electronics 46/53, Business 25/51, Survival 50/50
Harry improved his Intelligence (for his Business skill)
(Businessman) Harry: Pilot 60/60, Jump 48/60, Scout 33/61; GM 67/68, CC 52/56; Business 68/71, Survival 53/56,
Scan 39/63.
Repairs cost $164,015, so they made a loss again, but, with Harry’s improved business skill, perhaps not as bad as it could be. They sold a Mirage, making their final budget $204,357.

The Wanderers are now ranked Regular.
Battle 31: Small Biochem arena; Regular opponents.
They ran along the southern border towards a cluster of hills, spotting a medium Hydra and a Mangler heading towards the same hills from the other side. Lisa and Gerda were ahead of the two CC titans; LoS was continually being broken among the hills.
The Hydra popped out of cover into the hex next to Lisa and Gerda. ... and now another Hydra was air dropped into Morag’s hex, two hexes behind Lisa and Gerda .. Morag was already running out of the hex ... it landed just after she left.
The Mangler joined the first Hydra. The Hydra started to run into the hex where Lisa, Gerda and now Harry were standing. Morag arrived a few moments later. Gerda managed to bring the Hydra down, so Harry and Morag started to run into its hex to get to work with their CC weapons. The Mangler had also been running and charged Lisa .. but fell .. so Morag aborted her run out of the hex so she could work on the Mangler.
The Hydra stood up, but was brought down again by Lisa’s SRMs and Gerda’s BRG.
The Mangler now stood and quickly brought down Lisa, despite good Axe work by Morag. ... and the other Hydra now ran into the hex and brought down Gerda.
Harry arrived at the downed Hydra, and after firing his GMEs and using his Axes, brought it down again with a kick.
He kept knocking it down as it tried to stand.
Gerda and Lisa stood; they and Morag worked on the Mangler, ignoring the Hydra also in the hex with them. It fell down when Gerda’s BRG hit its lower torso .. with the other two helping keep it down. Morag eventually disabled the Mangler and the three ran to the hex that Harry was in, to avoid fighting the downed Mangler’s weapons while they fought the second Hydra.
Harry put his Axe into the downed Hydra’s centre back torso and apparently hit its engine, for it exploded. Harry was stunned by the explosion, while his three team mates in the next hex were also badly hit: Lisa was stunned, Gerda took medium damage to her engine. Moments later, her centre torso was disabled by a Chain Saw strike from the Hydra in her hex. The others changed their plan to draw the battle away from the downed Mangler, and aborted their runs (the Mangler jock ejected seconds later, anyway).
Harry ran to rejoin his friends; he found that his accuracy was down, because of overheating following the explosion. Morag was downed by the Hydra’s Chain Saws. She stood eventually, but her right torso was disabled. As a last resort, she jumped and dropped in a successful DfA attack. She fell, but she knocked off the Hydra’s leg in the attack. The Hydra jock ejected.
Success! .. but probably with very damaging repair bills.
They were offered a Hydra or only $19,492 .. they took the titan .. surely, even after repairs, they would be able to make a profit on it?
Salvage $16,423 + Bounty $16,000 + Payment $100,000 - Upkeep $93,596 = $38,827.
Why had their payment dropped by $25,000? It barely covered the team’s upkeep.
After adjusting their skills, they sold the two mothballed titans so they would have enough to pay for their repairs.
Balance before repairs: $386,667
Repairs: $274,947
Final balance: $111,720. The repaired Hydra is currently worth $96,878.

Battle 32: small polar arena; regular opponents.
Lisa got a green scan on a Hipshot about 8 hexes away (100 tons - 2 Auto 20s, medium laser, small laser). She and her team mates ran behind some hills, hoping to catch it on its own. They settled in cover. When the Hipshot appeared about 8 hexes away, Lisa started to put SRMs into it. Then, when it had targeted her, Harry and Morag started to run towards it. At a break in his run, Harry hit it with two GMEs (from two hexes away) and brought it down. .. but it got up again just before Morag got to it. Morag took two punches to the head and lost 14 hit points. However, she brought the Hipshot down again with her Axes. When Harry arrived, they removed the Hipshot’s leg.
Harry and Morag started to run for a Raccoon that was approaching. As the downed Hipshot was still firing its Auto 20s, Gerda fired her CLG and BRG at it ... hit its centre back torso, and blew it up .... not again, don't they bother to shield the engines on these things! Morag and Harry were knocked dizzy, Gerda lost 24 points from damage to the head and fell in a patch of burning woodland.
Harry and Morag turned towards the Raccoon. It swiftly brought Harry down with its BRG. Morag ran towards it ... and the Raccoon ran past her into Harry’s hex. Harry had trouble getting up and his titan’s head was damaged. With the Raccoon’s attacks, he decided to eject. He was injured in the eject, but survived.
Meantime, Lisa had run up and was putting SRMs into the Raccoon; Gerda at last ran out of her burning hex into the Raccoon’s hex and put it down with her beamers. Gerda and Morag started to run out of that hex towards the remaining enemy titan, a Tracker, and Lisa started to run around the Raccoon. Its machine guns were still effective and had injured Gerda during her run.
Gerda was the first to see and be seen by the Tracker, but the heavy cover protected her from being hit. Morag was not so lucky; she was brought down by a GME Lisa ran up and started to put SRMs into the retreating Tracker .. she drew the fire away from Morag. And then Gerda appeared through the trees and brought it down with her beamers. Lisa and Gerda kept it down while Morag approached, getting a yellow scan as she came. Carefully she placed her Axe on the Tracker’s damaged right leg and lopped it off.
Success .. of a sort ... but wait for the bill.
Salvage $75,590 + Bounty $16,000 + Payment $125,000 - Upkeep $86,834 = $129,756
Repairs cost $124,896, so a slight profit.
Total budget: $116,580 .. even with the explosion .. have they turned the financial corner?

Maybe you accidently hit the wrong rank for the enemy? Also note that the average rank of your squad is caluclated slightly differerently between the HQ and the Battle modules (I've been told that the Battle module calculations also takes into account the size of your titans, among other things). So it's possible you used the rank from the HQ and the battle used the average rank from the battle module.

Don't repair salvaged titans if you're not going to use them. You're wasting money, as your mechanic's skill is below 70%. Sell them as they are.
Also, only repair them right before using them in battle. Keep your money in your budget instead of spending it on something you won't use immediately.

RE: The Wanderers - Rookie AAR
Thanks, Thorgrim; I'd not thought about keeping damaged titans in my inventory .. would they need reduced upkeep?
RE: The Wanderers - Rookie AAR
The Wanderers went bankrupt after a few more battles. The jocks have gone into retirement until another team can afford to take them on. The new team, the Triturators, are up to their tenth battle, and have almost 3/4M in their account.
Larkin, may I suggest that the Payment made to the teams be linked to either their skill level or to the total weight of the titans in the team taking part in the battle .. because the cost of repairs (and Upkeep) increases as the titan size increases, but Payment stays the same. The only way the excess can be made up is with increased salvage and bounty.

RE: The Wanderers - Rookie AAR
Just for completeness' sake, here are the Wanderers final battles before the team breaks up and its jocks are reassigned:
Battle 33: Small biochem arena; regular opponents (Seven recons: Thorn, Porcupine, Swift Death, two Gauntlets, Club, Mosquito)
They spotted a Gauntlet something over ten hexes away. Lisa got a green scan ... it had a heavy meson gun, machine gun, power axe, vibraclaw. The team moved closer to the hills to break LoS, hoping to make a quick, overwhelming, simultaneous near and close attack. They lost contact, but a Swift Death, Thorn and Porcupine appeared. The team decided to move along a nearby valley, hoping to draw the opponents in one at a time.
The Swift Death was first to approach to the adjacent hex. Lisa hit it with a lot of SRMs, but it didn’t fall. When it ran into Lisa’s hex, she brought it down with more missiles, and Harry disabled both torsos with his CC weapons.
After that it got extremely messy, mostly fighting in close quarters or one hex away. Morag was downed by a Thorn, and had to eject as it continued to put GMs into her titan, but the others finished the enemy off without losing any limbs.
They were awarded a Gauntlet. Lisa was raised to Veteran.
Salvage $48,258 + Bounty $18,000 + Payment $125,000 - Upkeep $87074 = $104,184

Battle 34: small polar arena; regular opponents.
The team managed to settle in a valley, enclosed by swamps and hills and waited for the Porcupine, Badger and Shadow that approached.
Unfortunately a Stinger and Dagger air-dropped onto their “protected” positions.
Morag let herself be distracted from the approaching Porcupine by the Stinger coming down onto the hill in the next hex, and was brought down by the Porcupine’s SRMs. She took enough damage from the Stinger and the Badger that she had to eject ... taking no damage.
Lisa brought the Porcupine down with her SRMs before targeting the Shadow standing over Morag’s titan.
The battle became messy in close quarters, with four titans disabled in a single hex, with three enemy titans around the team members who were concentrating on the near and close quarters battles in the centre.
The team suffered a lot of damage from downed enemy titans .. in future they would either have to make sure of them (a dangerous business, as they’ve learned with the effects of Morag’s Axes on enemy engines), or move the fight away from any disabled but still active enemies.
Harry also ejected, and Lisa had to resort to charging one of her two remaining enemies, before shooting off one of its legs with her SRMs.
Three of the team had ejected, but they had disabled a Dagger, a Dart, a Badger, a Porcupine and two Shadows.
The remaining Stinger offered a draw, which Lisa accepted.
Payment $125,000 - Upkeep $87,786 = $37214
They sold the damaged Gauntlet to help pay for repairs: even with that, they could only afford to repair Morag’s Axeman and Lisa’s Needler.

Battle 35: Small Savannah arena: Lisa and Morag against regular opponents
They came through hills about 3 hexes from a heavy Aggressor, sitting on a small hill. They ran and dodged towards it. Morag moved into close quarters, and took the damage, while Lisa stood in the next hex, pumping SRMs into the enemy. They brought it down in time, cutting off a leg, with Morag only taking damage to external armour.
(No salvage!) Payment $100,000 - Upkeep $85,128 = $14,872
They had to sell the spare titan (a Hydra) to pay for repairs, leaving them with budget of $62,521

Battle 36: small terran arena; Lisa and Morag against regular opponents.
They spotted a light titan 16 hexes or so away, which Morag identified as a Savage, eventually getting a green scan (Black Ray Gun, GME and Chain Saw). By that time, it had spotted Lisa, brought her down with the BRG and hit her with the GME. She got up and started to run closer.
An Apparition was air dropped about five hexes from Morag, but she had learned her lesson and continued to run towards the Savage. Morag closed on the Savage and Lisa stayed in the next hex. Morag’s titan took damage from the BRG and Chain Saw and fell. The Savage was taking a lot of damage (it lost its left arm), but didn’t fall.
The Apparition moved into Morag’s hex and immediately damaged her titan with its Chain Saws. Her titan quickly lost an arm and a leg, and she ejected. Lisa blew a leg off Morag’s first opponent before shifting to the Apparition. She hit it with a lot of missiles but it continued to run at her. When it reached her, it downed her with a Chain Saw to the lower torso; another to her titan’s head knocked her unconscious. Her titan was quickly disabled.
Defeat.
Payment $100,000 - Upkeep $77,631 = $22,369
Budget $84,870 Not enough to repair Gerda’s Frostbite, which might have been suitable for solo battles.
The Wanderers are retired, their jocks available for inclusion into other teams.

Depending on how much a glutton for punishment you are.... Fire a jock or two, and partially repair the Frostbite as well as you can and take it into battle. Might get lucky[;)]

RE: The Wanderers - Rookie AAR
You seem to have chronic financial problems. You should really try minimizing the damage you do to the enemy... take off a leg or a gyro and ignore the enemy's persistent fire while down. You should get bigger salvage that way.
