Civil War Scenario 2: The Antietam Campaign, 1862

Post by governato »

V2 October 20th 2024 by F.Governato for WEGO v1.06 and higher.

Send comments and save files to fabio.governato@gmail.com

This the second of two scenarios set in the American Civil War. It follows the Antietam camapign in its entirety! It should be a lot of fun to play.

The ACW scenarios use a set of new graphics created with help from user Hellway.
This is not a full graphic rehaul, but it will be sufficient to create a feel for the era and sense of immersion.

You can find the latest version of the scenario
HERE ( V1 8/20/2024) and the ACWMOD package HERE

Here is how to install the scenarios AND the special graphics (ACWMOD.zip).

1) make sure you upgraded your copy of WEGO Stalingrad to v1.06 or newer. This is crucial as the scenarios will not work properly with older versions. Once you have upgraded to Stalingrad v1.06

Option 1: This is a bit crude, but easy and has no risk for your main installation of "Stalingrad". You will make a copy of the Stalingrad game and change some of the graphic files in this copy.
The main installation will remain untouched. If something goes wrong or you just do not like the new graphics..delete Stalingrad.ACW and everything will be as before!

- Copy the "Stalingrad" directory in Program Files/Matrix Games/ and paste it in ...Program Files/Matrix Games/ (basically you make a copy of the folder next to the original one)

- Rename the copied folder as 'Stalingrad.ACW'

Do not copy "Stalingrad" anywhere else. Also leave the other 'Stalingrad" folder, the one in "Documents/My Games", untouched.

- cd Stalingrad.ACW

- rename "start" start.ACW (and make a new desktop shortcut (using "more options" and then "make shortcut"). This is the desktop icon you will click on to start this version of Stalingrad that will have the new graphics. If you start the game from the default desktop icon it will use the old graphics form the standard installation folder.

- download the ACWMOD.zip file onto the Desktop or wherever works for you.
- unzip it. You will now have an ACWMOD folder

to install the ACW graphic mod for Stalingrad

- cd ACWMOD
- cp Images into the "Stalingrad.ACW" folder
- cp sounds into the "Stalingrad.ACW" folder

You will get some warnings that you are going to replace some files with similar names. Say yes to it.

Now when you start the game with the start.ACW icon you will notice a few things have changed. The start page will have a different background, and when you start any of the ACW scenarios most flags and icons will be different. There are some examples in a post in the main section of WEGO:

https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/view ... 2#p5177342

Option 2) You could also see if using the JGSME for mods installations works, but I have not tried yet.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

To install the Antietam scenario you will need to put some files in Documents/MyGames/Stalingrad (do not worry as no files will be overwritten)

1) place Antietam_1862.png and Antietam_1862_thb.png in Documents/MyGames/Stalingrad/maps
2) place Antietam_1862_AI.sce and Antietam_1862_AI.sum in Documents/MyGames/Stalingrad/scn

When you start the game it will show up in the scenarios list as "the Antietam Campaign 1862 V2+AI"

You will be able to post a challenge on the forum, however your opponent will need to have the game upgraded to v1.06 and
install the ACWMOD graphics and the map as in 2) for the game to look as intended.

Good luck and have fun!

Scenario Description:
combat is bloodier than for WW2 scenarios and command ranges are short. Keep your forces concentrated and use cavalry as scouts and screening to find where the enemy is before he finds you. It will take days to recover from a major, high intensity battle and in case of defeat retreat to safe supply lines could be difficult. Keep an eye on strategic bridges as the enemy will try to block you there. Historically there were major engagements at Harper's Ferry, South Mountain and Sharpsburg, resulting in an operational victory for the Union (and successful midterm elections for Lincoln). The Confederate forces had to withdraw and regroup without achieving any long term results.

The geographical details of the land were not fully known to both sides. So historical fords are marked, but not all :).

Game notes: do not change the initial setup. The Army of the Potomac should not cross the Potomac unless in pursue of Lee's main force. It should not move South of the fortified area around DC.

Each side obtains Victory points by occupying certain locations, destroying static and moving depots and inflicting losses.

v3.1
- added fords over the Shenandoah
- decreased TOE of Union forces
- decreased quality and readiness of some Union Corps
- decreased TOE of CSA forces by 10% to reflect post Frederick troop numbers.
- added reserve artillery to CSA
- changed TOE of depots so that totals reflect only fighting troops
- Lee's forces start near Leesburg
- Union forces will receive replacements during the first 10 turns. Assign them wisely.

Should any CSA unit be able to occupy Washington DC or Baltimore at any time, that should be considered a Sudden Death Victory for the South.

Railway tracks are marked in light red, but function has dirt tracks as there were no substantial railway movements in this campaign

CSA Briefing

As commander of the Army of Virginia, your main goal is to gain control of Maryland by raiding depots and communication centers and to show that the Confederate Army cannot be defeated in battle. You have supplies for about a three weeks before your army will becomes to exhausted due to fight. Also consider that the CSA has limited reserves of manpower and you will not be able to replace your losses for future campaigns (in game terms your losses cost a lot of VPs)

To achieve your political and military goals several strategies are possible (some are more daring than others!)

Invade Maryland and

- destroy depots
- raid Maryland towns, with an eye on Washington DC and even Baltimore if the enemy turns out to be weaker than expected.
- force Harper's Ferry Garrison to surrender by cutting it off from its supply lines.
- approach the railroad connecting Baltimore and Washington DC to the rest of the Union
- Union forces likely outnumber you, but McLellan leadership is cautious and his forces slower than yours.
- force battle only if you have the better ground or numerical superiority

Union Briefing

The Army of Virginia is as big as yours (or possibly bigger!) and is invading Union soil for the first time. While its specific objectives are not known, it must be found, chased and soundly defeated before it reaches Maryland's towns and vital railroads depots. However, a Union defeat in a major battle would be a political disaster for Lincoln and his administration and could lead to France and England recognizing the Southern States independence.

- keep DC and Baltimore protected at all times
- do not cross the Potomac into Virginia
- force battle when ready and win decisevely to show England and France that the South can't win.
- your units are slower than the enemy's, but have the advantage of better lines of communications and supply.

NOTE: After a lot of modern history readings I do not fully buy the old narrative of a slow and incompetent MCClellan vs a brilliant R.E.Lee. However The Union Army is only slowly coming together and will take a few days to be in fighting shape.

OMG. This rather unexpected scenario looks and sounds amazing. Thank you, again, for your work on producing new scenarios.

Tx for the comments :)

The Civil War scenarios got the strongest feedback from testers. They really show the WEGO engine at its best as the elements of surprise and maneuver play a main role. These scenarios play very differently from the WW2 scenarios.
I will advertise them on the main matrix forum once they are released as I think they'd get attention from the wargame community at large. Again just waiting for the patch from the developers as some of the planned fixes are quite relevant.

Just a mini update to confirm that I am still developing "Antietam 1862".

- scripting the AI
- Incorporating a copule of new features from the engine updates.
- some new graphcs. It will likely not be a fully new set, but at very least the scenario won't have have German icons
running around Maryland...will see!
