Explain Effect of Mobility?

Post by elxaime »

A question for someone here:

What does mobility do? It is very expensive to give to units. And I assumed in a theatre where there is mainly jungle fighting and amphibious landings, having mobile units isn't helpful.

Then I thought - does it allow you to make more than one amphibious attack per unit per turn? Or multiple attacks generally? That would be useful - more useful than simply being able to move farther.

Can someone explain mobility? Does it affect more than just movement, e.g. enable multiple combats?

It gives 1 more action point or so; some form of motorization (adding trucks and all) to a ground unit.

you are generally right in your conclusion. It's expensive, maybe even too expensive though hard to balance this as it shouldn't be too cheap to spam either. You can only give it to land units, and it basically means motorizing the transport (as the animations will show if you turn those one). It is really helpful in many situations, but it costs probably too much.

for example, a corps with lvl 1 mobility costs 180 or something, but it only has 1 attack. for 250, you can make a mechanized corps, which has 2 attacks, but the same movement points as a corps with lvl 1 mobility (both 5). So if you don't already have this tech researched, it's probably not useful to wait for it to be finished and then upgrade your units.

only warfare techs enable multiple combats afaik, it is armored warfare for armored units (tanks & mechanized infantry) and aerial warfare for fighters and strategic bombers.

The research is expensive too. Japan does get a small break on the cost rise. 20% for the Allies,15% for Japan. Mobility is costly, but so is a sitzkrieg. At times in some parts of Asia between the mud and terrain you can barely move off road without those few extra APs.

idk about WitP since I haven't played it yet but in WaW yeah, the mud is quite brutal. But at least in WaW I feel like you're probably better off taking the mechanized, right? Gives 2 attacks, and also China generally doesn't have any anti-armor, so the mechanized will be more resilient to counter attacks than a corps with mobility. But maybe because the map is bigger in WitP, you might need mobility in more places than you can train mech infantry for, so in that case it might be an interesting strategic dillema.

Mech is nice but build limits and starting technology in the game inhibit what you can do. Japan can only build only two tanks and one mechanized unit. They start with some one-strike light tank units but since the armored warfare tech is un-researched for everybody at start, all units only get one strike. China gets no ability to build mechanized units, or tanks although it can receive a one light and regular tank unit through decision events. So, by the endgame you need to mobilize some Chinese infantry in order to "squeeze" through gaps in the enemy line. Even the British only get one tank build and it takes them some time to afford it.

Obviously, tanks and mech builds are a lot more generous for the Soviets and US. Mechanized mobility does come in handy for Manchuria, re-conquering the Philippines or in Japan itself.
