Battle of the titans

Post by DavidFaust »

K62 messaged me and we started a game with me playing as Germany. Having not played for over 10 years will make it a interesting game.

Germany has just completed turn 8. Germany's performance to date has been poor as they are making an endless amount of avoidable mistakes. It will take some time to loosen up the rusty joints and remove the cobwebs!!

AGN & AGS conducted minor operation while they reset and refit.

AGC Launched its attack in the Vitebsk area encircling the city and 5 korps. The attacks to capture the city and encircled troops was repulsed.

Having troubles taking screenshots as all files are to big.

I am do not know why the screen shot is so big on this post.

Any ideas?

Here's the Vitebsk maneuver from German turn 8. Several armies are surrounded with minimal hope of relief and also a shock army shattered in the fighting. The only silver lining for the Soviets is that the resistance of the Vitebsk garrison prevented some rail line conversion this turn.

If you use Ctrl-F5 for the screenshots I find they're not that big. Otherwise you may need to use an image editor like Paint to scale them down.

We're currently on turn 8, here are the first five turns. I have a hazy recollection that my standard defense method back in the day was: retreat to the Dnepr with weak mechanized corps fighting a suicidal rearguard action. This part seemed to work OK. I don't really remember much about the northern sector but tried to set up a road block around Pskov. Ultimately this did slightly delay the Germans but those troops get surrounded turn 6 and surrender turn 7. So that's probably not the optimal play in opposing AGN.

I was not able to take screenshots using Ctrl-F5.

It has been a huge relearning curve coming back to the game after so many years. I will list some points where Germany has fallen short.

Air force has been set up incorrectly and this is currently being addressed. Some things can simply not be undone.
Failure to correctly set up panzer and INF korps.
Failure to set up assault korps for specific objectives.
Reserves left in pools and not sent to the front.
Failure to rail move reserve divisions to the front.
Issuing orders in the incorrect order. Example... Moving HQ's prior to launching air missions. Moving korps and blocking troops that are plotting.
Not setting HQ's replacement level higher than 50%.
Running low on OP points.
Not recalling how rail conversion works.
Not having clear and defined objectives.

My biggest concern is how to fight in the blizzard as I remember blizzard is brutally unforgiving.

Germany's main effort this week was launched in the south.
Panzer formations in the Kiev area along with Pz formations west of Dnep launched a attack with the objective of encircling the Soviet formations defending the river line. The river crossings east of Kiev failed to close the pincer.

AGC mopped up the encircled troops around Vitebsk and advanced east wards.

AGN are slowly advancing waiting for the INF korps to reach the front lines.

The Ctrl-F5 captured images are saved in a folder. Under Windows the default is

%userprofile%\AppData\Local\DOSBox\capture

It can be changed in the configuration file.

Due to K62 and myself being very rusty at the game we both decided to restart.

Due to the PBEM bug Germany reloaded her 1st turn. Doing this has resulted in missing airfield attack reports and will reduce total Soviet plane losses.

I have decided not to bang on and just show screen shots.

After a disastrous battle on the frontiers resulting in the destruction of numerous divisions, the Soviet 2nd echelon regroups to attempt defense of the Dnepr river line. Strong Axis armored forces are reported in position to attack Pskov, Vitebsk, Mogilev and/or Kiev next week. Will the hastily entrenched positions hold? With many of our best tank divisions already destroyed and the Red Air Force on a crash training course in Siberia the outcome seems doubtful. But we will at least make the fascist invaders pay in blood for each kilometer.

The one bright spot is in the extreme north where the Leningrad Front has seemingly stopped the Finns on the Saimaa canal line. They've only engaged in a few bombing raids this week and did not attempt a river crossing. Hopefully the situation continues as our troops work hard at entrenching this strong natural position.

House rules:

1. A unit can not change HQ's if it has received special supply.
2. A target may only be bombed 3 times. Failed attempts do not count.
3. The soviet HQ ́s at 3 hexes (or less) from the east border are in Siberia and cań't be air attacked. The air units in these HQ ́s can ́'t fight, they must be in training mode.
4. Finns can't move south of hex (39,5) until Leningrad falls. Then Finns can move as far south as Novgorod. (No limits east or west.)

A very aggressive plan was put forward to high command that involved transferring Pz divisions to different Pz korps. The uncertainty of the Pz divisions arrival in battle was a risk to great. AGC instead launched a limited offensive in the Mogilev sector with the objective of capturing a bridgehead over the Dnieper.
