Why the GOG delay?

Strategic Command: American Civil War gives you the opportunity to battle for the future of the United States in this grand strategy game. Command the Confederacy in a desperate struggle for independence, or lead the Union armies in a march on Richmond.

Why the GOG delay?

Post by DarkstarOne »

I like to buy my games thru GOG whenever possible. Was wondering why the delay in availability there for SCACW?

Both the GoG and Steam release are two weeks after the release on Matrix to encourage players to buy direct from Matrix as the developers get a greater % of the profit margin than they do via a third party such as Steam or GoG who naturally take their own cut which can be quite significant.

If you are confident about the product I would always recommend buying direct from Matrix. If you are less confident then two weeks is not a long time to wait if you want to be covered by the refund policy offered by Steam ( and GoG ?) .

Gog is my store-front of choice as well. Steam lists the game as being available on July 14th, so I'm hopeful that it'll be released on gog at that time. The rest of the Strategic Command catalog (even the legacy titles) is on gog, so I'd guess that this one will be up there as well. On the other hand, frankly, Matrix's gog support is spotty. WitW and WitE are up there, but not WitE2. Shadow Empire is there but none of the Decisive Campaigns games are. Armored Brigade is there but not WarPlan. I don't get it...

I prefer Steam but with a Matrix purchase you get a Steam key anyway so I just register it on Steam with that key once Steam makes the game available.
They have confirmed by the way that it will release on both GoG and Steam at the same time in a couple of weeks.

The dev for WarPlan actually explained this on Steam, and it probably goes for most small development teams that make niche games. He basically said, and I'm paraphrasing. that he might see 2 or 3 sales on GOG a month after release and it wasn't worth it to spend the time doing patches for that platform that could be put to better use.

I like GOG, too but I completely understand why this stance is taken. I'm not a particular Steam fan, but the update process is very easy, and I do like their forum format. I try to buy Matrix games on Matrix so the dev's get the full compensation for their work. Most games the last few years get Steam keys anyway. I just wish Matrix/Slitherine would make their update process better. For some reason I find that the update.exe file just vanishes from the game file and I have to end up doing a manual download and update.
