Flooding 1 never gets better?

Rule the Waves III is a simulation of naval ship design and construction, fleet management and naval warfare from 1890 to 1970. and will place you in the role of 'Grand Admiral' of a navy from the time when steam and iron dominated warship design up to the missile age.

Flooding 1 never gets better?

Post by thedoctorking »

I've noticed on many occasions that ships, especially small ones like DDs, will repair most of their flooding fairly quickly after getting damaged, get down to flooding 1, and then just stay there for the rest of the scenario. If the scenario is a long one, they risk slowly sinking, even though they are not afire or being shot at, just slowly filling up. Is this WAD or some creation of the damage control system (where maybe a successful damage control roll is rewarded by reducing the flooding level by 30% or something, and 30% of 1 rounds off to 0?).

It is frustrating to watch your expensive DDs slowly sinking and there isn't a damn thing you can do about it.

I thinks it's supposed to be a representation of how you can't always stop all flooding., and I've noticed that a flooding rate of 3 can sometimes not decrease. If a bulkhead gives way though...

If you find it seems to be a bit prevalent, keep a track of it for a few battles and submit a report.

Ships sometimes gain a point or two of "progressive" flooding when hit. Progressive flooding can't be reduced until all the normal flooding has stopped, and then has a very low chance of being reduced (somewhere in the ballpark of a 1/1000 chance per turn). Damage control training and a captain with the "damage control specialist" trait both seem to greatly improve the odds.

That's the answer. This is a major handicap for smaller ships. Flooding 1 for a 70k tn BB is meaningless, but for a 400 tn missile boat, it's fatal. Maybe the "progressive" flooding should be a percentage? Or was this intentional to nerf smaller ships?

It's not meaningless. As you can read in my ongoing RTW2 AAR here https://www.si-games.com/forum/showthre ... ost1314336, I only lost the battlecruiser Nisshin because of permanent flooding 1. He didn't make it back to the port.

If circumstances are unfortunate, then flooding 1 is deadly, even to large battleships

Damage control extra training is worth every penny...

What mrchuck chucked. Prioritize it in research, as well.

And, yes, sometimes that accursed 1 flooding never goes away (just like in real life). In which case it occurs to me that you may need to get out of flood speed (<10k) and book to port at highest speed to get home before the sand runs out. If possible. And hope those bulkheads hold . . .

Hmm. Von Klest? Wasn't he the heersgruppe commander whom we handed over to the Sovs, who convicted him of subversion of the Soviet People through "kindness and humanitarianism" (their words, not mine), and he died in the gulag? (At least his son got out.) Any relation?

No relation. Indeed he was handed over to Yugoslavia from Western captivity.

I have tried to find a primary quality source for the "kindness and humanism" claim, but wasn't able to yet (I didn't dig too deep).

Here is an interview with good information: https://web.archive.org/web/20200223065 ... 5141-echo/

From this interview, von Kleist was not a nazi and likely among the more humane generals from the POV of the local population. But of course complicit in a war of aggression. He probably was unlucky to have participated in the Yugoslavia invasion and therefore entered the trial and prison labyrinth from there.

He took Vlasov's entreaties to heart. I had an ESL student who was a child in Kiev during the war. She commented "German soldiers give candy." They having been under orders to treat civilians under HGA and HGB (relatively) well. (AGC, not so much.)

On the subject of flooding, I have lost one or two cap ships to 1-point flooding. But not often. I am a relatively aggressive player, but give me damage control over gunnery every time.

well, even if you cant entirely stop some flooding, every ship have working pumps (unless they are disabled by damage) to pump out water to prevent sinking.
yet, in game if you have any flooding, then ship will surely sink, soner or later.

Yep, and that was happening to Bismarck after her encounter with Hood and PoW. Just 2 hits - but even after temporary repairs, the flooding was faster than the pumps could handle, resulting in the loss of part of the machinery spaces. In this case, Bismarck had the speed and endurance to reach Brest before the flooding reached too high a value - at least until the Stringbags and Applecores torpedoed the ship, slowing her enough for KGV and Rodney to catch and reduce Bismarck to a sinking state.
