Please help: Editor Questions

Post by The Oak »

I tried to use the editor to create a new tank (the Brumbar from Grigsby's Western Front). I saved it under "SCENA", however it didn't show up in the equipment pools when I went to play the game. The editor also didn't allow me to specify a side for any new tanks. The map editor also loaded a distorted map when I went to load the map from my saved "SCENA." I couldn't find any info in the PDF manual included with WIR 2.1. Any information on how to use the editor to create new tanks/edit maps would be appreciated.

Sorry, but I don't think that editor had any capability to add tanks and assign them to a side, although the information is buried somewhere in the data, I am sure. The only solution, unless you can hack the data with a hex editor, is to replace a tank like the R35 with the Brumbar. I am not sure on what to do on the map editing. I don't know if the release included the map editor or not.

Sorry I couldn't help more.

Ok, Oak are you aware this was done some time ago by someone making an unoffical update? I don't have it any more, and can't off the top of my head tell you where to look, but spend some time searching the net and you might come across this modified version (OBWIR and the tank graphics file were modified, the EXE didn't need to be modified).

RickyB is right, they had to use an existing tank slot, so they did exactly what RickyB said: they replaced the R35 with their Brummbar. In their modified version the R35 was still there, but had no tank picture for it. I can't help you anymore, but to say what your trying to do *is* doable. Good luck.

Believe me, I've been looking for years for exactly the mod you were descibing (improved graphics and additional vehicles). I finally thought my prayers were answered when WIR v2.1 was released........ If anyone knows where to find the previous mod, please let me know. I'm also looking for Grigsby's Western Front (Can you imagine the 2 games combined + N. Africa???? It would be unbelievable!)

One thing that you gotta watch, at least in the old version, is that the game engine ASSUMES that vehicles in certain ID ranges belong to one side or the other.

I never tried editting the tank or airplane pictures, but I did try creating additional artillery weapons and they simply never worked well. So the Germans get about 25 slots for tanks and then the next 25 slots are Russian, etc. Then armored cars, Flak, Pak, and field artillery are somehow SHARED between the two sides. I'm not sure what the game engine will do if you create a supposed tank with an ID# higher than 62 (and below 100). It might get produced, and tie up a factory, but never show up in a German pool or be passed on to any unit as reinforcements.

Oak,
the mod was created by Jean-Claude Lorusso.
It featured the brumbar, along with numerous new ground units and a new city on the map to fight over (Nikopol). I think it's one of the best add ins I've played Image

Version 3 was the last one - its called OB3.ZIP and it's available from :

ftp://ftp.thegamers.net/pub/patches/pc- ... e-patches/

if you have any probs let me know and I'll forward a copy

Pierre

P.S. I haven't tried it with the Matrix
version of WIR

I tried OB3 with WIR 2.1 and it appeared to work OK (you have to load SCEN J). The Brumbar was the only new AFV, and the AFV graphics appeared the same aside from the added Brumbar graphic. The new ground units were in name only (i.e., some of the Arty units are now called Siege Arty, or Nbl Arty, although they are no different than the previous units). None the less, it's a refreshing change, if only a small one.

I really wish the resolution of the map and graphics would be improved slightly, as the current/old resolution setting causes an eye strain after a while. The weapons encyclopedia AFV graphics from SPWAW would also look nice in WIR for the AFV display.

I attempted to do what was suggested before: Edit only one of the existing AFVs (as this has been allocated to only one side). I attempted to add the hypothetical Panther Ausf. F (available 1/45) in place of the Jpz-I, however this made the game crash when I went to re-load the scenario. I also still can't use the map editor to add a city or terrain feature to exixting maps. Is it at all possible to do this with the editor?

Using OB3 means you're missing out on all of the updates and improvements v2.x provides. Also, the current beta is no longer compatible with the older scenario files, so I'm pretty sure you couldn't use OB3 with the current WIR executable.

That will have to wait for Matrix's full remake of WIR, I'm afraid.

Its possible with editwir.exe I believe, I've never tried.

How do you use the map editor? I try to load my SCENA map that I'm working on, however it loads all scrambled. I only wanted to add a few cities..........

Also: Is it possible to change the PICS for a vehicle slot? My Panther F tank in the second slot has the original graphic rather than a Panther graphic. I know it's probably not possible to change...........

Oak,

going back over some old Genie messages , I think you have to delete an old city before you can add a new one.

Bear Yeager did the modified maps for OB3.

If you want to read some of these old posts (includes the development of OB1 and OB2, some strategy hints & tips and more)the zipped file is available from

I tried mapper.exe on the latest sf.map, and it worked fine, so it may be something that will clear itself up with the next release.
