A message ticks in at CiCPac HQ.

From: Base commander, Mannargudi, India
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: Invasion!

It is my duty to inform you that a Japanese invasion of India is under way. At my command are 4 police officers, 10 volunteers armed with hunting rifles and shotgun, and a police car. Today some 15.000 Japanese soldiers waded ashore. I have no hope of holding this position unless heavily reinforced today. You might also pay attention to the fact that this city holds a railroad station, and this might in fact be a benefit for Japan only, as I do not see any forces available in India capable of defending against this invasion.
Expect the town to fall tomorrow, priorities should be placed on bringing land based units to India! Also suggest alerting PM Churchill about this dangerous event.
Expect all available bombers to commence bombing runs against enemy shipping despite being outnumbered in the air!

CiCPac Terje439 sits staring at a telegram pondering what responses are available to him...

From: Base commander, Mannargudi, India
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: lost...

The Japanese assault was launched today, with no forces at my disposal, I had no chance of holding back the 25.000 Japanese troops. JAPAN NOW HOLDS A BASE IN INDIA!!!

In an attempt to be able to do anything at all, CiCPac Terje439 once more contemplates sending in all available transports, bulk freighters and tankers in an attempt to retake the Hawaiian Islands. He knows that losses will be high indeed, but control over the Hawaiian Islands is a must if Pearl Harbour is to remain a useful base for the Allies.
At the same time PM Churchill has announced that no ground forces will be available for the defence of India for another month. This means that the situation is grim indeed.
One message is sent out from CiCPac HQ this day.

From: CiCPac HQ
To: Pres. Roosevelt, PM Churchill
Subj: Situation in the Pacific and possible actions.

India: Without atleast four more INF DIVs there is not much that can be done to stop any Japanese attack. If the Japanese Empire decides to attack India in force, as many units as possible will assemble in Karachi to defend that city. Any ship currently in port will then be considered worthy of sacrifice to deny the Japanese invasion that is likely to be attempted in an attack at Karachi.

Central Pacific: Pearl Harbour is per today not usable as a base for ships and planes. To retake the bases surrounding Pearl Harbour, we would need atleast 4 fleet carriers, these will not be able for atleast six months. Another possibility would be to load up all available units based on the US West Coast on transports. For such a plan we would use ALL available transports, this would mean that the units transported would be scattered on several ships each. This is done to make sure that most of the troops will be alive to fight at the beach. We can muster some 150 ships for such an operation, estimated losses are 50 transports, or 1/3 of all available freighters on the West Coast. Chances of taking the first base is estimated at 75% if our reports are correct.

Australia/New Zealand/Port Moresby: This sector is quiet. The Japanese are seizing unguarded bases with small forces, while we are building up our bases in Australia, Noumea and Port Moresby. As of today the Japanese would have to dig up any available unit in the South-Pacific to be able to take Port Moresby. This area is not considered in Jeopardy.

China: Messages from Chiang Kai-Shek indicate that the Chinese are taking a beating on all fronts. He does however seem confident that several reinforcements will arrive within two weeks, and this will ensure that Japan can not withdraw all their forces from the Chinese mainland.

Today some 20.000 Japanese troops landed at the base, and I regret to say that we were unable to hold our position. The base is now in Japanese hands...

You are still holding Manila and Soerabaja which is good. In India, the situation can get from bad to worse if you allow him to cut off your troops up north from Calcutta east. I would consider withdrawing towards Karachi. Karachi is an urban hex, you get lots of supply each turn and if you have forts up to 9 then you can hold for a long time, if not forever.

Good luck.

Well, Manilla will fall shortly. As of todays turn, the base holds some 1100 supply points. Soerebaja on the other hand will hold a tad longer as the base holds over 20k supplies. Manilla also only has a level 2 fort. I am expecting a deliberate attack at Manilla soon, I also expect Roy to keep bombarding Soerebaja for quite some time. But that is good, if I can keep all those Japanese troops tied up at Soerebaja, then they cannot be used elsewere.
I do however miss my CVs alot...

Subj: Enemy aproaching

Today two enemy infantry units were spotted moving towards the city. As of now it is unknown how big these units are, but I expect to face some 20.000 Japanese troops. If my expectations are correct, I will have no choice but to withdraw from the city tomorrow, as my base force is too small to hold against such forces. REQUEST IMMEDIATE REINFORCEMENTS!!

February 18th 1942

A rather busy day at CiCPac HQ, some messages comes in, but the events heat up as the day goes by.

From: Base commander, Madras
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: Overrun!

Strong enemy attacks forced me to withdraw my forces towards the north. Will embark on trains and head for Karachi.

From: Agent I-1
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: Kido Butai

Have spotted Kido Butai off Tivandrum!!

From: Base commander, Pearl Harbour
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: Enemy bombers

We have finally managed to figure out what base holds bombers and what base holds fighters only. Enemy land based bombers are based at Lahaina. Suggest this information be used in planning an attack.

With the last message, CiCPac Terje439 makes a decision.

From: CiCPac HQ
To: Base commander, Los Angeles
Subj: Offensive

New Intel places enemy bombers in the Hawaiian Islands at Lahaina. 4 task forces are to be assembled.
TF-1: 90 transport ships. These ships will load a strong invasion force, no supplies are to be loaded!
TF-2: 10 transport ships. These ships will load only supplies.
TF-3: 15 tankers. These ships will load fuel and act as a replenishment task force to support TF-4.
TF-4: 2 battleships, 5 heavy cruisers, 6 light cruisers, 12 destroyers. These ships will form a bombard mission, and will only engage after the initial landing has been made. After bombarding enemy positions they will hunt for the enemy task force consisting of minesweepers operating in the Hawaiian islands.

Expect heavy losses to TF-1. Heavy damaged ships are to head for Pearl Harbour. Acceptable losses are 20 ships.

February 19th 1942

this is a quiet day at CiCPac HQ, at 1200 hours (US West Coast time zone), a disturbing report comes in leaving everyone in deep thoughts.

From: Base commander, Manilla
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: Supplies

Today our supplies ran out. All food and ammunition depleted, all mules eaten. Urgently need a supply convoy. Men are reported to have actually eaten their belts. Have no belief in holding for long without fresh supplies.
The following are badly needed;
-food
-ammunition
-belts (belt buckles not needed)
-mules
-medicines
The following would be apreciated;
-sigarettes
-alcohol
-toiletpaper.
But speed will be of the essence. Morale is dvindling fast, and several of the locals have been overheard talking of desertion...

Situation tenses up for a moment at CiCPac HQ when word reaches them that one of the major bases is under a deliberate Japanese attack. When it is realised that the target is Soerebaja and not Manilla, cheers erupt from everyone present.

From: Base commander, Soerebaja
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: under attack

Today the Japanese launched a deliberate attack on our positions. Losses to the enemy is estimated at 3500 dead, our casualties were 503 men.

February 21st 1942

The day starts out ok at CiCPac HQ as the first message of the day ticks in, the latter two however...

From: Base commander, San Fransisco
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: task forces

All task forces have been assembled and have finished loading. All ships are now on their way towards Lahaina.

This message causes some happiness amongst the staff of CiCPac HQ, finally the allied offensive will start. It is soon proved that the temporary cheerfullness of the staff is about to vanish...

From: Base commander, Pearl Harbour
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: enemy spotted

Today our Catalinas spotted a Japanese task force of 10 ships. These ships are reported as 2 fleet carriers escorted by 8 heavy cruisers. Their destination seems to be somewere around Lahaina. No bombers available at Pearl Harbour to launch an attack on the enemy fleet.

From: Base commander, Broome, Australia
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: enemy spotted

Today we spotted a task force, reported to consist of 10 troop carriers. Their destination seems to be Broome. If so, there is little hope of holding the enemy forces that is bound to leap ashore. Aerial attacks were launched, and several Japanese ships were lost, however the enemy fleet seems to still be advancing. Reinforcements needed for all of Northern Australia.

Late in the evening, CiCPac Terje439 is seen sitting in his office staring at the maps of the Pacific, as if he is trying to conjure up fresh troops to throw into the defence. There are too many places to hold, and far too few units to hold them, and as if that was not enough, he has to fight with different governments to be allowed to move those units that actually are present around...

February 22nd 1942

Three messages ticks in at CiCPac HQ, while one of them was expected, one of the other causes some joy and the last one causes fear...

From: Base commander, Broome
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: Invasion

Enemy forces are invading, no hope of holding unless aided within 24 hours!

From: Base commander, Broome
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: Thanks!

Dutch PT boat showed up, sank enemy MSW and forced enemy invasion fleet to flee. Only 4000 enemy troops landed. Hope of holding unless they are allowed to reinforce. Request all available aerial units to aid with in keeping enemy fleet offshore.

From: Base commander, Pearl Harbour
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: enemy carrier fleet

Be warned that the enemy carrier fleet has passed the Hawaiian Islands, and are on a course NE from Hawaii. Danger of running into assembled fleets designated for invasion of Lahaina.

At the end of the day, CiCPac Terje439 gives the only order he can give given the circumstances.

From: CiCPac HQ
To: Sub fleet, TF-1, TF-2, TF-3, TF-4
Subj: enemy carrier fleet

TF-1, TF-2, TF-3, TF-4 will withdraw closer to San Fransisco, within aerial cover of landbased aircrafts. All Submarines within range (22) are to take up a blocking position between Pearl Harbour and San Fransisco.

February 23rd 1942

Tension is high at the beginning of the day. Were is the Japanese carrier force headed? As messages starts ticking in at CiCPac HQ a picture starts to form...

From: Base commander, Broome
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: Invasion

Enemy invasion fleet is back as the Dutch PT-boat had to head back for resupply. Expect more troops to land during the night. Enemy tanks allready ashore. Expect to have to withdraw soon.

From: Base commander, Pearl Harbour
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: Enemy carrier fleet

Enemy carrier fleet seems to have taken up blocking position between US mainland and Pearl Harbour. Enemy fleet now also reported to contain 2 battleships and 4 heavy cruisers.

From: Base commander, Pearl Harbour
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: invasion force spotted

Our Catalinas have reported an enemy task force consisting of troop carriers as well as a battleship, some destroyers and a heavy cruiser. Expect this to be an invasion force bound for Pearl Harbour./i]

Finally it seems the allies have some idea as to what is about to happen. Only downside is that they do not have adequate forces to do anything about it. Those 3 USN carriers that were lost early on would have made a huge difference by now. As the situation stands, CiCPac Terje439 sends out the only message he can for the day.

From: CiCPac HQ
To: US Sub fleet
Subj: prepare for battle!

If the enemy carrier fleet remains stationary, all subs are to take up positions at the enmys position as well as any possible escape route. Primary targets are enemy carriers. If these are taken out of action our two remaining carriers will go out of port and seek battle. Happy hunting!

February 24th 1942

Three messages enter CiCPac HQ and two messages are sent out.

From: Captain, USN submarine Haddock
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: Enemy carrier fleet

Made contact with enemy carrier fleet, launched two torpedoes on enemy destroyer Namikaze. Both torpedoes hit the enemy vessel, but both also failed to detonate. Will continue to shadow enemy carrier fleet. Enemy fleet has altered course, and is now heading towards Dutch Harbour.

From: Base Commander, Broome
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: enemy invasion

Today even more Japanese soldiers landed outside the city. Expect the city to fall tomorrow.

From: Base Commander, Manilla
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: enemy attacks

The last two days the Japanese have launched deliberate attacks. If this keeps up, we will not be able to hold more than 14 days at the most. All defences are destroyed. Send supplies immediately!

From: CiCPac HQ
To: US Sub Fleet
Subj: Enemy carrier fleet

USS Haddock will lead all subs on towards the enemy carrier fleet. If any oppertunities arise, take it!

From: CiCPac HQ
To: TF-1, TF-2, TF-3, TF-4
Subj: Invasion

With the enemy carrier fleet heading towards Dutch Harbour, all invasion forces will head out to sea, and take up a temporary position SW off San Fransisco, about half way between US West Coast and Hawaiian Islands. Wait for further instructions before venturing further, as we need to make sure the enemy carrier fleet is too far away to be able to interfere in the battle.

Two messages enter CiCPac HQ, of which, one is very disturbing.

From: Base Commander, Broome
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: Dutch PT boat

We are grateful for the effort put up by the Dutch, sadly enough the Japanese got the jump on them, and we could only watch as the Japanese invasion fleet blew the tiny Dutch vessel off the surface of the sea...

From: Base Commander, Pearl Harbour
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: Enemy carrier fleet

A few messages enters CiCPac HQ, unfortunately none of them are good news...

From: Base commander, Pearl Harbour
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: enemy carrier fleet

Still unable to locate the enemy carrier fleet.

From: Base commander, Pearl Harbour
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: enemy shipping

The enemy are gathering alot of transports in the bases around Pearl Harbour. Fear that an invasion might be imminent. If so, this suggests that the enemy carrier fleet is located somewere to the north to be able to interfere with any task force coming to our support.

From: Base commander, Manilla
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: enemy attacks

The enemy is stepping up his attacks. We still inflict casualties in a ratio of 3:1, but cannot hold for too long now.

From: Base commander, Bangalore
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: base lost

Strong enemy attacks in the morning forced the garrison to leave the city which is now in Japanese hands. We will withdraw to Karachi.

A quiet day. Only a few messages worth looking at.

From: Base commander, Derby
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: Beaufort IX performance

These beauties have been taking their toll on the Japanese invasion fleet at Broome. Give me 200 more and I'll keep northern Australia clean of Japanese shipping!

From: Base commander, Pearl Harbour
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: enemy carrier fleet

Still no sighting!

From: CiCPac HQ
To: TF-1, TF-2, TF-3, TF-4
Subj: Radio silence!

We have reason to believe that the Japanese empire will have picked up your location from your chatter. From now on you will NOT use your radios! All ships will move to sector 125,63 immediately and await further orders. Commanders are given permission to bait for sharks with any sailor using any radio device!

Newspaper headline;

Manilla FALLS!!
Our sources report that the garrison at Manilla finally had to surrender to the Japanese after a hard fought day. 112000 troops are reported to have been taken prisoner. The brave men at Manilla had been under siege for most of the war before eventually surrendering, and supplies had been low for a long time.
It makes you wonder if the people at CiCPac HQ holds any regards for the troops under their command, why was no relief force sent out to the Philliphines? The only reply we could get was that our forces lacked air cover. Yet how many fighters are not seen patrolling the skies over the US West Coast?
Is it time for some more devouted military leaders?

March 1st 1942

A slow day that still is counted as a minor allied victory at CiCPac HQ.

From: Base commander, Derby
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: Performance of Beaufort IXs

Still more Japanese shipping sunk by these highly able planes today. The enemy invasion force that landed forces at Broome took heavy damage today as they departed Australian waters.

From: Research department, foreign weaponry department
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: Zero-fighter

We were surprised today when we discovered that the Zero-fighter does not have armour plating. This means that shooting at the pilot is a good way to down a Zero. Hope this knowledge can be put to good use!

A message arrives at CiCPac HQ from Pres. Roosevelt.

From: Pres. Roosevelt
To: CiCPac HQ
Subj: Inactivity

We were led to believe that your office would soon launch an invasion of the Hawaiian Islands, yet nothing seems to happen. We take it this will soon change!?

From: CiCPac HQ
To: Pres. Roosevelt
Subj: Inactivity

We still hope to liberate the Hawaiian Islands quite soon, we cannot however send our fleets into an area were the Kido Butai has been spotted not long ago. As soon as we spot, or intercept a radio message from the enemy carriers we will launch the invasion.
