WiR on Linux

Post by TJD »

I'm spending a lot of time on Linux these days and WiR runs well in DosBox for Linux. Good wargames for Linux are in short supply so I'm wondering if this old classic is still worth my time or if it's just too old and far-gone now. I don't mind the old graphics, I just wonder if the system is worth the effort.

I appreciate your thoughts...

Thanks,

Tim

I am still running WIR with DOSBox, also the stable-mate 'Western Front', which is earlier with even older graphics than WIR, but can be updated to at least WIR standards.

I think there is still value in the games, even though they are dated, as the game scale is more realistic than the more up-to-date WITE (no single commander ever had control of hundreds of units down to sub-division scale). The Korps/Army level of WIR is about right for the vast Eastern Front and the unit plotting WEGO system is more realistic, if a little clunky these days.

Using the WIRhack utility allows you to moderate the otherwise inevitable effects of the collapse of the Mediterranean Front and other events.

Screen shots show how 'Western Front' can look and WIR maps and icons have mods available, although 'Piercing Fortress Europa' (Matrix) might provide a good, more modern replacement in the WEGO style of play in the WIR/WF unit scale and is promising to develop into other theatres, from the Sicily/Italian Front that the first issue covers.

Thanks for the reply! I've played WITE but became confused with all the patching and decided to let the game rest until 2.0 comes out. I was attracted by the larger scale of WiR and thought it might be a a sort of Linux alternative in the meanwhile. You mention various mods for WiR and also the "WiRHack" utility. Can you tell me where I can find these?

Thanks!

Here is the WIR changelog file, with all the information files use with caution, some of it goes way back. The official Manual never went further than ver. 1.0, however the game was significantly modified with versions up to ver. 2.0, Matrix took over and it reached ver.3.3, so some items may not apply to the latest game.
