Feature Request: Revamp Diplomacy

Post by Plotnik »

Hello Matix Games,

I've been frustrated with the diplomacy system since Distant Worlds 1, and it has never really been reworked. It's nice that we can now at least see the total value of trade offers, but I believe there is much more potential for improvement and expansion of diplomacy options.

Fundamentally, the game considers empire size and strength in its calculations, which lowers the relationship value. However, this should also influence demands. That means that even if relations are poor, weaker empires should be more inclined to comply with the demands of stronger ones.

This brings me to the second major issue: why are trade options displayed so arbitrarily and only with good relations? Of course, in Distant Worlds 1, trade was sometimes abused to greatly improve finances. But in Distant Worlds 2, it seems that you can only trade with friends. That doesn’t make much sense—one should not be limited to gifting in order to influence relationships; pressure should also play a role.

Vassals should not have access to diplomacy with other empires. Likewise, the overlord should be able to demand anything from them except their capital planet. Resistance should automatically lead to war.

Additionally, the way other species interact should be reconsidered. By default, alien races should be considered for extermination or enslavement. Only after researching a particular race should it be possible to tolerate or even integrate them. The only exception could be empathic species. Naturally, this should not result in a reputation penalty with other empires.

These are some of my long-standing wishes. Perhaps they could be implemented at some point, and the racial aspect might even make for a great mod.
