Blizzard turns

Post by Joe Kemper »

I played this game several years ago and am glad to see its back and improved.

My question concerns the effect the blizzard turns have on the Germans. From memory I can't recall the best defense. I was playing 1941,v. 2.1+, human v. human (me v. me). I was able to advance the Germans almost to their historical position when the blizzard hit in mid-December. As the Russian player I decided to advance along the entire front
(even after suffering tremedous losses during the summer). By the end of Feb, with continous blizzard turns I was able to push the Germans back to their June starting positions. I don't know if its because I have forgotten the appropriate defense or there is something new in 2.1+. Any general tips would be appreciated.

PS: This may have already been reported but I noticed combination Russian and Italian designations on the Russian pool and unit displays for the tanks. Ex. T34 M40

Thanks again for reviving this great game.

Hi Joe,

Regarding blizzards, the Axis lose fewer squads than they used to, so that should make them tougher. On the other hand, they will continue to lose equipment when they move into early 1942, which I think is a change for the worse. Overall about the same. It could be that with weaker airpower overall and the Soviets having more planes that this allows the Soviet attacks to lose fewer men and thus continue longer, but I am still amazed that with just infantry and shock armies that the Axis could be pushed so far back in just 2 1/2 months or 10-11 turns.

On the Soviet tank designations, the M40 or similar entries are to indicate the 1940 model tank, rather than the main gun size and the /A or /C or whatever was used.

Rick, thanks for the reply and explanations. I have started my second game and I'm near the end of July and seem to be doing much better at making sure my units don't end up in zero supply situations, which really weakened the Germans by mid-Dec in my first game. Also I think I may have moved them too often during blizzard turns trying to stay ahead of the Russian offensive.

Thanks for the explanation on the tank designations.
