With the allies, CV power is used for covering invasions mostly. Which is important because they need to fend off mountains of betties and kates and vals which are all LBA.

I've just made invasions harder for Raver - so hard he probably will have to wait for the over-powered allied game ending fighter plane that shall not be mentioned. Raver isn't very patient though.

I've wasted no betties or pilots on any non naval targets all game. My pilots are still elite (thank god!) and my LBA is now the equal of my navy (they've had nothing to do but train). Nates becoming Tony's and Oscars. See a nate in this AAR? You don't because they've been in training for 2 years. Makes for good pilots.

When the shit hits the fan, I'm willing to back my LBA power against his reduced CV airpower. it'll cost me, but I'll beat back his invasion (transports or CVs - don't mind which I hit) with my LBA.

I'm not willing to back my surface fleet (now I've lost Kongo!) against the sort of battlewagon lineup I saw at Wake. Breathed a big sigh of relief when Yamato escaped (and then escaped his CVs again). I've been hoarding my battlewagons at Singapore, Rangoon and Tavoy - since against the older brit BBs I have a much better chance. I have several BBs undergoing refits, and now Yamato is laid up, leaving me with just 2 BBs, a handful of CAs and about 20 DDs for pacific operations. I've got some nice fleet units in the SRA to watch Oz, but I'm talking about contesting Wake, Rabaul, Solomons etc. I just don't have the firepower to match him at this point.

oh..the humanity....Dave, how could you allow this? Looks like you did a six foot header after slipping on a bananna peel!

Oh well, but at least even with the lose of the CVs I'm still in the game. I'm a hard man to keep down.

Wow.

My new mantra, which I will chant for 10 minutes before each turn of my PBEM game: I will wait for Corsairs. I will wait for Corsairs. I will wait for Corsairs. I will wait for Corsairs.

Which is highly unrealistic. The American public back then would have never waited for eoighteen months to do anything. You fight wars with both TO&E and public opinion. But the game cannot model that.

Eighteen months? Closer to three years, if you think historically. The USN didn't start flying Corsairs from carriers until 1944. My advice is to go when you have Hellcats.

Congratulations to Luskan for pulling off a remarkable reversal and keeping control of the CV balance long after the tide had turned in the actual event. I notice that he had to join Raver in Creative Intelligence/Baldface Lying to do it, though. Guys, these AAR's are a lot more useful to the larger audience if you report accurately.

Luskan is fighting this war exactly right. Too many Japanese players give up on the carrier combat in 1943 yet the Japanese have a huge qualitative advantage with A6M3a and A6M5 while the USN still flies F4F-4. Im at 8/43 in my PBEM and am finally just converting my fighters to Hellcats.

Definitely... I'm letting the jarheads fly the Corsairs from land bases, while my carriers are still waiting for their Hellcats.

Raver has been winning the baldface lying war so far this game. E.g. Fortress Java.

This time I simply neglected to report I spotted him coming towards Wake 2 turns before I did, talked about Kendari a LOT (as though I was completely focused on it) and maybe exagerrate how out of position I was.

I would have liked 5 BBs and ALL my CVs on hand to hit Raver, but I didn't so I wasn't ready for him either!

besides, this forum is too good a tool for misinformation back and forth between Raver and I to pass up. he uses it, so do I.

Less than truthful, Luskan. Your exact words were:

Blood in the water. Raver has caught me so far out of position it isn't funny. He know me too well.

First off the diversion at Kendari - perfectly timed. My CV's slipped out of their base at flank speed, hoping to catch an allied CV in the contested waters north of Oz.

Yeah Luskan has been on the inside track for most of our naval battles (and also a few of our air battles....the air battle for Rangoon was one that Luskan won). But the price for him has also been rather high and I think that he would be the first at admit, that the cost in DDs has been painfull.

Although I am a strong believer in NOT using the USN carriers till late '42 early '43 I do not think that the allied player can afford to wait till all of the fighters convert to either Corsairs or Hellcats.....using THAT tactic you give control of the seas to the IJN player. You have carriers for a reason and that is to carry the fight to the enemy.

The DDs has hurt - you only need to compare the sunk ship list with the OOB to see how bad.
In truth I mis-used them. I also had a real problem with subs. Poor deployment and very poor planning cost me all of them early.

Very nice move Luskan!

But now, as you pointed out, his CVs and BBs are supposed to be in support for landings - have you/do you try to look after the landing party probably a day or three behind the combat TFs??? Might be on a hurry back under LBA cover from Midway though...

Who cares if Luskan lied or not? Raverdave has and it's not like it's not allowed to lie on a public AAR. It's part of the psy war, and it's part of the fun.

Truth and Consequences

Who cares if Luskan lied or not? Raverdave has and it's not like it's not allowed to lie on a public AAR.

Actually, I've already partly addressed that question, but here goes for a more detailed explanation: These are, as you pointed out, public AAR's. You can't claim that "he lies, so I can lie", because many of the readers are not liars. Even more important, these forums are here for a reason. Granted, they're fun, but they also perform a valuable service to the wargaming community by offering tips on gameplay, showing why history was or was not what could be expected, and detecting bugs. This last is a very subtle but important function. Example: when Gary Grigsby's "North Atlantic '86" came out, it seemed to me that NATO fighters where not firing missiles at the rate they should. I called SSI on it, and they told me the numbers were right. Some time later when I managed to read the source code, I found that missile launches were good if only one aircraft type at a base had missiles, but if there were a mix such as Eagles and Tomcats, the missile expenditure counter got messed up.

To sum up, psychological warfare is best carried on through e-mail. Accurate reporting makes a public forum much more valuable.
